happy Birthday:D
some of them are looking quiet big.
Do you know thier weight?
Gijs & Sabine
03-25-2008, 02:41 PM
They are not very big (yet :D), Udo.
Today I did weigh some of them: a small one 1.27 gram, a medium one 1,76 gram and a big one 1.92 gram. So lets say they weigh approximately 1.7 gram.
zooplan
03-25-2008, 03:56 PM
My scales are not that good, I have weigh the whole clutch and divide the weight.
1,7 gr. is really nice.
When I had a clutch with an approximately weight of 3 gr. I thought they were "monsters".(radix too)

:D Yes, I know. As far as I can tell marcianus have real big babies. And last year our infernalis female had huge ones as well.
I will try to weigh all the clutches this year, might be interesting.

We're going to Hamm in september, so if you or any of your friends is going as well.......voilá ;)
And no, we're not expecting parietalis, they are still too young.

Lovely, lovely babies!!!!!
Someone tell me about why all the newborn pics I see have so much moisture in the enclosure. Does that help the babies with their shedding and cleaning off??
anji1971
05-02-2008, 07:16 PM
Awwww, they are cute! Congrats again, and again, and..........;)
Gijs & Sabine
05-02-2008, 10:32 PM
Thanks James and ladies again, and again.........:D
@ Lori: You're right about the moisture you see in the pics. When garterbabies are born they will shed right away and most of them do it immediately after the birth when they are still moist. But some of them wait too long and when they are dried up it's a lot more difficult to shed, because the first shed is very thin and most of the time doesn't come of in one piece. In that case they look like little ghosts with pieces of skin everywhere :D or they look totaly wrinkled.
You can imagine that's not very plesant for them, so we leave them on moist papertowel for one day and everything is just fine :)

If I knew we could ship them safely overseas... but would they really be able to handle that kind of shipping stress???

Yeah. As James mentioned to someone here, all garters - the Thamnophis - are all from the Americas. And there's plenty in Europe - and they didn't swim the pond.
It's about a 12 hour flight depending on where coming from/to. But it would be stressful - FURSHURE - to an animal that 'hears' through its jaw and picks up vibrations.
There are NO ocellatus like THAT in this country. Damnit.

Now, not every one you catch will look AS nice. And babies are brighter (and the pics sabine posted of course, are babies) But consider it my personal life goal to catch some as nice as sabines. =)

Rockster, not NEAR as nice as Sabines. Her's have that scruntched-up ribbon pattern. BUT... would go with considering what it would cost to ship from Sabine to here.
SO FIND THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WANT THEM!!!!!!!!!! THEY'RE GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!

Wow, it looks like I missed a few posts :D
I KNOW they're very atractive, but I didn't know they're that wanted in the States :D
The problem of cyrtopsis in the wild is their habitat. Most common are cyrtopsis cyrtopsis (which is less colorfull) and cyrtopsis ocellatus and their habitat is overlapping. That's why most of the finds are not so colorfull as our babies. But I'm sure there are pure ocellatus out there as well ;)
Gorgeous babies all of them! I can not get over the variety and numbers of baby garters you guys have.
Oh and as to blacknecks here in the US. I have two girls bred by the same male that I am hoping will give birth any day now...

Mojo, are yours crytopsis ocellatus or crytopis crytopsis?
THANKS!!!
I have cyrtopsis ocellatus. I know everyone on this board prefers the scientific name for the garters but I can barely type, let alone pronounce, cyrtopsis ocellatus and so I stick to Eastern Blackneck! Much easier to get my tongue around!

Hi! I'd be interested in a pair of T.tetrataenia.
How does it work if we want to make a deal? Could you send them, could they come by train with a backpack (sorry for the stupid joke...) or do we have to come? Do you have some available? Are they from April 2008?..
