Okay, there's a favorite shows and music thread now, how about favorite movies? I like all the Star Wars movies, Lord of the Rings, Back to the future (watching it now), and I'll probably think of some more obvious ones for me.

I'm really into B-movies. Especially horror movies, zombie movies, sci-fi and (to some extent) fantasy. I like the Evil Dead series and the first two in George Romero's "Dead" series (and the remakes).

My main intrest would be action movies with actors like Bruce Willis, Stephen Segal or Chuck Norris to name a few. All of the Lord of the rings were great and I to like some of the horror flicks.

I'm a big movies fan and I see about any kind of movie in any kind of language. So I'm always very interested if people advice some of their 'classics'. In no particular sequence, these are some movies I recommend:

English language:
-Lord of the rings trilogy
-American history X
-Pappilon
-Eternal Shunshine of the spotless mind
-The shawshank redemption
-The godfather 1 (shame on me, but haven't seen the others yet)
-Million dollar baby

other languages:
- Daens
- Hero
- City of god ( cidade de deus )
- lola rennt
- Das boot

I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but this liste came to mind :p

Hmmm....favorites...there's so many good ones...well here goes...
Lord of the Rings Trilogy

Kiss of the Dragon
Fearless (Another Jet Li, but this one was Chinese lang.)
MontyPython and the Holy Grail (NEE!!!)
Jaws
X-Men (trilogy of sorts)
KillBill

After reading Snaky's reply I have to agree with The shawshank redemption. It was really a good one.

I like most movies that GarterGuy and Snaky mentioned, but not really the X-Men movies, Underworld or Dogma. I also can't stand any movie with Steven Seagal, Chuck Norris, Kurt Russell, or anyone of the Baldwin family. Well, except for Stephen Baldwin who was in good movies like The Usual Suspects and The Beast of War.

It is really hard for me to say which my favorite movies are, you'd first have to sort them according to theme.

ps. Dark City is better than The Matrix. ;)

Alex Baldwin (I'm pretty sure it was him) was in my Social Studies teacher's class. And some more famous people that I forgot.

Years ago, Tom Hanks was in town filming "Sleepless in Seattle".

During that time, I was a waiter at a restaurant called "Palomino"...anyway, Mr. Hanks and Nora Ephron were dining at the aformentioned restaurant. The two of them were some of the rudest diners I had ever dealt with. They whined about everything like some typical pathetic coked up celebrities (yes I know, it doesn't sound like what one would expect of T.H.).

Needless to say, I've never been a fan of either one of them since that rotten experience.

KITKAT

Sounds like me and Bob Hope... he came into a restaurant where I worked, and was extremely haughty and nasty.

Oops! I just "dated" myself! :o

My brother is a pit boss out in Wendover Nevada....he had a similar experience with Robin Williams....said he was a real jerk!!!! On the other hand, he met Will Smith, just the opposite, very nice guy.

abcat1993

Really? I can't picture Robin Williams as a jerk. And since when do famous people go out to so many restaraunts? A strange coincidence.

Stefan-A
01-06-2007, 04:03 PM
I don't think it's that hard to picture him as a jerk, even if he usually (always?) plays a likeable character. The same goes for Hanks. They're only human.

Top 5 in no particular order

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (always near the top for me. No better cast ever assembled IMO. Buddy Hackett was one of the funniest men I have ever heard and Johnathan Winters played his part as well as I have seen any actor play a part)

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (I have a wooden Badger)

Papillon (who cares if he made it up)

The Great Escape (I like Steve McQueen)

Tommy Boy (Could get bumped out of the top 5 but I still haven't seen a funnier movie since)

The Sting (could get bumped out of the top 5 but I love the plot twists)

Others that might crack the top 5 depending on my mood.

Shawshank Redemption (has anyone made more movies than Morgan Freeman? Good thing he is such a great actor)

Mel Brooks History of the World Part One (Still waiting for part two)

Young Frankenstein (Gene Wilder is one of the best comic actors I've ever seen)

Blazing Saddles (More Mel Brooks anyone)

Braveheart (the Other Mel I am a fan of, this is his best)

Gladiator (Don't really like Russell Crowe but I really liked this one)

See no Evil Hear no Evil (Richard Pryor & Gene Wilder. See above comment on Wilder, and Richard Pryor paved the way for every black comedian to come after him. Plus he was just plain funny )

Oh, and I almost forgot

Schindler's List (and not for the reason you might think. The red coat was a thing of genius.)

There are more but these are all I could think of for now. I usually make it a point to watch each of these at least once a year.

There was released in theatres today (atleast in my locale) a movie called '30 days of night' which is a vampire movie.
There are scads of vampire movies out, to be sure, however this one looks really wicked! I am wondering if the movie is actually as good as it looks in the previews, and/or whether they have once again showed all the good parts in the preview, and the actual movie sucks.

