This is just my opinion - and I'm not even planning to go. I'd look into trying to change the date. Not trying to brown-nose LuLu, but... She does have a long way to go and college is so important.

I know it would mean a lot to me to have people work around my college or work schedule across the pond because they liked me and wanted me there bad enuff...

Now, if the date changed and LuLu could come but 10 others couldn't then I'd look at the first given date.

I just think it's only fair to work with someone that wants to come so badly, is willing to spend the money to come so far, and has put forth a valid reason for scheduling difficulties. And this isn't the first time she's asked about the date and mentioned college.

To be fair to her, I think a decision should be made - tyring to change the date - and LuLu be given an answer so she's not hanging in limbo.

Sid, didn't you say another date would be possible?

The 20th of Jul 2009 is fine with me.

I'll pm Wayne and see if he and I can work up an agenda to at least some degree.

If I want to go to the meeting (and I really like to) I have to make my plan now and start saving money or looking for a cheap flight.
It would be nice to fix a date and make some plans for the program.

Further it would be interesting to have even one European member with permission to im- and export snakes.

That would make for an interesting plan, We could have snake orders from American breeders shipped here, and have them all in one place for pickup.

I hope much of the visitors will bring snakes to the meeting as it is usual on the EGSA meetings.

Sounds like a (zoo) plan:D

The facility is available for any date agreed upon, But I need the date to be a commitment, since I will need to announce the park is closed to the general public on the dates decided upon.

I have done the research pertaining to local laws, and we are free to trade in any species aside from Eastern Garters (Thamnophis Sirtalis Sirtalis) the only native species.

Please respect the local laws, that is very important especially if there is to be another meeting someday.

Shuttle service to and from the Elmira airport is provided, We have a small motor coach with beds for anyone who is not comfortable with sleeping in a tent.

Another way to shave expenses would be for USA residents to coordinate a "car pool"

By sharing the travel expense, it could make it easier for some members who could otherwise not attend.

I will be driving, & will pick up Aundrea on the way!!We may have to bring one or 2 of the kids... the only way we can convince our men to let us go!!

I am a go with any date as of now.. I don't have a full time job, as of yet, If I do, I ill take leave when the date is set.

I can't wait to meet all that are coming...:):)

That brings me to yet another subject, Distraction will be provided for children, so anyone with kids please feel free to bring them along.

We have plenty for kids to do while the adults flip rocks.

Properly coordinated it could be quite an affair...:D

I will be booking my flight for 20th July

I guess it's for as long or as short as you like, Lou.... What's the chances of us all being available on the same few days? I guess the longer you stay, the more members you'll meet.

The door is open as long as you need it.

James and Lou - I'd be insulted if you did not at least let me drag you guys off to things like the lakes and the glen before you have to depart.

However it would be financial suicide if I tried to close down operations for a full two weeks:eek: There are ways around many things, if you don't mind a little noise.

I know how you guys feel, I once came to the UK, when we planed it out, I decided to stay long enough to see London, Manchester, Liverpool, Sundeland, and many points in between.

Another close airport if you guys wanted to shuttle somewhere else in the US is Rochester (You will have to look it up) it's about an hour away by car.

Someone bring me a can of REAL mustard powder please.

When Colmans started selling in the USA, they "Americanized" the mustard.

A good can of English (real) Colmans should have enough "bite" to clear sinus cavities.

Works for me.

Before I announce that the grounds are closed, I'd like to make sure that this date is agreed upon by as many as possible.

It's great how this evolved from a lot of question marks into a solid plan.

I can only imagine how much money will be saved by NOT having to rent any grounds, not paying camping fees, etc...

I won't be available July 25 (Sat), that is the last day of the county 4H Youth Fair - all 4 of my kids are involved with 4H. I would only be available Sun. afternoon since we go to church Sun. morning. But I guess you need to pick what works for those coming from further away.

Commemorative tee shirts.

Ladies and gentlemen of the Thamnophis community, I'd like to announce plans for pressing souvenir tee shirts for the world meeting held at the Rocky Roost grounds in central New Yorks state in July of 2009.

The initial design of the shirts is still open to suggestions, Simple or elaborate? cheap and quick or do we go with a multi coloured silk screen featuring garter snakes on the front and text on the back?

This will be no minor undertaking either way, so we will need solid pre-order commitments including your shirt size prior to printing.

You need not actually attend the meeting to have a shirt, It's understood that many folks wish they could attend and have reasons why they cannot.

Over the next few weeks I'd like to hear input from members so we can finalize the design and begin preparing the artwork.

As with any custom manufacturing job (printing the shirts themselves) the larger the order is, the lower the cost per shirt will be.

I have flushed my PM box empty so feel free to fire away with your suggestions, I promise you won't get any messages about my box being full (not right away anyhow)

Following a suggestion made by Sid, I drafted this as a beginning to the design for our shirts.

The area where it says "garter snakes here" will be the place for the picture(s) of our choosing.

I was thinking that maybe we could launch a poll for a month to decide if we want one snake or a collage of several.

Then perhaps decide what species we would like to have on the front.

Tetrataenia anyone??

