I just can't get over the fact that that's their defensive response. :) They're not even coiling up to strike, like my tetra does, for example. They're just curling up and won't move even if you poke them. You have to pick them up before they'll give up the act. :)

They fed yesterday and they are a massive species. Somebody here had pictures of an infernalis together with a terrestris the difference is really noticable.

Stefan, those are beautiful snakes! Does that picture show their true colouring? I've always thought they were on the brownish side, but here they look grey and silvery. I LOVE it!

Stefan-A

Depends on the lighting. :) As soon as it's bit warmer outside, I'm going to take a few photos in proper sunlight.

this reminds me of a postcard I saw a long time ago that had a picture of the Earth with the North America in the center, and the line was (with arrows) "Russians, being devious, hide their country behind the earth's curvature, while Americans keep their's right out in the open on the flat part"
so, I guess that would have you sort of dangling off the edge, James

I think there's a section on defensive/escape behaviour. I'll find it in the morning.
Yeah, I read that one. I think it mostly talked about how often different species use different methods (strikes vs. escapes), how they flee (straight line vs. frequently stopping or changing direction) and how it varies according to the pattern the snakes have. Don't remember much about what it said about T. elegans.

I don't know, I'm tired and my memory isn't 100% right now.

Outdoor photos, sort of. Unedited, beyond cropping and resizing.. The seemed a tiny bit darker in real life, though.

I didn't have the guts to take them out, there are a thousand places they could go in a blink of an eye.

http://koti.mbnet.fi/thamnoph/photos/snakesies08/vagrans24042008outdoor2e.jpg
Edited, closer to what I saw. Can't compensate for different monitor settings, though.

They do look a little more silvery than I'd always thought compared to the earlier pictures you'd put up. Have they changed their colour as they've grown?
I really find myself taken by these snakes all of a sudden.........very handsome critters!

Stefan-A
04-24-2008, 03:28 PM
They've changed colours several times. The photos Daniel posted had them looking beige. Like Gijs and Sabine's babies.

When I got them they were very dark brown, but the smaller one was a little darker than the bigger one. The bigger one had a well-defined dorsal stripe and the smaller one didn't.

As they grew, they practically switched. The smaller one has become lighter and has a much more well-defined stripe. The bigger one has become darker and the stripe is no longer as well defined as it was. The difference is easily seen in the pictures where I've shot them from above.

Now, you're probably thinking that I'm getting the two mixed up and that they haven't really changed, but it's pretty hard to do. It's so easy to tell the two apart, because the smaller one has a couple of fused supralabial scales, which you can see in several of my pictures.

But back to the coloration.. They were brown when I got them, but they started becoming grey a few months ago. The bigger one is slightly more brown than the smaller one.

anji1971
04-24-2008, 03:33 PM
So basically they are more silvery- grey than they used to be......:D

Stefan-A
04-24-2008, 03:36 PM
Yes, that would be correct. :D But not quite silvery grey. ;)

So, the impossible has just happened; They both refused to eat and neither is about to shed. I suspect it has been getting a bit too warm in there these last couple of days.

Nothing wrong with the tetra's appetite, she just took her first 2 week old mouse.

not unusual...have had mine do that occasionally.

Stefan-A
05-02-2008, 12:35 PM
No, but they both went off feed at the same time, didn't think much of it. I'm sure that she's eaten after that appeared in the photos.

They've had paper towel substrate for the past two months or so, I don't believe it's because of substrate getting stuck. Broken tooth maybe, I think she hit the tweezers some time ago.

edit: I posted a picture of them on the 24th, I can see it in that photo.

Is it the same snake that has the fused scales? It could just be a minor deformity. Hitting the tweezers could damage teeth of course, but surely that would have healed by now. If there's no sign of 'mouth-rot' I wouldn't worry, Stefan.

No, it's the other one and it's a new thing. Definitely didn't look like this a month ago.

I sort of took this as a sign of mouth rot. I tried gently to get it to open its mouth, but it wouldn't cooperate.

adamanteus
05-03-2008, 01:54 AM
If it was mouth rot, you'd see it pretty quickly....inflamed gums, minor bleeding, fasting.

Stefan-A
05-03-2008, 02:37 AM
I don't see any gums, haven't even seen it yawn. Can't see any bleeding but it is fasting, although I have been taking that as a seasonal thing since they both started and as the temperature is higher than usual.

Stefan-A
05-04-2008, 08:24 AM
Okay, they're not fasting anymore. :D

Managed to have a look inside the mouth of the one with the messed up jaw, while it was eating. The inside of the mouth is a healthy pink with no discoloration. No wounds.

Stefan-A

That one has exactly the coloration I was hoping for. I was actually a little disappointed at first, before they started turning grey. The other one is a little more brown as you might see in this photo, for example:

Awesome! 70 % thats about...uhm...150 grams! That makes her...372 grams??? Thats a big girl then! Do you thinks she's gravid?

Stefan-A

Awesome! 70 % thats about...uhm...150 grams!
No, that's 90 grams. :D 132 grams when she went into hibernation, 222 grams now.
Note, my math sucks, but I think I'm right this time.

I don't know if she's gravid, I hope that she is, but I haven't seen anything conclusive signs that she would be.

