hello. Im interested in information regarding the keeping of garter snakes.
I already have one Cal. King snake and I am considering to try my hand with the local garter snakes.
I am from Vancouver, Canada and I am wondering if it is legal to keep wild caught snakes in the area.
Thanks for your help.

Welcome aboard. :)
This is indeed the right place to find information about garter snakes. May I suggest that you start by reading through the http://www.thamnophis.com/caresheets/index.php?title=Garter_Snake_Care_Sheet, found in the Articles section.
Hi, from Oregon, Daniel :)
Hi and welcome to the forum, Daniel. The care sheet link you were given in earlier replies will help a lot on the needs of Garters. I have heard they are legal to capture and keep in Canada, but I would check local laws to be safe.

I am from Vancouver.
My Dad was born and grew up in Vancover. I've never been (yet), but I will one day, as I have dual UK and Canadian citizenship.:)

I did some more researching, and it appears that it is illegal to hold in captivity an animal that is native to BC. So this limits what kind of garter I could get.
thanks for the welcome everyone
I wonder what my possibilities are now to getting a garter.

What a strange law! I'm sure you could find a US Garter in pet store!

how hard is it to bring one in from the US?
can US breeders ship to Canada?
it probably involves reams of paperwork

What about garters native to other provinces?(Easterns, Maritimes etc..)
There are people in Canada who breed/sell garters--not as easy to find as the US but they are around. You might get some luck that way.
