here are some pics of my latest additions ;)

The first one is a female elegans terrestris that Gijs & Sabine picked out for me... it already has a nice coloration, so this will become a beauty, I'm sure of it:cool:.

And she is a VERY good eater... she is currently housed together with another garter, and she ate the complete meal I gave them. This is the proof:eek:

Then we have this nice couple atratus atratus. The female has an orange line and the male a yellow line. I love them, they are always visible and never retreat in their hides:)

I already had some marcianus, but now I can have 2 different bloodlines :)

The first is a normal wildcolored male.

And this is unfortunately the only pic of the heterozygote albino female.

Next is my couple hammondii, unfortunately brother and sister, but maybe I can change that next year and have some other bloodlines... we'll have to see

Those are really the most secretive garter I've had till now. I enjoy every second they pop out.

They also eat like a pig, as you can see.

And after walking to Gijs & Sabine's table at snake day, I couldn't resist this little fella. He also has some great color on him. So another male elegans terrestris.

You can't see the difference, it's only geneticly. It has the albino gene, but that is surpressed by the normal colored gene. I also have a male albino and breeding him to the female heterozygote will give me albino and heterozygote newborns.

Maybe reading this can clarify things:

ahhh just had a light bulb go on lol the female is het for albinoism. so if you freed it to a normal male and have an albino baby, then you breed the baby with the mum it makes another baby eiter albino or 66%het for????

Thanks.

I can't really follow what you're saying, but here we go with an explanation:D

I have a normal wildcolored animal: CC ( big C = wildcolor gene and is dominant)
I have a heterozygote albino animal: cC (big C same as above and small c is the albino gene )
I have an albino: cc

I breed albino x wilcolored:
I get all cC combinations, nothing else is possible if you draw a matrix. ( this is the first example in the matrix)

I breed albino x heterozygote:
I get all albino or heteryzygote animals.
X c c
c cc cc
C cC cC

I breed heterozygote x heterozygote (also in the article):
As you see, you get a mix of albino and normal colored animals. Of these normal colored animals, some are heterozygote but not all. And you don't know which are. But there are 2 chances out of 3 that it is heteryzygote (2/3 = 66%). So there is a 66% possibility on a heterozygote animal.

Hope that this clarifies it a bit more.:)
X c C
c cc cC
C cC CC

Nice & thanks for sharing. Your T. atratus atratus (Santa Cruz Garter) are as nice as the ones we found this year in San Mateo County. I didn't bag it, looking back I wish I did.

Great new additions, Hans....and great photos too. I particularly like the hammondii, they're top of my list for next year......so I'll be 'picking your brains' for guidance/tips.:D

At this moment, I can tell you they are gorgeous, but really shy. They eat anything, pinkies to fish. They are mostly on the ground, altough I'll still need to give them some bigger space, more branches and more hiding spots and see how they evolve then. But feel free to ask away at that time;)

Thanks Hans. That's a species we don't hear much about on the forum..... I hope you'll keep us updated with info and plenty of photos.

Beautiful pics and snakes, Hans.

And my experiences with hammondii are the smae as those of Hans. Quite shy but excellent feeders.
