My little girl is growing up!!! She's about 20 inches long and 1/2 inch thick, and I am keeping her in a terrarium that is 12by 12 inches square, and 18 " high. I wonder if she needs bigger?? She still has room to stretch out but she hasn't shed in a while, and I wonder if maybe she's not able to grow enough in this house. Any suggestions??

I don't have room for a 20 gallon, but I have an empty 10 gallon, so I guess I'll put her in there for now.
Thanks guys!!!

see you telling about the gallons of your tanks is still confusing to me because in Germany everybody tells the length of his enclosures first.
Inge brought me a tape measure to handle with inch but those gallons are to much for me:(
Iīve calculated the volume of all my encosures in Liter and gallons but canīt remember the next day:o

a 10 gallon really isn't bigger than what you already have her in, if any thing it maybe is a little longer....it should be fine for right now, but you should look into getting the 20 gallon as soon as you can..........:)

a 10G tank is 12" long, so it's actually less space
if you laid your tank on its side, you'd end up with one-and-a-half times the floorspace
I just did that with a tank that was taller than deep (a 29G)
the trick is figuring out how to then close the tank (I'm using a hinged screen top) and how to heat/light it (still tweaking that)
this maneuver can tide you over for a while

btw - here's a link to a great tank sizes conversion chart

Standard Tank Sizes (http://www.anapsid.org/resources/tanksize.html)

Well, they said it was a 10 gallon when I bought it, but it's 20" long, and 10" wide- so it's nearly twice the size of the one she's in now! I'm getting a little confused by all this myself!!!:confused:

Anji, a 10 gallon is 20 x 10 x 12 high. A 20 is 30 x 12 x 12 high.

Thanks Lori, and rhea for clearing that up for me!!
At any rate Deejay's stuck with no bigger than the 10G for now. Hopefully by spring I'll be able to afford a 20G and a bigger table to put it on!!!!!

when I started on keeping garters I had some wooden enclosures, built by using old cupbords. They worked very well and were quite cheap as well.
Itīs only a little bit tricky to make them escape proof.

Udo, that sounds like something I could do!! You don't happen to have any old pictures or anything do you?
Did you just frame the front of the cupboards and put glass doors? I can ALWAYS find old cupboards, and I'd be interested in trying it out!:)

hi Anji,
if you look to Gartersnake.de (http://www.gartersnake.de) you can see what is needed.
Daniels enclosures are no old cupbords but special built.
You need a Frame for airing (iīve used perforated metal plates)
at the front bottom and slidedoors above it.

Thanks for the link, lots of info there, not just about enclosures! I think I'm going to keep researching on building one myself- could turn into a fun winter project, i actually have a couple of shelving units I no longer use, they just might work!!:)

That terrarium sounds a little small to me, Anji. Maybe it's time to upsize!

oh, just as an add-on note: The new tank has a big climbing branch in it, where before she just had a little vine stuck to the side of the terrarium. I swear you could see her little eyes light up when she found that branch!!!! She's been hanging out on it ever since, wonder if she'll ever come down again! :):)

Thought that rather than start a new thread, I'd just tack on to this one...........

Today on my way home from work, I stopped in at the little pet shop I use as my "back-up cricket place". I usually buy crickets for Toadie at a store WAY across town, mainly because their crickets are cheap, and their "dozen" can range from 20-40 crickets!! But when I get really stuck for time, as I am lately, I stop at this little hole-in-the-wall store, where they're still not too badly priced.
Anyway, today, after not being in there for quite some time, I noticed a little corner in the back where the guy sells used tanks!! Found a whole stack of good sized (look like 20G) tanks with lids and accessories included- and he only wants $40.00 for each!!
So, it looks like Deejay will be moving again, as soon as I get someone to help me get it home- prob'ly later this afternoon!! YAY!!:):)
