I've completely lost count of how many books I'm actually reading at the moment. My guess is around 10. Here are some of the books I've been reading lately:
Richard Dawkins, 2009. The Greatest Show On Earth: The Evidence For Evolution. Free Press (ISBN 978-1-4165-9478-9)
Eugène Bruins, 1999. The Complete Encyclopedia Of Terrariums. Rebo International b.v. Lisse (ISBN 978-90-366-1593-8)
Stephen J. Mullin & Richard A. Seigel, 2009. Snakes: Ecology and Conservation. Cornell University Press (ISBN 978-0-8014-4565-1)
C. Kenneth Dodd, jr., 2010. Amphibian Ecology and Conservation. Oxford University Press (ISBN 978-0-19-954119-5)

Encyclopedia of terrariums??
Oooohhh sounds so appealing!! :D
It's 300 pages worth of the absolute basics on just about everything. Accommodation, feeding, keeping (insects, spiders, myriapods, reptiles and amphibians). It's filled with small translation errors and other mistakes. It's good if you want to learn a little about everything, but not if you want to know everything about anything.
Another book I've read relatively recently, is:
Philippe de Vosjoli, 2004. The Art Of Keeping Snakes. BowTie Press (978-1882770632)

It's documentary. Written by the guy behind the Stanford prison experiment.

The book was inspired by what happened at Abu Ghraib and deals with what can drive a normal person to behave that way. I haven't read much of it, yet.

I've just started the third book in the "Dhampir" series by Barb & J.C. Hendee. First one is "Dhampir", second is "Thief of Lives" third is "Sister of the Dead". So far its a good romp. These books would appeal to anyone who likes gothic, fantasy or playing D & D. Whoops! I guess I just stepped out of the nerd closet into the spotlight! Oh well! I can deal.

Last week I was at our local library. I took my wish list with me and approached the guy working at the Reference desk. I gave him my list and asked him to order these through the inter-library loaner program. He looked each one up and told me it would do no good to order them as the colleges NEVER loan out text materials, especially to a public library. I proceeded to tell him my philosophy to life "If you don't make any calls, you don't make any sales". I explained to him the fact that not ordering them meant the answer was no when there is a chance it could be yes. He laughed and said it was a waste of time.
Today I got a call from the library. All three books were in. I feel like I hit the lottery.

Well I tend to read quite a bit but the book I just finished is quite possibly one of the best Ive ever read. It is a true story and to quote someone else "The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his remarkable humanitarian campaign in the Taliban's backyard" (I am sure some of you are already familiar with this story)
The book is titled "Three Cups of Tea"
Written by Greg Mortenson (guy who the story is about)
and David Oliver Relin
In my opinion this book is a must read! Whenever I think about this book a smile comes to my face to know that one can can do so much.
This book is meant to raise awareness and money for the problems in less developed countries than our own. Please read.
Thank You!

Re-reading The Hobbit. I've not read it since I was 8 or 9. I'm trying to work out how they plan to spin out the story for more than one film.

When my attention span comes back, I'm going to finish Lolita and start on one of the books my mom gave/bought me. She really wants me to read Alice in wonderland. So, I might just do that.

That's a controversial one even to this day. I hate reading non-fiction, but I did see the movie. Both versions. 1962 and 1997. Lolita (1962) - IMDb (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0056193/)

I'm currently reading The Lord of the rings the fellowship of the ring.I bought Life on earth by David Attenborough and Amazon The flooded forest by Micheal Goulding and will get around to reading them.I also want to read The hobbit before the film comes out so I know what the story's meant to be like.I read it when i was about 8 and it was in one ear and out the other(I was a thick child). Also I've sent a letter to Santa telling him I want The Garter snakes evolution and ecology:)

I've seen the 1997 one. It kind of sucks, because I used to want to name a daughter, if I had kids, Lolita. Even before I knew the book.

