I listen to just about everything. I was going to post the first 50 bands on my random playlist, but it would have been an unnecessarily long list and most bands seemed to represent 60's to contemporary rock, with several exceptions (reggae, country, techno, classical etc). 70's hard rock/heavy is probably what I listen to most of all.

The Presidents Of The United States Of America, Frank Zappa, Deep Purple and Pink Floyd would all have been on that list.

The music I listen highly depends on my mood and the circumstances.

When I'm at home I like something like hooverphonic, novastar, ozark henry and on the occasion some classic music ( Carmina Burana fe. ). I also like some groups who sing in Dutch, like Clouseau, Wim soutaer, Gorky...

When I go out I prefer genres techo, trance, retro house... I do not really prefer groups in those genres.

I prefer country for the biggest part, but also like classic rock. Not much preference on the artist.

I'm a great music lover as well !! I like almost everything.

- although I'm 28 I really like music from the '60 and '70
- heavy metal
- rock
- celtic music
- classic
- reggae
- movie soundtracks (dances with wolves, lord of the rings, braveheart )

and so on, and so on.....

The only music I absolutely don't like ( sorry to all the germans) is "schlager" jodelmusic !:D

Speaking of older music, it's hard to beat Louis Armstrong, James Brown, BB King, Otis Redding, Ray Charles, or Sam Cooke.

I listen to classical music the most, though. My favorite composers are Vivaldi, Mozart, Gustav Holst, Rimsky Korsakov, and Tchaikovsky. It amazes me that some of this music is 200-300 years old!

As for the most beautiful voice, it's hard to choose between Luciano Pavorati when he sings Nessun Dorma and/or Elucevan le stelle and Maria Callas when she sings from the Marriage of Figaro.

There's also room in my world for Bob Seger, Eric Clapton, Van Halen, Godsmack, Rammstein, Three Doors Down, White Zombie, Tool, and P.O.D. among others.

Oh the joy of "hair bands"!!! I personally love just about every type of music. I listen to mainly Rap at this very moment, mainly because I just put a new Kappa Perfect sub in my car and redid my entire sound system( I pretty much live in my car so music is very important). But I also listen to alternative/Grunge( yes Grunge), techno, country and the occasional oldies. Oldies mainly when doing artwork, it's very influencing.
Oh yeah and my more recent "hair band" that I listen to at the moment is " The Darkness"!!! OMG if I am every in a bad mood I just put that cd on and I am perfectly happy  . I think it's the whole "rock star man" running around in a purple body suit with a strange monster chasing him. Oh the good o'l days of messed up music videos.

Hmmmmm....I tend to go for the darker, harder stuff myself. Metallica, Godsmack, Disturbed, Carfax Abbey, HateBreed, MarilynManson, NIN, MushroomHead, Static-X, Seether, Orgy, Deftones, Linkin Park....also like a lot of the 80's stuff like Billy Idol, Cure, DepcheMode, ect. I like music with a lot of emotion in it!:D

I like this thread, although, I really don't see how classical music + Godsmack + Van Halen + POD = anybody. They're practically the complete opposites. But I do like a wide range of music (only forty years though, not 300). PINK FLOYD ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that's my favorite band. I wish my dad bought those tickets, oh well, The Wall is good enough. I listen to it every car ride. But other than that I like 80's and Red Hot chili peppers.

Everything...!

My favorites are George Strait and other country, Kansas and other classic rock, Tschaikowsky and other symphonic.

The genre that I listen to the least is Rap. I can't get past the way women are insulted by rap lyrics.

Maybe this makes me look like a diletanist (probably spelled that wrong)...

Okay, I'm being totally sincere... are there any rap songs that will probably become "classics" and will be enjoyed 10-20 years from now? What are they? I'm looking for songs that might persuade a non-rap fan that rap music has merit.

I'd say some of eminems songs, like lose yourself. But really, we have no idea of whats going to be a classic until we get there, then we'll know ;)

Cazador

With a big, nostalgic smile, I'd say that whenever Van Halen released a new album in the mid-80s, you knew it was gonna have classics. Rap's been around for a decade or more, so I'd think that some "oldies" would have stood out by now. Is "Funky Cold Medina" by Tone Loc a rap song? Maybe that counts? Brittany, maybe you could chime in here?

