I now officially have 5 snakes instead of one:D

First arrived two young parietalises, brother and sister, very nice colouring. I hope the brother will start to fancy my old female after a year (or two? what is the 'ripe' age again?). They're now about 4 months old.

Next was a beautiful young Natrix Maura, which I might even like more than the parietalises  because it somehow fits better in its surroundings, and has more subtle coulour patterns. This one EATS a hell of a lot, it now looks like a gabon adder :).

And now I found back my long lost corn snake who ate today(luckily).

Pictures soon:)

P.S. Are any of you (dutch people) experiencing a frog wave? There are about 50 frogs and billions of eggs in my tiny pond...yuck.
My snake is too small to eat all of them:), and they just keep coming back.

congrats to your new addition
one or both of your babies might like the frog eggs

I think that he'll be doing illegal things if he feeds the frog eggs or frogs... But I'm from Belgium, so it might be a little different in the netherlands.

Congrats with the additions! Your male will be an adult at age 2, a female reached adulthood at age 3. These are normal values, it might be faster if they grow much faster than normal.

Thanks

It is indeed illegal to keep frogs, but if you saw my pond you would wonder if our government had gone mad:)

Would they eat the eggs or only the larvae?

Garters adore tadpoles.
Even more than worms. :O

what about toad eggs/tadpoles???? because i just saw about ten or so toads laying them and i usually wait till they turn into toads before feeding them to my snakes... and tadpoles would be soooooo much easier to find and catch....

In the Netherlands it is forbidden to feed frogeggs and tadpoles.

Is it?

I know it's forbidden to keep adult frogs, but you can keep tadpoles and eggs until they've grown into small frogs.

I've actually never heard feeding them being forbidden.

Then again, I've never leafed through a lawbook.

Well, Christiaan,
you could always put your snakes on a leash and walk them around the pond to feed themselves. That's not technically 'feeding' them the eggs and tadpoles!:D

I can pretty much guarantee that it technically is. ;)

Hmm, don't know about the leash, I don't think they come in less than 1 cm size:)

Question: I put the young parietalises in a 35/50 cm 'smart store' plastic boxes, and I drilled 93 three mm. holes in the top. Is that adequate enough ventilation? or should I drill the whole lid?

No idea, it probably is, but I've found it simpler to cut piece out of the wall and replacing it with metal or plastic mesh. :) My 50 litre smart store has a ventilation area of 300 square centimeters (15*20cm), my 30 litre box has two 100mm holes and my 15 litre box has one 100mm hole, and I think they work well. 93 3mm holes equals to about 26 square centimeters.

Good ventilation is far more important than many people realise. I'd be inclined to drill the entire lid.

Maybe you should buy some plexiglass screening, cut a square out of both sides and the top, then hot glue gun the screen on.

I think I'll drill the entire lid then, since I will probably want to use the box for storage when the babies get too big.

Stefan, thanks for doing the maths:) Those two holes, are they posotioned opposite each other?

Yes.

Then how do you prevent draft (also draught?)?

I now have a painful wrist, and also 248 holes. A few more maybe...

Stefan-A

Fake plants in front of one or both holes slows down the airflow sufficiently. Also reduces ventilation, which is sort of counterproductive. But draft hasn't been a problem for my snakes so far.
