OK... got a beef heart, cut it into bite sized strips while my poor dogs drooled and whined.
Froze the strips.
Thawed some of them.
Placed them on a dish.
Watched ten garters (3 different species) ignore them while they dried to a crackly crunch.
So... those of you who have fed this... do you scent the strips?

I have often used beef heart in the past. I always scent it the first few times, then gradually reduce the scent. Much as you would with rodents etc.

I've never used beef heart, but I've had a lot of success introducing new food items by giving them a lot of their favorite food and just a little bit of the new food item (after washing). I also partially cover the new item with their old, favorite. Then they sometimes take it by mistake the first several times. If they're at all attracted, try adding motion by threading fishing line or sewing thread through it and twitching it. In the picture below, I'm getting some young pickeringii to eat small caribou strips. They don't need the fish smell to entice them anymore, but I still like to give them some variety.
