View Full Version : Looking to trade...

((I was told this goes here. :P))
I have 7 brilliant T. sirtalis sirtalis baby garters from last summer. 3 of them are your standard northerns with light to dark brown colouration with red speckling, 2 are a mint green with a bit of red, 1 is entirely green to turquoise, and the last is a light brown with a large amount of red through out his body.
Parents are off in communal brumating about 2 miles from my house, but pics are available.
I'm looking for a breeding pair or two sexed babies from different litters of either checkered garters, red-sided garters, Thamnophis sirtalis infernalis, or plains garters.
Please message me if you are interested in pics of the babies! :D

Hi Kyle. Yes, ads wouldn't normally be posted here, but I think our Classified section is not open to new members until they have posted a few times.

As for the 3 others, I do not have a pic of the mother on hand. However, I will in a few months. :P

welcome to the forum, and I would like to see pics of the babies, after all its like an unoffical manditory thing to put up pics of your snakes......:D:D

Also Kyle, if you're looking to trade, perhaps you should tell us where in the US you are based?:D
Zephyr
12-02-2007, 04:59 PM
I'm in Michigan. Dearborn to be specific. We have, in my opinion, the highest variety of colors in our garters. :D
These pics really don't do the babies any justice.
And if you're wondering why the tank's so scarcely decorated, it's because it's their winter enclosure. ^^
In the summer they get a protected pen outside. :D
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/2294/img0944ci4.jpg
This is one of what I've dubbed "Mint" color. If she wasn't all the way on the other side of the tank it would be a bit clearer. x.x
http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/6545/img0946af1.jpg
High-red in front, normal in back. Bit of the other normal to the left.

I WOULD get up more pics of the other babies, but they're either way out of focus or hiding beneath the water bowl. XD

Mint/red one investigating nightcrawler bits. Color's a bit similar to a pastel isn't it?

Did I mention they're feeding well on rosy reds, goldfish, slugs, red wigglers, earthworms, night crawlers and pinky parts? :D
adamanteus
12-02-2007, 06:10 PM
Just a hint, Kyle.... Red Wrigglers are poisonous for Garter Snakes, and Goldfish contains high levels of Thiaminase which is a cumulative toxin. It would be a very good idea to cut out those two elements of your snake's diet.
Zephyr
12-02-2007, 06:15 PM
Hmm... Halt the wigglers you say?
They never really liked them as much as night crawlers, and I haven't fed goldfish in a half year. They won't be harmed will they? D:
adamanteus
12-02-2007, 06:17 PM
They'll be fine if they don't get any more!:D

Unfortunately my camera had an "oops" right before I let them off to their brumation site.
However, I do have a pic of my 2 1/2 foot male, Cremepuff. :P

Well, he's very handsome. :-) However, with a name like Cremepuff, he's bound to have some issues... LOL!
Zephyr
12-03-2007, 02:37 PM
Well, at first I thought he was a she, but then I found it this wasn't true. XD
So the name stuck.
He's a sweety anyways. :P

Wow! Those are adorable little babies.
Zephyr
12-03-2007, 06:00 PM
Indeed. They're... 6 months old. ^^ At least most of them. It's hard to tell when all your garters keep giving birth in a pen outdoors. x.x
Lori P
12-03-2007, 06:01 PM
Tell us about your pen! How is it made? Better yet, can you send pics??
Zephyr
12-03-2007, 06:06 PM
Well, the old pen from last year looked like this:
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/5871/img0457ar7.jpg
Lost the occasional snake due to escapes, but this was before the grass grew in around the base of the enclosure. This year we have a larger enclosure planned with a small pond in it. :D
BTW, that's not glass. Tis screen. :D
EdgyExoticReptiles
12-03-2007, 06:12 PM
i would put a top on that i mean cats and birds and other predators could easily hurt some of them
Zephyr
12-03-2007, 06:14 PM
We live in an extreme urban area, and I cover them up at night. They seem to do well with direct UV. :D
Lori P
12-03-2007, 06:15 PM
Very cool. I wish I could give my guys a safe outdoor enclosure but the critters here can get into just about anything. I'd need some super duper screening and guard snakes posted all around. LOL
Zephyr
12-03-2007, 06:18 PM
Have you tried predator-repelling plants? Marigolds and moonflowers work wonders. :D
Lori P
12-03-2007, 06:26 PM
The goats would eat them, lol... and I have cats and chickens and turkeys and pigs that would want to eat the snakes... I could come up with a pen within a pen, to keep the bigger critters out maybe!!
Zephyr
12-03-2007, 06:27 PM
Indeed. Or you could sell all your other critters and buy a giant greenhouse for your snakes. XD
Lori P
12-03-2007, 06:31 PM
OMG!!! I KNEW IT!!! You're really my husband in disguise aren't you!!! (He adores the snakes because he doesn't have to build them fences, or barns, or help me move hay or 50 lb bags of feed... he keeps telling me to get one big enough to eat everything else here!!!) Your cover is blown!! LOL

Lots of announcements. :P
Just picking out my faves from the litter. I gotta keep some too. Can be lonely during the winter season.
Which reminds me, during the summer, I'll have pics of my hunting grounds where I've estimated the SNAKE population density to be 1 per every 10 cubic feet! :D

Try naming all the scientific names and then common names of all the garters you know. Then think of all the colour varieties.

Oh yes, tons in the summer. The 1 snake per **10** cubic feet place is 2 miles from my house! :D
anji1971
12-04-2007, 05:15 PM
And where exactly would that be????:D
Zephyr
12-04-2007, 06:58 PM
lol
The Garden Plots at University of Michigan. About 1 square mile of pure snake territory: Browns, Garters, and Rough Greens. :D
You literally can't step with out finding an adult in June, and in July-August there's tons of babies running around. Then in September, the browns give birth, and under everything they're shooting out like worms. :P
I'm not exaggerating.
anji1971

Well..........that's just a hop, skip and a jump over the river from my house! Hmmm.......... just need a snake-sneaker to get 'em back home!;);)

James, did you ever manage to catch another grass snake?
did you keep them or let them go?

I took the male back and let him go. I decided to stick to just Garters now. I will still go and catch native snakes, but I won't bring them home anymore, just have fun and take pictures!:)
Why? You want to come out to play?

K, so lately I've been ENTIRELY APPALLED at my snake's colour changes. Most of the snakes you've seen, save for the two largest which appear to be female and standard colored, have blossomed into INCREDIBLE specimens. We have no AA batteries left, but tomorrow I should be able to get up some pics of these BREATH TAKING SNAKES.
Serpentine99
12-19-2007, 09:59 PM
cant wait to see them
Zephyr
12-20-2007, 02:53 PM
Today, Still no double AA's... BUT, I'm wondering, because their colour is somewhat subdued now, if the vivid colours I saw last night were from their blood pulsing through their bodies, as it was feeding time. Kind of like blushing maybe?
enigma200316
12-20-2007, 07:58 PM
maybe because when they feed they expand a little and that usually brightens the color or makes it more visable.......:)
EdgyExoticReptiles
12-20-2007, 08:43 PM
feed them again before you take them again if it makes pretty colors come back
Zephyr
12-20-2007, 10:22 PM
Then I shall feed them on Saturday. ^^
I was thinking maybe it was sort of like what they think the plates on stegosaurs did: when they changed moods the blood pressure and whatnot would rise in the plates and the blood would cause them to change colours.