Wuthering Heights (and any Bronte books are hard going, I've never managed to get through one) but not as depressing as Thomas Hardy.
The first two Hunger Games are worth a read, if you get to the games and still find it boring give up. The third book looses something, but the story had to be concluded and hats off to her for sticking to a trilogy rather than doing a Rowling and churning out more books of ever increasing length and decreasing originality.
A book of similar ilk to Hunger Games that I read recently was called "The Maze Runner", I think it's a cleverer story. Char got an uncorrected proof, so I don't know if it was published in the US.

Chris I've heard two different rumors of late. The first has something to do with some unfinished writings Tolkien had which Peter Jackson will use as a source to make a third film that will bridge the gap between the two series. The second is the movie studios being such pimps to get every last bit of money they can from our wallets the Hobbit will be two films and the unfinished material will be a new trilogy to bridge the gap between the two series.
So in short... Hobbit is two films, unfinished writing/notes is third film..... trilogy. OR, Hobbit is two films, unfinished work is separate new trilogy to bridge gap. Whatever the unfinished material ends up being it will surely be used with great liberties taken by whatever writers fill in the blanks. Jackson got all this going by remarks he made at Comic-Con. Something to the effect of there still being a lot of story left to tell, and it won't fit in just two more films. I'm such a fan of the first three films that as long as Jackson stays on board from start to finish for one cohesive feel throughout I'm all for as much Middle Earth as Jackson can toss at us.

I'd heard it was going to be three films, I'd not heard about the additional material. I've nearly got to the end of my re-read of The Hobbit now, and I can see it could be spun to two films, certainly not three. I don't hold much hope with the additional material - Tolkien left a lot of scribbled notes, some of which have been tidied by his son, but if you've read The Silmarilion you realise that there isn't a coherent story to bridge the gap. Jackson's LotR writing team was great, but they were working from a good story.

I have an e-reader on my phone but I just like good old fashioned books. Must have my books bound...and prefer them hardbound as a matter of fact. Another book I keep trying to read is The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But I saw the beginning of the movie and it was so flippin tedious...I turned it off. Now I can't read the book.

Keep trying. The first 50 pages or so are hard to get thru but then it really starts to reel you in. I found the swedish names hard to keep "reading". Book is better than movie only because they can't fit in everything that is going on with the characters in the movie. I have read and seen all 3.

Heavy is how I like my reading.
Me too. Especially when they put the subject matter into a video documentary so I don't have to read it. :D
Seriously, it's the mechanics of reading that I have a problem with. For me it's a very inefficient and cumbersome way to get "new software". It's good to have books for reference though.
If I can't quite remember if Jack indeed jumped over a candlestick, I can always check my books.:p

Reading exercises the brain. It makes you use your own imagination in the development of the story, instead of you watching someone elses version. I enjoy reading for that benefit alone. There is nothing like the story enhanced by your own imagination based upon the writer's words.
Video can enhance the story, however nothing beats what you imagine as you read the story. Thus the implementation of new "software" is also a new development/improvement of the hardware system. :)

I just got "The private life of Adders" Northern by Rodger McPhail. I've not read it all, but my first flick through the 127 pages has told me it's been a good buy. There are some fabulous photos of Vipera berus in the wild, mostly in Northern England. Text - wise it's not a heavy scientific read, it's drawn from the knowledge and observations of someone who has observed adders for several decades, but he does also draw draw from literature where relevant.
A thoroughly recommended book, and one I'm happy to have added to my library of herpetological books.

"Men at Arms" is a better Discworld novel than "Small Gods".
You reminded me that I'd seen this recently:
http://www.lspace.org/books/reading-order-guides/the-discworld-reading-order-guide-1-5.pdf
It's missing the latest few, but it's generally a good illustration of the different Discworld story threads and how they relate.
On my reading list for later in the year is Raising Steam:

I've also just finished reading "Along came a spider" by James Patterson, the book is quite different to the film (with Morgan Freeman playing the lead) but both book and film were enjoyable.
