Ok!! Tell me all!! I've got a 40 gallon tank. Deep bedding... temp range, I got from Kevin... what about environment? He said they're more of an arid/dry environment species... would a woodland type setting work (tree limbs, greenery) or do they want more of a desert look? These are western hognose.
I'M SO EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!:D:D:D Any ideas, please share!! Also, pics of your hognose set ups would be awesome!!!!!

Personally, for my Heterodon nasicus nasicus, I provide a substantial depth of dry coconut fibre, a liberal helping of dry sphagnum moss, and plenty of hiding opportunities in the form of both cork bark and commercially available hides. This setup has generally worked very well for me :)

Yes... but what about for your hognose??
LOL Just kidding. Thank you. Kevin has his on CareFresh... I use that for the garters and kingsnakes... think it's a good choice for the hognose or would they prefer digging in a more woodsy-type of bedding?

Lori, I think the snake won't care what it's burrowing in. On the other hand you might prefer to see him burrow in something more 'woodsy'.:)

Reed, oh, you are lucky indeed!!! Well, when you see my babies, tell them I can't wait to meet them!!!!! I'm already getting nervous about the across country shipping... your guys certainly did great, but it's always scary.

Hey there you are!! I don't think "excited" even really covers it. :-) (You know, you could "accidentally" put those Pugets in with mine and ship them here too. I'm sure Reed would get over it...) :D

Oh, Lori, you do NOT want that!
If I stay and run your rescue so you can vacation you'll have ten times the work when you return, 'cause you'll have to try to 'rescue' the rescue!:D
The hognoses will be fine, as will the other snakes, but goats and turkeys are not my specialty, and I'm scared of horses, so goodness knows what you'd find!

Hoggies are cool. Watch them when feeding if you have more than one, very aggressive feeders.
I keep mine on aspen shavings. I was told not to keep them on sand. Anyhow great snakes!!!
Here are 2 sets of twins hatching last year...

How common are twins? To have two sets from, what I'm assuming is one clutch, seems rare. Very cute snakes by the way.

Lori, I am quite seriously thinking of getting a hog at the weekend. anything that you have foundout or advice you might have would be a great help.
my friend is picking up Boo on thursday so i will have extra room.
what temp do they need to be kept at. i am guessing about 5inches of sand is ok for substrate. how often do they need to be fed?
Lori i am really excited for you and can't wait to see pics of them and your enclosure once they have settled in. xxxxx

This was right after they came, I was holding them to warm them and then they investigated my desk a bit while Kerry went and cranked up the heat in the office. We are sweating but the snakies are doing well!!!!! They have both buried themselves in their temporary tank now... will get more pics if they come out!!
One of my bosses just came in-- the one who said, No snakes in the office-- LOL!!!! Silly man, did he really think we listen to what he says??

Lulu, I kept reading not to put them on sand, tho I honestly don't know the exact reasoning. I am using the Carefresh for now, about 6 inches deep, but am not sure if that will the final answer. I'm still trying to find more info on the best substrate for them.
Their temps should be a bit warmer than garters-- basking spot of 90, low to mid 80's for the rest of the tank. Uh oh, I don't know how to convert that to celcius... :o
The tank should have several hides as well as deep enough bedding to dig into, and also things for them to climb on. The male was already going all thru the fake plant I have in the temporary tank earlier!! He climbed in it all the way to the top. :) I was too enthralled to remember to snap a pic.
But remember, I'm still learning all this too. So if anyone needs to correct this, please do!!!!!

I haven't wanted to disturb them since we got home... they investigated their tank a bit and then disapeared. :-) I'll get some pics when I feed them. :-)

Don't want to disturb them; you'll wait till you feed them......likely story.........
You're just going to make us wait...........keeping everyone in suspense. How cruel.:D

I have been very remiss in sending pics of the hognose!! Mea culpa!! I looooooooove these two... so cute, and oh my, the female has a huge attitude!!! She will flatten her head and hiss at you when you reach in the tank, it's just adorable. The male is totally laid back tho. :)