I feel rather strongly about using member submitted photos for this:cool:

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/medium/work.jpg

On the back would be text - "World meeting 2009" and some other message we would like to show off every time we wore it.

"Thamnophis.com where discerning garter snake fans call home" or similar.

Great looking shirt. I'll need 6. Will any kids sizes be available?

infernalis
11-30-2008, 08:23 PM
Steve, Since I will require pre-order payments to pull this off, I can have as many printed as needed.

Hopefully we can keep the graphic modest enough that it will fit on children's shirts as well as adults.

The printing firm will create "screens" that allow the inks to pass and the real cost lies in that part of the process.

dashnu
11-30-2008, 08:24 PM
imho, That should be all for the front. The back should be a collage.

I'll sport mine all the time :D

reptile3
11-30-2008, 08:28 PM
I would need 4, 2 for me(I like to have 2 of everything) & 2 for my kids.

Sid great idea, Wayne thanks for the diagram. I think on the front just the thamnophis.com then on the back world meeting 2009 with a collage of snakes. Preferably ones from our WONDERFUL members.

but whatever you all decide, i will still get 4 of them!!:D:D

aSnakeLovinBabe

Black is so much better :D

Wayne, I may be able to help you design something! Perhaps, a custom piece of artwork is in order instead of a simple photograph. photographs are so... square! always though they looked funny on t-shirts  It would be neat to have world meeting 2009 surrounded by a "weave" of different species all teh way around it. Not sure you know what I mean by a weave, I'd have to show you. It's like the snakes would be circling all the way around the words in a repeating pattern, but each snake would depict a different subspecies.

But aside from that, I am putting in a vote of no on tetrataenia... for a few reasons. They already get so much hype... If i had to choose one single species to put on a shirt, it would be radix. I beleive radix are said to be the foundation of garter snakes... am I wrong?? lol!

Shannon, I figured the forums favourite artist would be chiming in soon.

And you are very right, Perhaps my vision is influenced by motocross tees and concert tees.

An artistic rendition of snakes done in a fashion similar to those tees would be a real show stopper.

Envision one focal point low on the shirt, several species "radiating" from that focal point outward as if they were all emerging from a den or hide.

Then in a fashion similar to a concert shirt instead of saying "World tour 09" have it say "World Gather '09"

We could press the shirts in different colours, Olive would be a gartery colour, or red, orange, yellow.....:D

Draw as you will and let us have a look;)

I just Saw Steve's post, My radix says we simply must have a San Fran in there!!!

Everyone wants one, now they can have it! and still be legal.

If I ever were to actualy get a tattoo, it will be an Infernalis or Tetrataenia.

Being somewhat more conservative in my tastes, I'd prefer just the Thamnophis.com logo on the left breast, maybe with 'World meeting '09' underneath.
I would never wear a typical 'commemorative' T shirt.
Hey, but that's just me, no doubt I'm in the minority.

Radix are great, but I think a multi-species design would be better. There is so much variety in garters, why limit the design to just one? There's my thoughts!

James, the nice thing about this planning process, we can all be happy.

The printer could certainly press a number of shirts front only:D

Since they simply flip them over to print the backs, we could do it both ways......

Was my train of thinking too far off about the Tetrataenia?

Every time someone posts a picture, all the American members say how badly they want one, So I assumed we could fill the wish in picture form on the shirt. (also to boost public awareness of the species and why it is in peril, whenever someone neutral were to ask "what kind of snake is that" the person wearing the shirt could tell them)

once again it's taken me some time to catch up with this thread
here are my thoughts
personally I'd like to go more for simple and elegant, rather than busy and screaming
logo on the front, and something very simple on the back
personally I'd prefer it not to be a tetra, because I don't have one, and don't need one, but a tetra would be fine
it all depends on how it is done and I hardly ever see shirts with animal images that I like
I should go look at the ones I do like and see what distinguishes them, so I can be more specific

Hey guys, its overdue, so I am going to create a web page dedicated to the world meeting, so we can have everything like directions, maps, agenda and what not in one tidy place.

The tee shirt consensus seems to be simple, just the logo and some simple text "World meeting 2009" on the left breast of the shirt.

adamanteus
01-10-2009, 02:10 PM
I’m not sure about the idea of an ‘agenda’. Personally, I would rather have no rigid pre-arrangement of things to do. Of course I want to meet other members, but I really want the bulk of my time to be spent ‘herping’. I will be up and out to a different spot every morning before sunrise.
Do we really think that fireworks, dogs and small children are conducive with the herp-meet we originally talked about?
I don’t want to appear to put a damper on things, I just feel it’s moving away from the initial idea and more towards being an outdoor party.

drache
01-10-2009, 03:11 PM
certainly no fireworks and I doubt that's what you had in mind anyway, Wayne - just assuming . . .
I personally wouldn't mind having some sort of meal with everyone at some point though, and if James is going to be gone by that time, maybe it doesn't have to be breakfast, although I do love a good breakfast
are we bringing any snakes to trade?
are there things we should bring, or things we definitely shouldn't?
there may be one or two things we do want to pre-schedule, but for the most part I prefer unstructured as well
I do like the idea of keeping all the useful info in one place, but I would prefer this place to be on the forum somewhere, rather than off-site
thanks Wayne

I'm afraid it doesn't look good, Rhea. ;)

On the evening of July 25th, who is up for a fireworks display???