Never heard the song I live under a rock and listen to more recent rap. Young jeezy, T.I. etc.

I'm not a rap fan and I don't know much about the genre, but there are a few songs even I can listen to.

The most obvious "classic" would be Sir Mix-a-Lot - Baby Got Back, made just 14 years ago. I'm not saying that you would automatically like it, though. ;) I guess a few old school songs could be considered classics, too.

-_-;; lol, thats your opinion, nothing else. I'm a newer member here and I don't know how sensative you all are.. I dropped the subject because I knew what I would say would get me suspended/banned or you would become very offended and leave. Or both. There are certain places I will go into this with, others I won't. This is an area I wont. I've said thing to make even the most dedicated people on the forum leave. and I don't feel like going there, I told you to learn about music, and the " k " was sarcastic, just to get you to drop it, which you don't want to do.

Where do I go to download music online? I would just play it on my home computer and maybe make a CD. Is I-tunes the best spot? Do you use a credit card to pay for each song you want, or do you have to subscribe and get a membership?

iTunes is only worth downloading from unless you have an iPod. I was downloading from musicmatch but I got an ipod. Plus, I couldn't seem to find the right download spot for it for my laptop (which I just reformatted), so I would have to download it onto the desktop.
And you do have to make an account with both of those, pay with your credit card, and/or buy a gift card for yourself. Or you can always go Illegal and use Kazzaa (I have no clue how to spell it or if it's still working).

I download from a Russian site. There you will have to pay for the music.
About 0.10 $ for one song.
You can find complete albums there. Works fine for me.
You need a credit card.

Over here it's just the ones that upload dozens or hundreds of gigabytes worth weekly that are at any risk of being prosecuted. They don't have the resources to go after downloaders yet.

abcat1993

I agree, it would seem more effective. But I'm not quite sure that the top uploaders could be responsible for most of the uploaded material. Especially considering that bandwidth is limited, it would make sense that they'd just represent the tip of the iceberg.

All the new programs ( take bittorrent ) use the fact that so many people are online and that everybody can share a little bit of his bandwith. I'm sure, the top uploaders share a lot, but taking them on will not solve anything.

Also in my eyes the industry always tells about all the loss they have on music, movies, ... that's downloaded, which is only half the truth. If I like something, I buy it. I just wait till the price drops enough so that it's affordable (25 €/dvd is a ripoff in my eyes). And it's not everything that you download that you would buy. I even had movies I got from a friend that I liked so much that I bought them afterwards, but I'm quite certain that I wouldn't have seen the movies if somebody hadn't given them to me. Just because the movie didn't really appeal to me when I read the content.

edit: Otherwise I'd just be offtopic as hell. Just bought the best of faithless, a very good cd... Just the kind off music I like to go out on. I think quite some drivers think I'm nuts if I turn up the volume in my car :D

Stefan-A
01-06-2007, 09:06 AM
I'd like to remind the industry of my loss every time I buy a movie that turns out to be a disappointment. I guess they think it's supposed to be illegal to know what you're investing in.

The three last CDs I bought, not counting gifts and Christmas presents, were all Rammstein (Mutter, Reise Reise, Rosenrot).

I have to agree that the music industry is going about it the wrong way with suing people. You would have thought they would have learned from the movie industry. Must be 30 years ago now, the movie industry sued the makers of the VCR since it allowed people to copy their movies. They were fine with the VCR itself, just not the record feature. Well they lost the lawsuit and now make most of their money from the sale of DVD's. They were forced to change their business model to change with the times and now the music industry would rather sue then change with the times.

Hopefully they figure it out soon.

I haven't listened to much music in the last 8 years or so but my favorite groups include Styx, Foreigner, Journey, Queen

I like a lot of late 60's and 70's stuff

I mostly listened to country from about 1985 until I stopped listening and some of my favorites there were Clint Black, Blackhawk, Shania Twain, and Billy Ray Cyrus (except achy breaky heart, That is one of my all time hated songs. I liked a lot of his other ones though)

I have 6 CDs in my collection right now, and I do listen to them occasionally.

