I just 'Googled' it, Greg... it says the Rosey Red is the same species as the Fathead Minnow...Pimephales promelas. I don't know if that's right though.

Rosy reds are fathead minnows. They're a golden cultivated strain. Both varieties can breed with eachother etc.

We have a petstore in town that has a huge fish room- just about everything you can imagine, and they are very knowledgeable, but I asked them about rosey reds one day, and they didnt know what I was talking about. The only feeder fish they sell are goldfish and guppies. Maybe I'll have to jot down all those other possible names and ask them again, just to see if they know what I'm talking about.

How to raise Rosy Reds, Pimephales promelas, with pictures (http://aqualandpetsplus.com/Live%20Food,%20Fathead%20Minnows.htm)

This is a great site for info on the species.
So, seeing as many of us feed fatheads to our garters, we can see that perhaps a varied diet is all that is needed to keep thiamine deficiency from happening.
