I live in Northwestern Mississippi and caught this little guy two weeks ago. I'ld like to know his scientific name to do more research on him. Anybody got a clue?

Hi Matthew, and welcome to the forum. There are quite a few people on this forum that are really good at identifying garter, ribbon, and even water snakes, but they'll need to see a picture (and maybe ask you a few questions).

However, our site security protocol won't allow you to post pictures until you've made a few posts. This protocol cuts down on the amount of spam we receive. In the meantime, have a look around, and enjoy your stay.

Rick

P.S. Here's a link to a thread that will show how to post pictures (http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/site-feedback-suggestions-questions/1008-guide-posting-pictures.html).

i'm pretty sure thats an eastern garter snake (Thamnophis Sirtalis Sirtalis), only other thing it could be which i dont think it is(only if people disagree with me) a red-sided that hasnt got its color yet

Totally agree with Reed on this one. Thamnophis sirtalis sirtalis- Easter Garter. You'll find info here under "Care sheets". Check under the species Common Garter.

What a pretty snake! How big is he? Looks really small in that picture!! I love the checker pattern down his sides, my eastern only shows that when she's stuffed full of salmon!!:D