Has anyone got plans to see it? I'd like to go to a movie sometime soon, as it has been a long long time, and this genre/type of movie would be right up my alley, so if you see it, DO NOT tell me about it, but--- was it good??

Supposed to? No, not in my opinion. :) Besides, everybody has a different opinon about what makes a movie good and for many it does matter who's in it. It's just a personal observation, but I've noticed that a lot of people tend to make the good/bad decision based on how good looking the main characters are.

I'm not judging, I'm just making an observation. ;)

It does establish a lot of things, relationships for one, but it also introduces the ring itself, which doesn't have any of the sinister qualities it does have in the LotR series. It pretty much lacks the mythology altogether.

As I recall (I read the HOBBIT in 1969), it did not start out as a book, but as a series of letters by Tolkien to his son in the British Army during World War II. A true time of good vs. evil.

Tolkien is actually considered the father of what we know of fantasy worlds that have been used in many stories and games. LotR is a story primarily of good vs. evil, but it's not as simple as that. There are lessons of compassion, responsibilty, honor, love, friendship, ect. throughout the story. A lot of people have compared it to the story of the Bible, events during WWII, ect. I've read all the books including the LotR trilogy, the Hobbit, the Simerilian and also play a RPG that is based off of the Tolkien universe for more then 15yrs. now. A real basic description of LotR would be an epic story of Good triumphing over Evil and the passing on of the world to a new era. Oh and to answer James's Q....it'd have to be Legolas....he totally kicks a** and hey, he's an Elf so he's all but immortal....works for me.;)

Yeh, the Silmarillion (thanx for the spelling correction, always screw that up!) was a really hard read. Haven't read Unfinished Tales, but good to hear that someone liked it. It always worries me when a relative puts out some stuff, just after the original stuff becomes popular.

Dog Soldiers is my absolute favourite werewolf movie. Enough said.

Perfect Stranger (Hallie Berry investigates the murder of her best friend. So good.)
Children of Men (Mankind has been sterile for the past 20 years, when a young African girl--in the now war torn and immigrant-hating country of Britain--gets pregnant. Clive Owen gets roped into bringing her to safety.)
Notes on a Scandal (I'm not going to ruin the plot for you. But it's twisted and oh so good.)
Daywatch (Russian film. Sequel to the mediocre Nightwatch. Light vs. Dark. Surreal, dreamlike, but with lots of good action. Had several good strong female characters. You don't see that alot in movies today--or is it just american movies?)
Hard Candy (Girl/Psycho vs. Paedophile/Good guy? See it! So intense.)

Oh, and I second Stefan on Hot Fuzz and Planet Terror. I liked Death Proof as well. (Planet Terror and Death Proof were part of the 'Grindhouse' feature put together by Quentin Terrintino and Robert Rodriguez. They were shown together in theatres in the US, but separate everywhere else. Yeah I've misspelled a couple people's names in this post.)

Didn't really like I am Legend. It had a lot of potential, but they really messed it up. And the CGI was sub-par. And I made the mistake of finding out some of the differences between the movie and the novel..

Haven't had the pleasure of seeing Death Proof yet. For some idiotic reason, it really couldn't be found it any of the stores I've been to. It seems that the morons in charge of importing movies forgot, or just neglected to order copies of that half of Grindhouse. Finding copies of Planet Terror is absolutely no problem, for some reason.. ;)

Liked Night Watch, haven't seen Day Watch yet.

That sucks about Death Proof. It's completely different from Planet Terror, much more chill and serious, but the ending is superb.

You know, when the Bourne movies came out and I heard Matt Damon was lead, I couldn't believe it. There was NO WAY he could play Jason Bourne. But then when I finally watched the first one, I was amazed-- he really did nail it. I've got those books out again to re-read them, haven't read anything Ludlum in a long time.

This is not a favorite movie or TV show more to do with what may be a personal weird ism, but i think this might be the thread it belongs in.
I am hoping that non of the members after reading it decide to call up my local sanatorium and get them to send around the men in white coats
every time i am watching an American movie or TV show that involves the countryside then i am paying more attention to the terrain than the actors, I am thinking that looks like prime garter territory, i wonder if there are many in that area, and other similar thoughts, I am looking for bodies of water ponds streams lakes to support my fantasy's, western's in particular are prime ground for my psychotic musings, the older the picture the more it draws me in, as because of development lots of prime habitat has been lost, places like the Gene Autry ranch which was broken up and sold off to the building developers .....the movie might be supposedly set in lets say Arizona but we all know that they are usually shot elsewhere so you cant know which type of garter would live in the area being shown...but it doesn't stop me guessing.
I cant in this case blame approaching senility because i have had this habit for more years than i can remember ....the reason for coming clean is i decided on a site full of garter nuts there might be.. just maybe..someone who is subject to the same delusional behavior, and i wont then be all alone in this vast universe.

