T.e.terrestris

A buddy of mine sent me this pic of a terrestris, not sure where he found it, but it got me thinking. Why aren't more people working with this species (or subspecies to be more exact)?? I know Don has a single female, but I don't know of anyone else in the US who's working with them. They're just beautiful snakes and I'd love to work with them, if I could get any. Well anyways, enjoy.:cool:

I'd very much like to work with that subspecies. I don't know who breeds that colour morph, though. I've only seen the extreme red one.

I'd be happy with that! Are you talking about the ones that Alan Francis used to work with?

I don't know what he used to work with, these were in some older threads.

Others were more red and had only very little black markings on their body.

I've seen some offered, but I didn't buy them because they look way to much like my parietalis. I might get confused :D

Ill have to find the species list for collecting if there on it and can b kept and bred in cali then i guess ill drive up in the spring and find some

Not in every state they aren't. I believe they are in Michigan though.

Reed, in Ca. you can posess 2 western terrestrial garters with your ca fishing license. Thats means 2 total out of the 3 subspecies that are found in ca(coast,mountain, wandering). You cannot breed or sell them. You can appply for a non- commercial permit that lets you have more than 2, but then you still cannot sell them.
That coast garter probably came from somewhere fairly close to the s.f. bay area.

Butler's Garters are protected, aren't they?

Butlers are protected in Ohio (where you can own for WC and breed them with a license), and Wisconsin for sure. I am not sure about Michigan... want me to look for you?

The T.e.terrestris are great looking specimens. My understanding of the California regs is that you can legally take two of each speciec of Thamnophis from the wild as long as you have a valid fishing licence (except the Sans of coarse).

Giant garters are protected also.... as far as I know Butler's aren't protected in Michigan..but don't quote me on that. we had hundreds of them on the air national guard base I was stationed at in the 80's. I am hoping to acquire a few for breeding this summer....:D

We have a nice breeding group of T.e. terrestris and our female will probebly have babies again this year. Only this female doesn't have a lot of red, but the babies turned out to be very nice. We have another female and she has a very different colour (can't really discribe it:confused:) And our males are very red.
We also saved 2.1 babies from last year and they are very red as well :rolleyes:
But then again, we're in Holland :(

That's the one I'm after, the one at the top that looks more like a parietalis. :D

Buggar....that doesn't help me out very much! LOL Still kills me how I can't find people who work with snakes in my same country, but overseas they're everywhere. Wow.....US snake people are really missing the boat on garters.
