ive had a lot of these they usually look ruffled or have black scales mixed in, make sure yourse are healthy and i wouldnt put them in with the garters a lot of mine died/ had parisites(probaly because a lot of them are wild caught because they are so common) but besides that they were great. i thought of them a lot like green ribbons

I agree that you shouldn't mix them, and quarintine for atleast a month if you do end up putting them together......your lucky they are protected in PA as well as the smooth green.........:)

If that were my aestivus I would use a substrate that would retain more humidity and stock the tank densley with live and fake foliage, they are very nervous snakes that stress out easily. most specimens dont last very long in captivity

Brandon, I keep soom Rough Green snakes too. I house mine in a 20 tall enclosure with limbs going to the top. They really love to climb.

im kinda leaving mine alone right this min,,dont want to upset him,,i put a hide away house in there with limbs and fake greens,,,i have a dirt bottom for him and about 15 crickets in there,,,he dont seem to be eating yet but thats probably due to him being scared

Brandon, cool snake. I've been thinking about getting a pair someday- they seem like cool display animals. If you really want to put it with your garters, I would suggest to quarantine more like 3 months, just to play it safe, in case it has parasite problems or anything. Plus, it will give the snake more time to acclimate(as it is probably wild caught) before the added stress of being around other snakes. I personally try not to keep different species together too much, other than community tanks that house lizards from the same habitat and same part of the world- but that doesnt mean it cant be done.
If you kept back issues to Reptiles Magazine. there is a 4 page article on them in the july 2006 issue.

Also, be careful about leaving crickets in there for too long if he doesnt eat them. Crickets are constantly hungry/thirsty, and can attack them, going for the moisture of the eyes and continuing on into the rest of him from there. I have a few animals that take alittle while to eat their crickets, so for them, I like to throw a chuck of carrot in the darker corner of the cage to give the crickets food and moisture.
I also learned that crickets, when left in a cage for very long, will eat the feces of the snake/lizard, which can really cause parasite problems if the reptile eats the crickets after this.

Well I did not know that one. My green snake is in the big tank with the rest of the snakes, so 3 garters and 1 green snake... bunch of crickets. I'll put some wet bread in there too. There are baby crickets all over the place now. I guess they have babies (lol). Well I've not noticed any health problems, and if I do, they'll go right to the vet. These snakes were only about $20 each, but they're my favorites out of all the snakes I have. They're so pretty :). My medium sized garter just ate about 8 minnows and 3 pinkies. Ain't that a little much? He's kind of a bully and won't let the other snakes get near the food. I try to seperate and feed them, but the others dont seem to like that. Any ideas?

I used to have that issue when I kept my sierrra, mountain, and valley garter together. the sierra and mountain were super agressive eaters, and the valley was more timid. I finally just gave them each their own cage, especially since the mountain garter (t.e. elegans, very aggresive feeder) was catching up in size to the valley.
As far as your situation, I would remove the aggresive one at feeding time, then wait a few minutes for the rest of the snakes to settle back down from the commotion, then feed them. The aggresive feeders will often eat in another container without problem.

yeah good idea,,,ill seperate the mean one from the others,,,feed him seperately,,the other two will eat together and side by side without fighting,,,but that mean one,,,man,,lol,,if i still my hand near him he will nip at me,,,only when foods around though,,no other time

My sierra (t. couchii) garter thinks everything is food. Takes alittle work getting him out of the cage without getting bit- not that its that big of deal, but I've just never cared for getting bit. Once he's out, he's fine though.
In a thread where I showed a pic of him, Rich said he looked like a mamba- thats funny because I think he thinks he is a mamba.