They are

The Best of the Best of Merle Haggard
Don Williams His 20 greatest hits
America Remembers Johny Horton
Neil Diamonds 12 greatest hits

Hah, I think its funny, how here in America most metalheads and such want to be a Scandanavian viking and what not, and over there, a lot of you guys seem to be all into American stuff. There are definetly great American bands, but I personally like the European folk metal scene and the things of that sort.

Man, I never thought I'd meet metalheads on a garter snake forum hah.

Here's my band, worst recording in the history of recording, since it was done in an attic in 3 days. But ya, try to imagine how it would sound if the intruments were in-tune as well.

Agreed. I read all the guitarplayer mags, and every issue has like a "viking metal" theme and the latest on Naglfar and Amon Amarth and what not. Me personally I find that musik quite hillarious, and I prefer listening to the oldschool U.S metal bands like Armored Saint and the thrash stuff like Forbidden and Exodus etc... but hey, we´re all different. I think it´s positive as long as people get into music. Stay metal!!

Tool tears it up rick, good choice, one of my fav

I never expected this thread on the forums, but who doesn't love music eh? I dig everything under the broad Rock catagory and don't mind other genera as well. I recall seeing many of the bands discussed on stage, and enjoy live music immensely. Of course I never read all 18 pages so far, but just have to mention my all time favorite band, the Who. This past spring I had the privilage of seeing the remaining "halfawho" perform here in Canada. I had thought they'd never come :)

Music is actually more important to me than herps and I can't list my five favorite snakes, but I'll try to say what I listened to on the way to work today.

The Clash "Give 'Em Enough Rope"
Darkane "Rusted Angel" --For all you Scandinavians
Apples in Stereo "New Magnetic Wonder"
Ghostface Killah "Fishscale"

A lot of traffic into the office today and hopped around on the cds a bit.

I like a lot of music, but also vehemently hate a lot too. What I hate:
Anything Christian, unless it is country from the 40's and 50's.
New Country (how could something so good, go so bad?)
Hip-Pop

This one goes along with why snakes have disappeared from spots I used to find them @ all the time;

Big Yellow Taxi

"That you don't know what you got till it's gone
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot
Hey now now, don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got till it's gone
They paved paradise to put up a parking lot
Why not, they paved paradise
They put up a parking lot
Hey hey hey, paved paradise and put up a parking lot"

Other than rap and jazz, which I'm not too fond of, I can listen to something of just about every kind of music. It all depends on what mood I'm in.
Although I do have a preference for 80's British bands. The Smiths, The Cure, all that kind of stuff.
Right now, lined up next to my workout area, are CD's by Nine Inch Nails, Enya, Live, Shania Twain, Tchaikovsky, and a lovely band out of Manchester called James. How's that for variety?:D

I have a very wide range when it comes to music. (My claim to fame)
My husband works for a sound & lighting company and, I actually met Willie Nelson when he was doing a show at a big horse farm in Lexington. I fell in love...He is SO SWEET!!! He actually invited us back to his tour bus, but we had to go pick up our son:( I love all his music. I have pics I'll try to share whenever I'm close to a scanner.
Some more of my favorites would be: Journey (old or new), Jethro Tull, The Killers, Allison Krauss, Donovan, Metallica, Peter Gabriel, Johnny Cash, & so on and so on...

Surprised to see anyone that listens to Kreator.

Korn made an outstanding first album (The demo tape is better) then the sound got more refined until Issues came out and I lost interest in buying any more.

The most outstanding metal show I have ever witnessed was Iron Maiden on the powerslave tour in the 80's. That stage was 20 years ahead of it's time.

Queensryche played 5 shows in New York state on the Empire tour, that was fun chasing around to attend all of them:D

One CD that I play from time to time is Ministry Psalm 69. it sometimes sounds like a transmission disintegrating under a fast moving bus, but it will get your aggressions out... and by the time they get to "Jesus built my hot rod" I am smiling again.

Really about the only stuff that I can't lend an ear to is pop or rap.

Even then, Some of it can be catchy... "if heaven ain't a lot like Detroit, I don't wanna go"

Oh and I'm gonna show my age, but damn those fold open record covers with the incredible artwork were the best, never the same on a 5" square..
