Since I'm new to garters, my opinion is based solely on how purty they are
I like the melanogaster and san francisco :)

I have yet to see a garter I don't like!!!
But if I had to pick, then top of my list is a silver eastern, or a Puget.

I like T. s. parietalis, for no other reason that I started with them and I like the way they look. As they're common garters, they also grow to a respectable size compared to other species.
And T. e. vagrans, because they'd eat the tank if it just smelled like food. Actually, I've seen both of mine try to do just that. And they're really mellow. Well, at least the ones Ive got. They're just tons of fun.
Then there are all those stunning morphs of all the other snakes, especially of T. ordinoides. And there was this one T. e. terrestris in a thread not that long ago, that was just incredible. :D

I like the cyrtopsis cyrtopsis. They are a bit different in their behaviour as other garters, but where the first garters I started with.

Thamnophis radix. They represent everything that's good about Garters.

At this moment it is T. hammondii.

This should be worth no question:
Red sided Garter snakes are the best of course.
Easy to handle,
all time snoopy,
can become big,
are allways beautyful,
there are comming some interessting morphs to breed
and last but not least they are red

I've been giving this some thought and I'm becoming less and less sure
I have T.s.sirtalis, T.s.parietalis, T.s.concinnus, T.s.pallidulus, T.radix, T.marcianus, and T.e.vagrans
I like them all
in terms of ease, none of them have been difficult, except perhaps for my wild-caught concinnus a little
in terms of looks I really like the melanogaster, the hammondii, and the atratus

I love them all, but right now I'm really into the Maritimes (T.s.pallidulus)..I like how variable they are (like Easterns (T.s.sirtalis)...but I can't work with them because they're a native species)...I can have lots of different looking snakes but they're all the same subspecies...so I can mix and match...LOL. Also like that not a lot of people work with them, although that makes them hard to get.

I like easterns, I have one that will eat absolutley anything you put in front of it on tweezers, and it is also starting to get some color too it. I also really like my gulf coast ribbons, since they aren't kept as often as other Thamnophis species.

Yeh, I'm trying to work with the high greens and high reds. Haven't found any quite that nice blue/green yet though. That pic is one that got me really interested in Maritimes.

Parietalis for me.
Started with them...And I think they are still the most fun to watch! Most species are a bit shy...parietalis is always! out in the open...very curious as well! Great eaters and growers!