I am an engineer, but I was never good at math. :) Maybe I'm above average now, thanks to several repeated math courses. ;)

Isn't that a scary thought, though? An engineer with bad math skills. :D

Stefan-A

I don't have any reason to assume that she is. If she is, she's definitely hiding it well. I'm not convinced that the weight increase is drastic enough to be taken as any kind of sign.

Not that fast. The bigger one has grown 4.5 cm in over two months, the smaller one just 1.5 cm. Although you can't trust Snakemeasurer to be that accurate, it's still a huge difference.

I meant the difference in growth rates. :) But I wouldn't dare put the male anywhere near them. :D Not for at least a year or two and no longer than necessary, if the size difference between males and females is as significant in vagrans as it is in T. sirtalis parietalis.

100€ for the tetrataenia and 45€ each for the vagrans. I know some members here sell both a lot cheaper, but I didn't see anybody else here with vagrans babies for sale last year and I wasn't planning to get a tetra, but I decided to seize the opportunity when the owner wanted to sell it.

Correct, and now that I just re-read it I see it had nothing to do with kitty and everything to do with not having your snakes yet.

My bad...

When I first found that totally weird cat dancing (Google image search "Happy Dance") Someone had mentioned "Happy Dance" so I put him up there.

So far it has made at least a couple people smile:D

I'd have rather found a dancing snake.......

Still have not found one, guess one day I need to just create one from scratch.

Natrix maura. It is roughly the equivalent of North American water snakes, only smaller and a lot less feisty. Like your water snakes, this little water snake also mimics venomous snakes. Nerodias mimic Agkistrodon, if I remember correctly, and Natrix maura mimics Vipera.

So they are the natrix! I was confused by the talk of the vagrans in the midst of all that, and I was wondering why they looked so unusual for garters.
Guess you managed to work out all the bugs in getting them. Good to hear!

Yeah, for a few days in August, there was a bit of a panic.

At least one of the Natrix as well as the vagrans have eaten so far. I was "warned" that most of the N. maura in this clutch were eating dead food.

Stefan-A

Well, they've all eaten at least once now, so that's a relief. :)

Cool. Those Natrix are handsome, one day...

But they're so damn tiny. :D It's going to be a little tricky to get enough calcium into them.

Meaning that it has to be added.

Those Natrix are really cool looking, Stefan. Dont get to see them over here.

Nothing wrong with that, now that I switched all but the fussiest of the babies to "sushi" I sprinkle calcium powder on the fish about every other feeding.

The deaths scared me enough that I will not buy feeder fish from stores anymore, so far all the babies but 4 will eat Tilapia and Salmon just fine.

We netted a bunch of minnows from that pristine creek out back, Impressive in as much as there has never been a dead fish floating in the tank yet. (store bought feeders I'd have to skim off dead ones every day!)

Due to local legislation, the fish have to be dead, or I can't use them. I just need fish that are small enough and there aren't any like that in the wild this time of year.

Can't buy feeders either. No market for them.

Well, where's the fun in that? :p

Stefan, what were they eating before you got them?

Stefan-A

Guppies and salmon/trout. Most of the snakes had been converted to eat dead fish a week or so before.

That's not so bad then. A little dusting... you could roll very thin slices of fillet around the vit powder, but probably not necessary :)

Stefan-A

The problem should be solved, I went out and got some of that good old TerraVit Fluid. It's multivitamin + calcium lactate, you can put it in the water or directly on the food.

Funny enough, the Natrix maura are supposed to be water snakes, but I've only seen one of them swim (once). The male vagrans on the other hand spends a lot of time in the water dish. I have to get him a bigger one.

I got the guy/gal below to hiss at me a couple of times while I was cleaning the enclosure. :D Coming from such a tiny snake, it sounded like a protracted sniff rather than a proper hiss. And considering its size, it must have been putting everything it had into that hiss.

Damn that is so cool, none of my snakes hiss.....

Oddly Stefan my Nerodia spends less time in the water than most of my Garters. and they are called water snakes also??

Stefan-A

It is cool. :D I've never heard a garter make any kind of noise. Neither hissing nor rattling. ;)

Cool post count :)

I don't know if the same holds true for your water babies, and I know you can't feed live, but my garter babies never went in their dish until this week. They would take a drink, but actually seemed to avoid getting wet. My husband even commented about how the babies really didn't like the water. I gave them live fish this week and now they constantly lounge in and on the dish waiting for fish to appear :) Before this week they've only had pre-killed food items. It made me wonder if most of the garters who spend time in the water have been conditioned to do so?

Stefan-A

We'll have to ask Gijs & Sabine about that. It's their vagrans. :) None of my other garter snakes have been fed live fish, at least not in my care, and none of them are very interested in using the water dish for anything other than drinking.

I think they're both getting ready for brumation. I already arranged my snakes according to species, in case I decide to give these two a fake brumation. These two have their own enclosure now and the tetrataenia shares one with the parietalis.

That same damn maura hissed at me,musked me and did several mock strikes when I cleaned their enclosure a few minutes ago. :D It was really upset.

Yeah, the viperine snakes are so much fun with their little protests. :D

The new vagrans is still pretty skittish, though. He hasn't been aggressive in any way (yet), but doesn't curl up like the females do, either. Definitely a runner.
