View Full Version : dumpy frog

yesterday I went to Sean's to rub some pinkies on a frog as a last ditch attempt to get my tri-coloured hognose to eat
it was a white's tree frog (aka dumpy frog)
and he gave me this look . . .
like he was checking me out very calmly
now I want him
and I found out that he's very good beginner frog
unfortunately my justification didn't work out, because the snake was no more interested in the frog scented pinks than in any other
like - I've got no good reason . . .
other than that he's so damn cute and well - that look

White's are really neat Tree Frogs, Rhea. Easy to care for.

we've not come up with a good name yet
for a while it was Eddie, but it could be a female . . .

I have been deeply tempted by this species, but I know I don't have time for the care it needs... at least until I retire!:D

Can't they be sexed by the size of their thumbs, like other frogs?

I'm tempted to suggest "Jabba", but.. ;)

Looks like a very fun species to have :)

drache
02-04-2008, 04:26 AM
I read up before adopting
they're the ultimate "beginner frog"
since I already have to have feeder insects, it's not a big deal
he needs a bit of misting and fresh water
no veggies to chop . . .
and I do think Jabba was modeled on them, because they can become ridiculously obese
mine is a nicely trim specimen
I don't know about the size of the thumbs, but apparently these can't be sexed until about 6 months of age, when the males will start calling
Jeff suggested Legolas for a boy, which can be turned into Leggy Lass if it's a girl
I don't know . . .

Hi,

what a nice frog! Is this your daughter on the photo?

drache
02-04-2008, 07:43 AM
yes it is
she's gartergirl on this forum
she has been very busy in the lego universe
but the frog got her attention
maybe we should name it Lego - that's pretty gender neutral

Cute frog! My daughter has been wanting a tree frog for quite a while. How hard is the care?

yay (I kept looking at this thread to see if you had succumbed...)
now thats one cute smiley frog...

drache
02-04-2008, 04:50 PM
not at all
they don't need a huge amount of heat
they are completely carnivourous, so bugs and occasional pinkies are all they eat and as adults they only eat a couple of times per week
they climb, so they need more space vertically than horizontally
they do get their water dirty and that needs to get changed at least once a day

Wow, he's huge!!!! I kept picturing the little tree frogs around here. He is really cool!!! Congrats. :-)

Rhea, does his food have to move for him to strike at it? Or can you use canned bugs or f/t pinkies?

I have no idea and will ask Sean
I do remember Sean saying that lobster roaches might scare him and to with something a bit slower
the literature says that they're non-stop eaters and that they can become obese - that doesn't sound like they're picky eaters
I haven't fed ours yet

anji1971
02-05-2008, 08:41 PM
If they're like toads at all, then he'll eat anything that moves, and stuff that doesn't move, he'll eat anyway, just in case it moves!!:D

We bought a couple of tree frogs, too, a few weeks ago, they're not dumpy though, lol.
I have also managed to find an unusual way of housing them when I came across some heated propagators in our local garden centre. They only produce gentle heat and I have added extra ventilation holes and put the propagator on a timer just to make sure it definately doesn't get too hot. Since they have moved in, they have started barking! Totally weird sound!
I haven't seen them eat, but I guess they must do as they are still alive and there's poo in the tank. You never know with the food, it might have just crawled off.

Not feeling very green today...

Wow, what a cool idea for a set up, Esther. And very cute froggies!!

My red bellied toad will only eat something moving, and it's hilarious to watch him because he'll creeeeeeeep up on a cricket walking by but if it stops for long enough, he just moves on.

I saw a White's at the petstore today when I was getting live pinkies. He was soooo cute!!! I'd never noticed them before, Rhea, but he kind of has my eye now...

That frog is adorable!!!

That heated propagation kit is really neat!!! I'm going to look around the garden centres when the spring stuff comes out and see if they carry them over here. I bet Toadie would like something like that, and obviously it would support live plant growth at the same time. Fabulous!!
BTW, the froggies are adorable, too!:D

Nice frogs. :)

I also like the housing solution. I toyed with the idea a few times, but the ones I found, didn't seem secure enough for baby snakes.

