The parents of mine came from Alaska, so hey, that's getting closer to you... :-)

Actually, Lori, you're probably closer to me than Alaska! :p
I have found a person who sells maritime garters and smooth green snakes over in Nova Scotia, so it's a start. But if I could manage it I'd like a Puget for Kieran's 13th birthday next summer. That gives me some time.........:)

Ooooh I love those smooth green snakes!! They're so brilliantly colored. Not to worry, I'm sure you'll find a Puget before next summer. :-)

Anji, can you bring them in from the U.S.?
There are always shows in grand rapids and taylor, Michigan.
Mail is expensive and tricky, but an option.

The shows are an option, and I've already started "reminding" my brother-in-law, who frequently crosses the border, that I'll need him to take me to the Taylor show in the spring. I'm not sure yet how many garters they have there, but we'll see.........:)

I need a huge favor from someone. I am interested in these snakes but for some reason no one ever gets my messages when I contact them through kingsnake.
I was wondering if someone could cut and paste this message to the person who posted on KS.
Mr. Janovetz,
I saw your add on KS about the three T.s.pickeringi. I am interested in these snakes. I sent you a message through KS but I don't know if it will go through. For some reason whenever I try to contact someone through KS they never get my messages. Someone on Thamnophis.com was kind enough to forward this message to you in my behalf. My email address is sschind@peoplepc.com. If the snakes are still available I would appreciate it if you would contact me. Thank you. Steve Schindler
If you are interested in the snakes then I guess you won't be helping me out and I understand but if you are not I would appreciate it if you could forward the message for me.
Thanks
Steve
I can tell you about how many garters they will have at the Taylor show, very few. I only went a couple of times, but I wasn't impressed. Plus we have two monthly reptile shows closer to me. They are starting to get more into garters but it still isn't a lot of them. They have surprised me once or twice though. One man was selling pugets during the early part of this summer, I bought a gravid female from him. She only gave me one baby though and its a aqua color. I need a male by spring but I can't afford all 3 right now. Could just order from Scott, he is only asking $40 for his, but I'm betting he is only selling babies. By the way, does that aqua color change to blue when they get older?
Want to bet the poor guy gets buried under emails forwarded by all of us from Steve? :D

Tori, I assume you mean Scott Felzer, is he in Michigan? I know I read somewhere that he grew up there. If he isn't too far out then I'll just contact him in the spring and go pick up the snakes right there. I know I can get someone to bring me over. That would save me lots of trouble. I don't want to even attempt to ship from the US, our customs usually hold things for weeks at the border, they'd probably die on me.

I have a pair of babies coming from Rob and Amy Zerkle along with a pair of T.e. vagrans but for this price I figured I would take a chance and see if he still has them. I'll let everyone know if I hear from the guy so you can all stop bombarding him with e-mails.
One of the vagrans I am getting from Rob and Amy is a worm and fish eater. This will be my first experience with garters that don't eat mice (other than babies of course) I see someone else here mentioned silver sides. I am assuming these are OK, I get them in for some of my customers for their bigger fish. Also are smelt OK, I'm looking for the list of OK fish but I can't seem to find it.
Thanks
Steve

This is the list of safe fish we have, Steve.

I guess it's only partial.

I was looking at the bait store this morning and they have big, silvery minnows... like the smallest were twice the size of the rosy reds, and most were much bigger. Are these still safe you think?? I only ask because something I read a while ago advised against bait store minnows but I can't find it now to read why...
Actually, Scott lives in NC now, has for a while. I moved to Michigan from NC. Oh, and I sent forwarded that on for you Steve...like Rhea did. I'ld be curious to know exactly how many emails that guy ended up with....

Thanks James, that was the list i was looking for. On page 65 it says smelt are OK but in 64 it says they are not. Upon further review I see two different species. My guess is its the freshwater smelt and not the pond smelt that people catch by the tons around the Great Lakes. Oh well, I'll keep looking I guess.
One thing that caught my attention. I thought that rosie reds were just a color variation of the fathead minnow. If that's the case they are listed as containing thiaminase. It seems that lots of people on here use rosies.

I knew that rosies have some thiaminase
I always thought it was less than in goldfish
but I've also tried to get my snakes switched asap
I like it better when my shop gets the brown minnows
is this just my assumption, or is there any truth th the idea that the red/orange colouring is related somehow to the thiaminase?