I do remember recently watching an episode of a show I watch...and the characters were out on a boat at night and they found something in the dark...and my first reaction was..."Is it a snake?"...and then I was like "What...where did that come from?"...lol...The funniest part was...turns out it was, in fact, a water snake... I have not noticed what you are experiencing however. I do find myself doing it in real life though. Now...whenever I am out anywhere...I look around at the environment and wonder if there could be any snakes around.

The only time I hated it, there was a "Candid Gamera" marathon on once, and I really wanted to watch the Gamera films, but without them picking on the movies.

Bad movie trivia..

There was a Gamera 2000 made with Steven Segal's half Japanese daughter in a leading role.

You know I have never seen The Big Lebowski. The old Karate Kid Movies are really hard for me to watch. My son makes me watch them all the time. He gets mad at me because I laugh when Ralph Macchio is getting beat up...it's just comical...he is a terrible, terrible actor. How can anyone believe Ralph Macchio as a karate master? The guy is about as coordinated as my 30 pound cat. And the Chicago soundtrack running through the movies makes me want to pull my ears off.

Season 4 of Dexter was my favorite. Looking forward to season 7! Love Breaking Bad as well. Just waiting on season 4 to come out in June. I prefer not to watch them on tv as they air. I like to wait until they're released on dvd and then try to watch two or three episodes a night. I hate waiting a week in between episodes to find out what happens :D

EasternGirl

Mike...I am exactly the same way! I can't stand watching shows on t.v. and having to wait a week for each new episode. I just wait and buy everything on DVD and then just sit and watch the whole season straight through in a week. I have everything on boxset. I watch entire series over and over again. Sometimes I watch stuff on OnDemand too.

Saw a 1 min 38 sec clip on YouTube and decided I liked it.

However, I read a bit ahead and I want to make the prediction that the show will be cancelled as soon as people start getting thoroughly confused about who's supposed to be the good guy and why all the nice characters keep getting killed. I hope I didn't just spoil it for anyone. But yeah, don't get too attached to any of the characters, the story doesn't follow the traditional "happy ending" formula. Sort of reminds me of Over There in that regard.

Current must watch list for me in no order: Breaking Bad
Game of Thrones
Sons of Anarchy
Walking Dead
Doctor Who
Fringe

Older shows that used to be on the list but are always worth going back to: X-Files, Babylon 5, Stargate SG-1 and Atlantis, Battlestar Galactica, Doctor Who, and any of the Trek series. I can't start movies, I'd be here the rest of the year.

I enjoyed the first half of the walking dead season 1, but I thought it became a little weak towards the end. I haven't seen season 2 yet but people keep insisting that it got a lot better.

I did see super 8 recently and I loved it. It seemed like a mix of of a traditional monster movie and the goonies.

If I can admit to my bad taste though, I'm a huge sci fi geek.

It was okay. It was predictable and it wasn't dark enough. They should have made it at least worthy of an R-rating.

True, and I do see where your coming from, but I think that would of lost some of the charm. If I'm honest it felt more of a feel good film than a monster film at times. Not the best film, but far from the worst. Especially with so many of the films that have been released over the last few years.

EasternGirl
08-17-2012, 09:04 AM
I think I would like Fringe..but since it is only a couple of seasons...I would get frustrated. There was a really good show they put out a couple of years back...after lost...with many of the lost actors in it, called Fast Forward...awesome show. Lasted one season and left you hanging at the end. That makes me so mad!

I know it's probably 90% bull$%#@ but I watch Ghost Adventures and Ghost Hunters (who by the way are from Rhode Island). Connor and I would watch "ghosteses" (as he would say) every Wednesday night. Now it's a weekly tradition. I love the way they scare each other and themselves!

I used to watch some of those ghost shows, but fake or not, just the thought of it potentially being real gets me a little worked up...I get scared kinda easy, and am kinda(really!) afraid of the dark(I know, what a baby, right?:p)....So I've stopped watching them.

Currently watching A Night at the Roxbury:cool: I've probably seen this movie over a hundred times(literally). Haven't watched it in a while, but used to watch it alllll the time.

Hey what did you guys think of this season's True Blood?

EasternGirl
08-29-2012, 10:51 AM
Hmmm....I love True Blood...but I go back and forth with it. I thought it was awesome the first couple of seasons...and then I thought it got kind of ridiculous. The werewolves are okay...but the meth heads and the fairies and that whole Marnie the witch (yes, the irony is not lost on me) thing was stupid. Then I thought it was looking good this season...but all of this authority and Lilith crap...I do not like at all. They need to get back to the original plot line. Oh...and they never should have killed off Jesus...I loved him. I like Tara as a vamp though.

I can tell you one thing...if they ever kill off Lafayette...I'm done with the show. Pam too...she is awesome...but Lafayette...he is the best character ever!
