How about a good morning thread? I know I don't always have time to read everything first thing in the morning but I'd love to pop in and wish everyone a wonderful day. :) Of course our days all start at such different times!!

So here's my good morning wish for everyone to have a GREAT day, and here is a pic to send us off-- this little guy snuck in the front door this morning and just stood there silently, displaying his heart out!! I turned around from the computer to see him. :-)

And no, he is not for Thanksgiving, lol!!!

Talk to you all later!! :)

LOL!!! That is his beard-- but he has flushed his head/neck bright red and his hangy down nose thing (yeah, that's the technical term) is elongated so THAT'S his way of saying he's happy to see me. :-)

humans are so lame
no claws, no tails, no colour changes, no fangs, no wings, no venom, pathetic senses and totally silly display behaviors

Stefan-A
11-15-2007, 07:46 AM
What do we need claws, tails, colour changing, fangs etc. for? Whatever we need, we just make ourselves. That's why we've been so successful, no other species can adapt as quickly as we can.

And our behavior? I'd say it's about as silly as anything any other species might display.

Whatever we need, we just make ourselves.

that's the thing though - we need to make things
I was musing the other day that we do nearly as much hunting and gathering as our ancestors - except we have to earn money in addition, to earn the priviledge allowing us to do so

Rick, it's because he and the others roam free and aren't stuck in a dirty little pen. They do, however, visit our dirty little house... LOL!!!

James, yes, his wattle, but I was using the technical term... LOL!!!! :-)

when i was a little girl we had a male and female for pets.. they layed eggs but we never got any babies out of them.. the male hated me with a passion .. one day my dad made me go in to his pen and collect there old rotten eggs told me if he came to flog me then to hit him up side the head with the stick he gave me.. sure enough he came after me and hit him over the head (i was about 8 mind you) i thought i killed him!1 i fell to my knees crying what have i done.. about that time he woke up and ran to the other side of his pen.. you know i would always go in to his pen from then on and he'd follow me like a puppy dog.. and hed even came in the house like this one did.. it ripped my heart out the day he died.. he died in my arms.. i miss that little bugger..i named him tom tom..:(

Oh, Natalie, my first turkey Hank died in my arms too... snuggled in my lap, laid his head over my arm and passed. He was the coolest, would follow me everywhere too. They sure do have amazing personalities and they really do get to you!!! :-)

I know what you mean. Mikhaila wants a silky chicken.

Lori P

These turkeys actually came from the pound, lol!! They showed up at someone's house as little babies and they brought them to the pound... turns out they are Royal Palm turkeys (the one in the pic yesterday is just solid white, the others have the black markings). I am hoping to have babies in the spring, but like Natalie said, turkeys are often poor breeders and worse mothers if the eggs do hatch. We'll see. They are not a meat breed, but of course can be eaten, they just don't get that heavy breast.

Rhea, I was looking for a pic of the silkies we had a couple of years ago for Mikhaila but can't find one right now. They're so cute!!!

Here are my good morning pics for today... my co-worker Kerry brought her sister's pet squirrel to the office yesterday... omg, we had SUCH a fun time with him!!!! They found him as a tiny baby and raised him. He is SUCH a character!!! He is so amazing, he comes when you call him, he even scratches at the door to go out-- I never knew squirrels were so personable and certainly never knew they would cling to you like he does. They leave him loose in the house most of the time, and he even sleeps with them (he nests into the covers). Too darn cute!!!!

Are silkie chickens those ones that look like feather dusters, all floppy and fluffy??
Someone down the street from where I grew up used to have two of them in their yard, and they were the cutest looking things!

I used to have a MEAT IS DEAD bumpersticker (when I had a car) and for some odd reason people used to ask me whether I was a vegetarian
generally I'd point out to them that, for the most part, this is true for carnivores as well
on one of my more gritty days, I did once reply
"no - I like mine that way"
nothing like raising people's consciousness a little . . .

What is true for most carnivores?
that meat is dead
very few carnivorous humans eat their meat while it's alive
in fact a friend of mine proposed that all the meat in the markets should be labeled "pre-killed"

Good morning to bay area...Good afternoon to Stefan!

What does pre-killed mean

It means its killed before it gets eaten. Its a term quite often used with mouse eating snakes. If you're going to feed them, you can take a live mouse, bash his head against a wall and then feed it to your snake. Thats pre-killed :)

It was a joke. Point was, you might as well call it killed instead of pre-killed. :)

Good MONDAY you guys--- ugh!!! LOL It sure feels like a Monday. Having a hard time getting motivated.

Do you guys remember I decided I wanted to raise my own guppies for the garters? Well, I have realized the downfall to that idea. They take FOREVER to grow. LOL I guess it takes a while to get the right mix of adults and babies... right now I have a dozen weee little guppies and none of feeding size. Grow, babies, grow!!!

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!! :):)

cooked vegetables are pre-killed too, I think?
And eating them is called "predation". :)

drache
11-19-2007, 09:19 AM
I think veggies are easier to kill
they don't struggle, they don't run, many don't even hide, they generally don't display much fear
there's really not that much predation involved as far as I can tell
except perhaps in the case of certain funghi

oh wait
I just realized
one wouldn't generally prey upon carrots
however - one might prey upon one's neighbour's carrots

Stefan-A
11-19-2007, 09:27 AM

Rick

LOL Rick!!! Believe me, if I'm going to the zoo with a great big coat it's to make a deposit, not a withdrawal!!

No, Emma came here like all the others... started with a phone call from someone who had found her lying in the middle of the road, terribly torn up by dogs. They gathered her into their horse trailer and I told them to bring her on, we'd treat her while her owner was located... but they never were. Emus got big here for a while, until, like everything else, the novelty wore off. She probably jumped their fence and then got attacked by the dogs.

After she was healed (you couldn't find a vet then who knew about emus; the advice was, well, treat her like she's a huge chicken and adjust meds accordingly, lol) I tried to place her with other emus. But as it turns out, no-one was looking for female emus; everyone wanted males, because while the females lay the eggs, it's the males who brood them and raise the young. I guess there was an abundance of females at the time. So she just ended up staying, and what a hoot she is... turns out they are very protective of their area, so she stalks the whole pasture every day and protects it. She chases the neighbor's cars and between her and the donkeys, they keep any straying dogs and annoying kids out of the pasture (there was a hunting dog who got in the pasture last week, and she and the donks bore down on it so fast... luckily he got out or I'd have been scraping beagle off the pasture for a week!!!). She accepts our dogs, and even plays with them, so she certainly knows the difference which is interesting.

She also comes out of the pasture when I let the horses out and she just hangs out. She lets me touch her, but no-one else. She's really a cool girl. She makes the neatest drumming sound deep in her chest when she's mad or protective.

Here she is hanging out by the front yard.

She is a funny looking critter, I'll admit! She's fun tho; she looooooves a shower with the water hose and begs for it every morning. She gets in a mood sometimes and races the pasture, head bobbing and twisting every which way, kicking and leaping, just having a ball. I need to get that on video one day.

I've always hoped I'd find her eggs but never have. I suspect she lays them in the woods and the piggies or some wild critter gets them. But how cool it would be to find a huge green egg!
