Well, as I've already shared with all of you, I released my Butler's garter yesterday. Before we left, I had told the kids that we would round up a pile of Easterns and pick our favourite to take home as a replacement. I figured it would ease the loss somewhat.
What we weren't counting on was some development near the area, with a great deal of changes in only a few weeks. There is a lot of machinery working very close to the area, and the leftover soil from construction is all being dumped within a short distance of the pond.
Needless to say, there were no snakes to be found in that location. They must have all been forced to move farther into the nature area.
So after the release, we were all trudging along, snakeless. And I was beginning to feel depressed and question my decision to let the Butler's go at all. My daughter was getting ready to cry, and it was generally a very crappy situation.
But someone was looking out for us, and when we started walking along one of the back trails, I stepped into a grassy spot near a tree, and 2 or 3 snakes burst out in all directions! So I grabbed the first one I could get, and it turned out to be a nice big female, with a lot of red on the sides. She didn't try to bite, and she was fairly calm in my hands after just a few seconds. Her colouring is different than most of the others I've seen lately -- she's more olive and taupe with these rich red side stripes.
So you can guess where she is now!!
Yup, Deejay's gonna have a 'big sister'!

She's pretty dirty right now, but I can' wait till she sheds once to see those colours come out. I'll post more pics after she's settled in a bit.

Thanks, guys!
She is big! She's noticeably larger than Deejay, and I really hope she's been..ahem.....busy, out there before I came along. I'd love to have some babies to raise.
Only problem I can see so far is one eye looks damaged, as if something tried to get her, and smooshed that side of her head a bit. Not sure if she's blind in that eye or not, but it's definitely not 100%. It doesn't take away from her looks at all, though!

And, no, Justin, you can't have her!! I draw the line at jam for Christmas!

Lori, with all the horses, goats, turkeys, emus, donkeys, dogs, and whatnot running around your place, can you blame the poor snakes for not sticking around anywhere near??:D

Awww, Chili-- love it!!

Yeah, I suspect there are too many critters at the house for the snakes to come too close... well, no, because we've always had black rat snakes, even had one come in the house thru the doggy door one day and we found him lounging across the kitchen counter. LOL And they usually are eating the chicken eggs by now. But haven't even seen them yet... maybe it's a bit early. I am in a bit of a rush for summer!!!!

Some pics!!
Last night I gave her a bath, and for quite a while afterwards, she just snuggled up on my lap wrapped in a towel. Then she wandered around in my hands for a bit, so I had a great opportunity to snap a few nice shots.

nice photos
it looks like some of the scales around the eye are also damaged
isn't it amazing, how resilient they are?
she's beautiful and I have a snake by that name also (not a garter)

That looks like the same type of snakes I catch. I put a photo on this site and someone id'd it as an Eastern garter, variant "Flame".

anji1971

She's not a flame -- they have WAY more red, and are not found in my area. But she does have a lot of red colouring. I remember the picture of yours, and they are similar. Easterns are neat that way........so many different colour combinations!

Good news!!!
Chili is going into shed, so I'll be able to see what her nice colours really look like!!
When she does, I'll take pics and start Chili a photo thread of her own.:)