My treat.

(Any excuse to detonate explosives with an audience:D)

The only reason I suggested that was I keep getting constant questions about details, directions and what not.

From my end it would be easier to build a page with detailed maps and such, of course if it is preferred to place it on here where every posted reply "pushes" the information further down the list, then I am fine with that as well.

The date information was many posts back, I don't mind trolling for information.......Yet people keep asking "What are the dates" and "How do I get there"

Now a reasonable question, If we are camping, wouldn't an "after hours bonfire party" with some fun activities only sweeten the concept?

I thought it was just a meet up, we have a good time, talk about herps & such. Maybe some hiking, looking for snakes. I will be having my two kids, 14, & 5. It will also be my son's bday. July 26th.

I am up for anything, I just would love to meet all of you who are going.

It certainly is a big enough property that if anyone should take offense to certain activities, we can convene in separate corners at certain hours.

One thing that really needs to be taken into consideration, is that we are dealing with a large group of people with many different mindsets.

One cannot forget that our herps may be the only thing we have in common, There will undoubtedly be some folks who want to engage in boisterous activities, and some who would rather have a peaceful evening.

So why not have a "quiet zone" and a "party zone" so the night owls that wish to stay up and raise hell have their own little corner to do just that, and another area where quiet folks can congregate.

I deal with this exact scenario all summer every summer, masses of people congregate and camp out, some have small children and prefer to be left in peace, while others will park their SUV complete with the 1000 watt HiFi system, open the doors, and blare away, sometimes on the same evening.

Lets not forget that we have the entire west half of this town at our disposal to hold this function.

I had a nice discussion with James last night on this issue, And have faith that our bases are covered.

If we start asking people to leave their kids home, or the dog, it may very likely cut attendance in half.

Yes herping and observing wildlife will be the core activity, but it's also a celebration of friends and this wonderful group we belong to.

There is also 10,000 acres (no exaggeration folks) available for us to go and see all sorts of wildlife, and not everyone will be able to participate in everything.

The "toilet man" runs his business so close to here, I can call Rob and have a dozen toilets set up in 30 minutes or less.

There is undoubtedly enough room that we can all get along without anyone having a less than optimal experience.

And even though I am more than happy to give tours of my snake room, It will be done on a small personal basis, one or two of you at a time...

More details as we get closer to the date.

The boundaries are inside the purple lines, for camping and activities, plenty of room.

Hey James, can this forum put a sticky up? like reminders that stay at the top of the home page? that would be a good way to give people the info

That's not even counting Sugar hill state forest, 10,000 acres of woods, with trails...

I grew up here, so I know all of it very well.

The Gilfillan's(6 of us and maybe a couple tag-a-longs) from Iowa are planning on going. As long as gas prices don't get to high before then.

pardon me for bringing up a potentially difficult subject, but it's nice to have clarity
the host and main organizer of the planned meeting is not a forum member at this time and this thread seems to have tanked
I find this disappointing and I'm wondering whether anyone else would like to help pick up the thread and see that we can still have a thamnophis.com world meeting this year

If the gas prices stay down the Gilfilan's from Iowa will be there with many a radix in tow.:D Looking forward to meeting as many of you as possible. Travel chances don't come around too often for my kids and I.

Do we need to have a re-poll of the original question?

I believe that Wayne is still hosting his meeting as planned, for those of you who are still in contact with him. Anyone wishing to contact him on this subject can PM him via his daughter 'Diamondsirtalis', who is still a member here.

Well I know with things like this like as in the meetings. It would be nice for all to get together but on another site I am on its easier to have little meetings and different times. So that if people want to go to more then its possible. Little ones around the country will make it easier for those of us that cant go out of country or lots of states over due to money. Each pace obviously would have its planner and and tiime . then that way its a better of a possiblity for more to participate. Then you can choose if you want to go to a gathering in say PA , CA, Europe ...etc. I have been to a few gathering for the other site ( not snake related) and its fun to be able to go outta state but its hard for us to go far because of money. So if this does work out is it possible to make many lil gathering so that if one is close enough to me then I would be willing to go even if it is outta state but like I said I cant go far other then maybe PA as the farthest and I dont wanna miss a gathering to meet the great people here.
If you are confused at what I have said you can contact me and I will explain more if need. Thank you

It does seem as if there would be a lot of barriers to making it happen. Mainly distance.

Stefan-A

As I recall, it didn't happen because of personal conflicts and disagreements over what the purpose of the meeting would be. Distance wasn't an issue for most.

like I was talking about in my post. I would love for this to happen but it would have to probably be different areas at different times so that if people cant travel as far they can go to the ones closer to them and if they wanted to go to more then one it could still happen having them at different times.

Conflicts? You mean before I arrived to stir things up? Over the dang purpose of a meeting? Well I'll be darned. I always knew you were a volatile bunch, easily riled. Heck, many of the times I got everyone all ticked off, I wasn't even trying.:p
