This came up somewhere before and I have been intrigued for ages...

Reading through your posts, it seems that more reptile keepers prefer cats to dogs or at least are more likely to keep cats. Is that really the case or just coincidence?

So what is it for you.. CATS or DOGS?

Definately cats for me! :D

Cats for me, too.

Cats are usually more of a female thing, men usually prefer dogs. Which makes me even more odd. ;)

Cats .... :) they're closer to reptiles lol :D

i like both, but my boyfriend doesn't like dogs so i won't be getting one until we get a bigger house. :)
I think cats have more of a snakeish personality, dogs are like, 'i'm people just like you' whereas cats are more, 'i'm an independent predator. give me some respect suckah.'

Yeh cat person here too. For me it's all about personality. Dogs just seem to love everyone and are always excited about things and are always willing to please...to the point of it getting sickening. While cats I think are more genuine. When my cats play with me or give me attention, I know it's because they really want to and really care, because if they didn't....they just tell me to sod off.:D Makes them a lot less one dimensional then dogs I think.

Cats obviously....They are just... well....not as stupid as dogs!! (Dogs chase their tail thinking its some weird thing attached to their butt......cats know that their tail is their tail.....)
I do like dogs, but prefer cats....

Actually, I do love dogs too, but they can be a big commitment... what with 'walkies' and all. Cats are the easier option.........

But dogs do eat poo then lick your face.:D

I love both
I grew up in a dog family
but since I already have a child, I'm opting for cats as pets
dogs are so needy
and Jeff absolutely doesn't want any
but Mikhaila and I go to the rescue and take dogs for walks - all the fun without the vet bills
oh yeah - and there's that . . .
any medical intervention that'll cost $75.- on a cat, will be $500.- on a dog

I prefer cats to dogs, mainly because of the care. I don't really take kindly to being woken up at 3am during a blizzard in January because someone has to pee!
And having a dog just seems like having another child, one that never becomes independent.
Now that I am older, I find myself less inclined to have any pets with fur. I just don't have the ambition to vacuum every day, or buy lint rollers by the dozen. I like being able to wear black clothing without hair all over it!

LOL.....I feel your pain....I have a huge white cat and I wear a lot of black. Really sucks!!!! Especially if it's at night, you get dressed and all looks ok and then go out to a club where they have black lights and suddenly you're all lit up with cat hair!

Each species views the world very differently. I do not find either 'smarter' then the other. A dog is a pack animal thus the status of the household is very important to them. That's why they are so sensitive to the mood in their environment & feel the need to be part of it. Cats are primarily concerned about their territory. They live solitary lives ... I share my life & home with both ;)

I love both, but I prefer dogs more. Because they are always there for you, where as a cat is only there for you when they feel like being there lol. But I do love both. ;)

My breed, Turkish Angoras, are noted for being "dog-like" and "devoted"... and I do find that they are there for me. In fact, you can read a cute story about travelling the cat show circuit, and the girl who "mothered" me during a migraine that was brought on by my car breaking down on the road... the story is 2-3 paragraphs near the bottom of the page.

TURKISH ANGORA CATS - Antioch Turkish Angoras (http://www.angelfire.com/oh/turkishangora/antioch/mimi.html)

And more currently, there is Shadow... when I am watching a sad movie, and my eyes mist up, Shadow jumps to my lap and is all over me, licking and rubbing her face against me, like "What's wrong, Mom?"

But we have "his and hers" dogs too... Danny and Riley.

GOSH! I don't have to CHOOSE, do I? :D

Cats are just barely above being snake food in my opinion:D. I'm a big dog guy all the way. But seriously, I dont hate cats- I'm just not really into them. I grey up on a dairy, and big dogs were the only pet that could keep up with the motorcycles, and go everywhere I went.

it's a fantastic combo of breeds
and they turned out great
I know I talk of dogs as being too needy, but a lot of that is the sour grapes thing
dogs are the one thing Jeff puts his foot down about
and yes, we can't really afford one right now
but Loren - I'm envious of you
and the other day, when I met the dog Sean pulled out of the rescue for himself, I was totally envious

Person who likes dogs need slaves around them. If you like cats you are the slave of your animal and don't know it. I've got three cats. They wake me up at four o'clock in the morning and likes their food. After I feel happy, because I trained my cat's so, that they doesn't wake me up a second time.

drache

ha
I've taught our cats never to expect food right when we get up
they also don't get access to our bedrooms
but so far - no whining at the doors
the days of rolling out of bed bleary eyed because Fritz just walked across my chest are long gone, and so are the ones of Mu-shin howling by the door
one cannot really train a cat, but one can sort of channel their expectations

I shall not be trained!

dogs aren't necessarily slaves either, but one absolutely cannot have them be the boss

Cats and snakes, well cats don't come when you call them either (unless they are hungry).:D:D

Besides you can't train a cat to retrieve a pheasant, and How can you resist that face?

Well, my cousin's cat didn't have to be trained to retrieve pheasants, it used to drag them home on its own initiative. :D

A cat-owner is doing what his cat is saying and is happy, because he thinks, the cat is doing what he likes.

Dogs are fine too, but I prefer cats more. You have too teach tehe dog to go to toillette outside, to wash him when he is dirty from outside, to teach him to walk at feet, to be fine to other people, not jumping up at them, you've to take care, that there are no fightings with other dogs and so on. You haven't got to teach a cat so much. It's enough if she don't kill your flowers and other accessoirs and don't go at the table.

But if you have a well trained dog it's a fine thing. Of course I like them, but dog's smells allways bad. If you are used about it you ignore it. And to train a dog isn't my thing really.

cat piss is one of the most persistent noxious odours on earth
it'd be tough for anything coming from a dog to compete with that

Loren
01-20-2008, 04:17 PM
Bo and luke (my dogs) smell pretty dang bad if they havent been bathed in a while(or more than 3 hours for that matter), but they live outside most of the time so it doesnt matter much. I do have a crate that I put in the house when it gets really cold at night, so then I either bath them or just put up with stink for a few days. In the summer,I hose them off just about everday so its not bad. But its not real easy to bath those big boys in the winter.

Amen to that. Male cat pee and male goat pee are just about the worst, lingering smells out there.

Loren

I raised a male goat one time- and it was the LAST time ! The type of stink that burns your nose. Plus that sucker kept getting out because all of our pens were designed for cattle, and then it would charge after me. I thought that goats ramming you in the behind was just a cartoon thing until it happened to me a few times.

(LOLOL) (Snicker) Sorry. :-) Hope your butt has recovered nicely. LOL

Actually, my bucks were always sooo sweet. The problem I had with my two Nubian bucks, Zydeco and Zanzibar, was they were so friendly that they wanted me to rub and love on them all the time... and man, you just can't love something that smells like that but so much. Zanzibar passed away a few years ago, Zydeco lives with a friend now and has 28 does all to himself so he's pretty content. :-)

But there is nothing that gets that buck smell off of you. And when all the does cycled in the spring and drove the bucks into full rut, heavens, you could smell my property up the road, I swear!!!!

Loren
01-20-2008, 06:22 PM
Sounds like Zydeco has the life!
I wouldnt say my goat was sweet- more like tasty :)
I didnt know I had eaten him until it was in my belly, then my mom told me, becuase she knew I wouldnt have eaten it if I knew. (this was many years ago, I was like 10 or 12).)

I can't eat the meat from intact bucks-- toooo strong. But I do love goat meat. I really don't know why it's never caught on in the US. I like it better than beef. One meat I just can't aquire a taste for is sheep or lamb.
