I am confused:confused: Since I won the caption contest last month, am I allowed to enter in this month? according to rule#4, or is it only the one that makes up the theme???

& when does the grand prize get shipped out? LOL!

The exclusion rule only applies to the photo contest....so that the winner cannot choose a theme which he or she knows they have a good chance of winning. So avoiding the chance of an unfair advantage. Please feel free to enter the caption contest as may times as you wish.
I will personally be delivering your 'Grand Prize'...... eventually.:D

LOL-- Anji-- here's what it is-- Reed talked me into getting his ribbon snake. (He REALLY had to twist my arm, too.... believe it???? :D) But the ribbon snake did not have a name-- so I have named him Reed!!!! :D

And THEN he talked me into getting the ribbon snake's companion, who he had already named Curious-- too cute. :-)

I ve got so many tongue shots but all are so blurry ( only the tongues that are flickering too fast for my camera):o
I think I need an extra light for a photo that is worth to be entered in this contest.

I dont know if you can manually change the settings of your camera, but a higher shutterspeed (1/320) and a bigger diafragma (like f3.2) should do the trick. Using a flash with this settings will defenitly produce some sharp pictures, sadly the flash also 'ruins' the colors of the snakes

What kind of garter is that. that you just posted?? With the blue on top and yellow on bottom?? He is GORGEOUS!!!!

So, James.. How much editing is allowed in the caption contest? ;)

I can't see a problem with editing..... didn't we all discuss this once? What was the outcome?

Stefan-A
11-16-2007, 11:33 AM
We did have a discussion about editing, in connection with the August contest:

I have spoken to Jason about changes to the caption contest. He wants to keep it as it is for the time being. Sorry guys.

adamanteus
11-16-2007, 02:45 PM
That's right, but wasn't Jason's comment about 'keeping things the same' when we asked about including photos not in the photo contest? I guess I'll have to read back through that thread.

zooplan
11-16-2007, 10:30 PM
I´m sure to that point, James, but know nothing about a discussion about the scale of editing that is eligible.
That must have been more in the past.
My oppinion is, ther should be no more rule than that the original picture must still have to be cognisable.

BTW: How many editing is allowed in the photo contest?;)
and:
Althought its a fact you may ad to the conditions of the photo contest, that each participant gives his permission to use his picture in the caption contest.

Stefan-A

Well, I never intended to include pictures not participating in the contest, when I made the suggestion that we should be able to allow editing beyond simple captions, but I know I wasn't very specific about that.

Also, I'd like some clarification regarding what is meant with "relevant to pictures posted in" the photo contest. Do they have to be based on the ones in the photo contest, or is it enough that they just follow the same theme?

zooplan

First it was clear to me that captions must be based on the photos in the contest, but last month winner caption was not like that.
After studying the meaning of "relevant" I´m quite sure again. Otherwise it should be written: "relevant to the theme of the photo contest".

adamanteus
11-17-2007, 03:26 AM
I can see there is some confusion as to exactly what is and isn't eligible. As I don't single handedly make the rules, we will have to ask Jason for clarification on this. To me, as long as every one is having fun with it, and no one is complaining about captions that are posted, it's fine to use a little imagination when making a caption contest entry.

Cazador
11-17-2007, 08:57 PM
May I suggest that the rules were created based on a group concensus, and they'll continue to evolve as the wishes of "the group" change. Any time any member wishes for a rule change, they should simply make a proposal and ask for opinions. It can be done with a poll or simply by starting a new thread (or by discussing it in the contest "comments" threads, like this).

Unless the majority feels otherwise, I suggest that only captions made on pictures that were in the photo contest should be eligible to win the caption contest. I don't see any problem with people submitting additional pictures/captions, but I suggest that they shouldn't be eligible to win our grand prizes .

Personally, I think people should be able to do as much "photoshop" work on pictures as they'd like for the caption contest... as long as they wouldn't be considered offensive to our younger members.

What are your thoughts on:

1) only making captions for pictures in the monthly photo contest, and

2) how much photoshop work should be allowed?

As always, majority rules.
Rick

zooplan
11-19-2007, 12:14 AM
I would prefere to change the rule to: "relevant to the theme of the photo contest", that would make it possible to use a second choice photo like this for the caption.
http://www.zooplan.net/images/amel1.jpg

photoshop work should be allowed as much as the original photo is still cognisable.

Cazador
11-19-2007, 12:18 PM
Udo,

I'll start an anonymous poll, so we can vote on it.

In the past, I have entered, and won the caption contest, with photos that were NOT part of the regular photo contest. Twice, I think.

My entry this time was not in the regular photo contest, and was not taken by myself either.

I thought the fun of this contest was to see what funny captions people could come up with, and I don't like limiting the source of photos at all.

However, I do like the photos to be pictures of Thamnophis species.

Just my $.02
