View Full Version : Bloood in enclosure...

I peeked into my garter enclosure this morning and saw dried blood all over the back of the enclosure. I checked on every snake, each was there, and there were absolutely no signs of physical damage. What happened?!

Maybe it discharged out of one of their vents?

How many blood are you talking about?
Maybe itīs caused by an accident of mating that occurs sometimes.

And it's not feces for sure. It's definitely red.
It seems like there's a lot of it.
Also, this happened once a few weeks ago right after feeding time, but with less blood.

maybe it's being discharged in the fecal matter? parasites...?

I dunno bout this one, never had it happen so i can't really say.

You're not feeding it trout or salmon by any chance? The fish farms feed them a carotenoid called astaxanthin (Astaxanthin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astaxanthin)) to give their meat a nicer colour. I've noticed that the stuff turns snake feces red (reddish). I thought it was blood at first, but it didn't turn brown the way blood does when it dries.

edit: This is what it looks like, 5 days after they were fed farmed rainbow trout. Should be about 2-3 days old.

Blood would be rusty brown at this point.

Similar substances are also fed to red canaries to achieve their red color. In the wild, birds such as Flamingoes get the same substances in the foods they eat. A flamingo that is kept in captivity and not fed any carotenoids (canthaxanthin powder is the one most often used with birds), it will turn white! Canthaxanthin, astaxanthin, etc, are carotenoids. It definitely could cause reddening of the snake's feces if the food the snake ate, contains carotenoids.