Yeah, I was wondering if they'd work as vivs for snakes, but while the lid is fairly heavy and because of its shape not easy to lift from the inside, it's hard not to let anything escape when you open it as the whole lid lifts up. Even when I tilt it, I'm still always a bit weary of the frogs hopping out through the sides. It is incredibly cheap though! The whole propagator cost me just a little more than a large heatmat. To begin with the sides were totally steamed up but once I'd added extra ventilation holes the condensation cleared a fair bit.

Stefan-A
02-07-2008, 04:46 AM
Some of the ones I found had sides that you could open, but they all seemed pretty flimsy and there would have been quite a few things you would have had to seal.

tikichick
02-07-2008, 04:49 AM
To prevent escapes, before you open the lid, place the whole thing in a tall sided rubbermaid tub. Then if they get out, they're still within a container and easy to catch and return. I use that method when cleaning out my crickets' keeper.

Sputnik
02-07-2008, 04:57 AM
It would have to be a pretty big tub! The propagator is 57x39x25 cm.
But I was thinking, that sitting it into the bath might be an idea. As long as I leave the plug hanging out. It does get fairly heavy though. I have pebbles, a large rock and water aswell as all the plants etc. in there.

The lid of this one, Stefan, is very strong plastic.

Hylidae and Rhacophoridae are mighty big families. ;) "Green" is accurate enough. ;)

it looks kinda like a white-lipped tree frog

Stefan-A
02-08-2008, 09:49 AM
All tree frogs look pretty much the same, I couldn't even swear that it belongs to Hylidae. :) But the white-lipped tree frog is fairly common in the pet trade and it does have that white stripe.

“All tree frogs look pretty much the same”

Oh I don’t know about that, this cute little guy is a Gray Treefrog, Hyla versicolor that I found on my sidewalk last summer. Aside from those great little fingers it looks kinda like a toad.

I wouldnt use a whites dumpy to rub pinks on......Use tuna water for your pink scenting.

Nice froggy there by the way!

GarterGirl
02-16-2008, 09:16 AM
Wait, does she literally rub the pinkies on the frog?

drache
02-16-2008, 09:27 AM
I did
and it was for a snake that in the wild has an amphibian diet - hence no tuna

GarterGirl
02-16-2008, 09:28 AM
i would certainly feel weird if someone was rubbing pinkies on me.
and which one is it?

RichardA

Whites are very toxic....and hognose do not eat tree frogs for any reason...LOL

Tuna water gets the response you are looking for most of the time....I raise hogs by the way.

do you know much about lystrophis pulcher?

RichardA

They are one of the pickiest as juvies......try "braining" a pinky mouse. If you have tried tuna water, and native toads for scenting and nothing works, try putting it in a small deli-cup or small paper sack with the prey overnight.

Sometimes you can buy a few small lizards and get them to feed that first time then throw a pink in there right after. Live will get a response quicker too.

Lori P
02-17-2008, 07:29 AM
I can relate. I like a quiet morning too. But if the horses and donkeys see me moving around in the house, it doesn't stay quiet for long as the donks start BRAAYYYYYING for their breakfast, and then the turkeys start yelling and Rio the goat starts butting the front door. Sigh!!!!

GarterGirl
02-17-2008, 07:31 AM

Does he literally butt the door?

Lori P
02-17-2008, 07:33 AM
Yes. Hard. You start hearing this "whump Whump WHump WHUmp WHUMP!!!!!" It gets louder as I ignore her. And sometimes she whams the sliding glass door--- I'm so afraid she'll break it one day. I RUN to feed her when I hear her hit that!!!!

GarterGirl
02-17-2008, 07:34 AM
Well, I hope she doesn't break it one day. :)

Lori P
02-17-2008, 07:36 AM

GarterGirl
02-17-2008, 07:39 AM
Um... maybe you could live in the basement? With all the storage? And boxes? And... bugs? They'll crawl all over your face!
