now here is what we started with when we didnt have all the supplies yet. its was ok, but Rook didnt like it much because she cound move around much with cover, she had to go out in the open to attain any other cover lol

here is her tank now, the plants are real: 2 ground covers, a vine type and a bush type, they are just babys now so they will grow and will just be kept trimmed back, and the vine one will be trained to wrap around stuff. she LOVES it, she is comming out a ton more now cus with the plants she can move around while always have some cover near by. the slate is now set up over that one half as that is where the heat mat is and the heat wasnt penitrating the peat, so it was much to cold before.

It sure looks interesting. :) What kind of soil are those plants growing in? Can they stand the peat's low pH? How easy would you say it is to clean?

Looking very pretty, Shayna.:) I hope you don't find the live planting too labour intensive.

the plant thing was studied carefully, and we went to an actuall greehouse told them what we wanted and what it was for, and they gave us the plants that would be ok in this enviroment. plus my dad is a horticulturalist, so I always have plant help at my fingertips lol

the plants are in potting soil, which is under the peat. under the water dish is also a hide, so the stuff under there is just peat as well.

It looks lovely Shayna! I am also curious as to how the live plants work, especially when it comes to cleaning. I tried doing that with the toad's tank, but they just kept digging up the dirt and uprooting all my plants!

lol the plants are easy to clean with by misting with a spray bottle then just wiping 'em off. the only tricky part about the peat is getting around the plants lol. as for maintience, the plants have to be removed on occasion anyhow in order to keep the roots from intertwining, so at that time the entire tank can be scrubbed, otherwise the just peat needs changed, which is pretty simple, the plants need cleaned, again simple with a spray bottle, and all the easyily removeable things like the slate, rocks, hides, water dish etc.. are all easily removed for cleaning. the work doesnt bother me, the thing my mom and I enjoy about our pets is useing as natural of stuff as we can. my dogs eat Raw, we breed all of Rooks food ourselves etc... is it more upkeep? yup, but it also keeps the creatures healthier and is a lot more fun for us ;)

good setup. I've never thought about using tile. What makes it better than aspen or cedar? I use aspen. Does the tile let the UTH heat through?

the tiles let the heat through perfectly, they are easy to clean, dont need replaced, costs about $5, plus it looks pretty lol
