it gets Henner upset when he sees it

he was zooming all over the place, trying to get up to the Uro tank, so he could do those guys in
- giving me evil looks too

I'm totally smitten with them and I'm trying to be discreet about it
Henner is very territorial and he's already pissed about the cats
but at least they're cats - these are lizards!
what an affront!

I particularly like the black one, very handsome guy. I've considered getting some but space limits me and when it comes down to it I would rather have another garter. In a fair world we could have all the reptiles we wanted!

Aint that the truth!

Yep, thats one of my favorite pics I have ever taken. Its actually posted on californiaherps.com on the chuckwalla page.
He must have been about 15-16 inches long. I actually ended up catching him and then let him go again.

how big do chuckwallas get?
they look large, but there's nothing there for scale, so I may be imagining things

They can get over 16 inches long, and very heavy bodied.
Here are a couple pics of me holding them.

One of the captive ones- currently 14 inches long.

the wild one. maybe 15+ inches, should have measured him.

a bit larger than my uros
nice lizards

Loren

Do you know what kind of uros they are? Are they 2 different species/subspecies? They look very different from eachother.

drache

I believe they are ornates and they are sexually dimorphic
the black one with the neon markings is the male; the sand/brown one with the yellow feet is the female
there are instances in this species where females mimic the male look
I still haven't gotten the book I ordered, but there's a decent amount of info on the web, I've got an old Vosjoli booklet, and Sean is a lizard guy
I really need to move them from their present location, because it's right across from the beardie tank and those guys are constantly at each other across the room
I've been putting a towel over one of the tanks to cut the visual and that has helped, but it's not a permanent solution

Cool, I thought maybe the one looked like an ornate. Now that you say it, I think I do remember them as being dimorphic. I researched uros quite a bit a few years ago, but forgot alot of it now.
On the location thing- isnt that just one of those thing about our hobby? Everytime you think you got everything "dialed in" , something new comes along and you have do do a bunch of work to get dialed in again.
Guess it keeps us out of trouble by keeping us busy.
They sure a nice looking.

I recently moved my chucks into a larger tank, along with the desert iguanas and a whiptail, and I might add my zebratail, and hopefully soon a fringetoed or two.
When I get it all dialed in, I'll have to post a pic. Its 5.5 feet x 2 ft x 2 ft, and in my living room. Still getting the heat/light figured out, as my house is much cooler than the reptile room.

Hows the Uro set-up going? All dialed in?
All I know(or think I know:D) about them is they love heat, like my chucks. I have my chucks basking at 110 f. , but might up it a few more yet at the peak spot. Like to see 115. Thats about what they had in the reptile room.

the temps are great
I've even gotten the male to gape a little in the hot spot
it makes them way lively too and I wish I could give them a huge tank to run around in, but I need to put in some more work before I can give them the 8'x2' I'm fantasizing about
I am considering building a 66"x18" enclosure to go in on of the spaces that I'm keeping 30G and 20G longs in - it would give them more length than a 4'x2', even if it cuts down a bit on the width
