Hi Guys,
As our regular members will know, Lori's beloved dog, Jewel, was unwell possibly due to a venomous snake bite, and has since passed away. I will let Lori give you the details herself when she returns to us.
You may be aware that Lori works very hard to run an animal rescue centre in Virginia. Here is a link to her web-site:
Home (http://www.newhoperescueva.com/)
If you look through her site you may notice there is a 'wish list' of things the centre needs. Perhaps, out of respect for Jewel and for Lori, and if any of our members live close enough, they might be able to help with this list. Or perhaps other members living further afield might want to offer a little help in some small way, to help Lori to continue with her sterling work.
I know that one of our membership has already shown great kindness to Lori, and I salute her for that.
I'm sure many of us understand what Lori is going through just now, as we may also have lost family pets, albeit in less tragic and dramatic circumstances.
Thanks guys.

Oh James. Darn you, you've got me all weepy again. Thank you so much. You and Marian have been absolute angels. I wish I could hug both of you in person.
I want to thank you, all of you, for all of your warm wishes and support. How many times can we say what a terrific group of people we have on this list... you all have become so important to me. Thank you guys. Truly.

Stefan, I think that's a wonderful idea. Jewel was a very happy, fun loving, deeply affectionate dog. She was also very dignified and one of those truly good souls... I can't remember ever telling that girl "no" and certainly never yelling at her for a thing. She put up with all of the hundreds of rescue animals that came thru here for the past 9 years and she never complained. She mothered quite a few sick puppies and kittens and even a few baby goats. I think she would be very happy to know her influence spread across the seas and that you could help an animal in Finland. Thank you!!!!!!

Lori, I knew you ran an animal rescue, but until I read your website, I don't think it dawned on me just how much strength and dedication it takes to do such a job. I am in awe over what you have accomplished, and if I am ever in the financial position to do so, I will be honoured to donate and help you. My daughter wants to be a veterinarian when she grows up, so I am going to show her your site, maybe it will give her ideas on things she can do and help with as she learns.
God bless you and those who do what you do, Lori. The animals you help are eternally grateful, I'm sure.:)
Hello Anji ... VERY nicely said :) It is a great website ... It would be great if perhaps folks in the area (Virginia) could donate some of the items that are listed or arrange for such. Word of mouth can be a powerful thing ... Following is a great picture of JEWEL in happy times. She has great expression in her eyes wouldn't you say ?? Very soft & loving ... :)

Awwwww, you guys are so kind and sweet. I had a rough day today, as the vet called to say her ashes were back... and that makes it so very final. To top it off, after feeding all the animals tonite and coming back in, I stood at the door after all the other dogs had come in and called for Jewel... you know how you just do it out of habit... and then it hits your heart like a ton of bricks that she's not coming back in the door. :-( :-(
Here's a cute pic of Jewel, our pug Tiki and my hubby Jamie snuggling...

And here she was with little Mr. Mongo, a chihuahua that we also lost this year. They were great pals.

Natalie, he was a darling.........so sorry to hear that, and he was very young too.:(
Seizures are so scary to see.......my aunt lost one of her dogs to them too, and it really is painful to watch them go through it.
But at least you know he's at peace and having fun up in doggie heaven now.:)
Hello again Natalie ... So sorry you lost that sweet little boy. I had a dog that had grand mal seizures since she was 5 yrs old. She required daily meds meant to somewhat minimize their frequency. She passed at home when she was 10 yrs old.
Best Wishes,
Lori P

Oh, Natalie, so sorry... your little Panda Bear was adorable!!! I can also relate to the seizure thing, have had a few dogs with them that we were able to keep under control with meds, but then my cocker Coconut passed a couple of months ago after just a month on meds. You just never know. I bet they're all playing together now and probably getting into some kind of trouble!!!

Always take more hugs, Lulu. Thank you so much. I just found out the other day that the man who lived in this house before we bought it was bitten (in the fall no less) by a copperhead right in our front yard!!

Unfortunatly there is nothing you can do to change what happened now but you can make the local, locals aware and also if you move house then let the new owners know because it might have been a different story if he had let you know.
Hey Lori, I'm a member of the San Diego Zoo & get a magazine they publish monthly. This month's mag contained a lengthly article about a wild cat there that was bitten by a rattlesnake. Needless to say the Zoo has their own wildlife hospital onsite & they also stock the most diverse supply of ant-venom in the country. The cat bitten was about the same size as Jewel. They pumped anti-venom thru the cat for 2 days, turning her over every hour for the first 24, then did massive blood transfusions. By day 3 she came around and she did pull through. The description of the wound & effects sounded exactly like Jewels, though I suspect Jewel did not get the full dose of venom as this cat did. Without access to anti-venom and a dedicated full time staff knowledgeable about such rarities it sounds grim ... Amazing that Jewel had the spirit within to hang in with not too much else ...
Best Wishes,
Lori P

Wow. I'm so glad the cat made it. Yes, one thing Jewel had was a strong spirit. We went for a really long woods walk this weekend with all the dogs (and several goats and the turkeys trailing behind, lol) and I could feel her so strongly... she loooooved our woods walks. What a girl she was.
