Itīs supprising to me every year again how small baby garters can be.
Even when I think those born last year are still quite small in comparrison to the breeders.

I see you use the same housing solution as I do. :) I have one of those and a homemade 22 litre glass terrarium. Just got two Geo Flat cages to replace both. Reduces the climbing opportunities a little, but not much. Anyway, it'll give the snakes a surface area 30% bigger than what the 21l Geo Maxi does.

Ok, well she didn't escape. ;--D

Here's a couple of new pics (taken with my new phone, pretty good quality already, huh? ;)). She's about 60cm long now, and she might get a husband in September. ;o) (No, I wont put them together immediatly, she's still too little for breeding, I know.)

Ok so now she's about 80cm long and she weights 110 grams :D I'm getting a male radix in September, do I dare to put it into same terrarium immediatly (well, after quarantine) now when I know there's no parasites in my reptiles or is the female too small for getting babies?

I wouldn't put them together. At 80cm, the female is big enough alright, but the male may just be a little on the small side.

Anthon
08-24-2008, 01:45 PM
Are you sure, because the male I'll get is -07 too? :)

Stefan-A
08-24-2008, 01:48 PM
Okay, then it shouldn't be a problem. :D

Anthon
08-24-2008, 01:53 PM
yay :) by the way when the parents are 100% het axanthic and 100% het red albino then what would the babies be? Possible hets but how and what per cent?

Anthon
09-10-2008, 11:34 AM
Ok so all of them would be 25% poss.het. red albino, 25% poss. het axanthic?

I still have a question about housing them together. So i's ok to put them together afer a quarantine? Even though it's still an evening? Do their biological clocks know i's not the breeding time yet (even though they didn't hibernate last winter) - so my female won't get gravid and when it's time to hibernate, she would be having babies in her stomach and I wouldn't know that?

And oh. I've heard that at least with most of the banded/florida water snakes (nerodia fasciata ssp.) they often breed succesfully when their lights and warms are off for the winter, without cooling period you know. Would this work with (plains) garters, too?

Stefan-A
09-10-2008, 11:46 AM
I won't comment on genetics questions. :D

It should be okay to introduce them after the quarantine period. If you want be sure about them not breeding until it's "breeding time", don't introduce them until it is. :) Keep them separated until the brumation is over.

According to what I've read, it can work. There's an article (by Johanna Raulio) in an old Herpetomania, in which it is mentioned that in addition to turning off the lights and shutting off the heat, you should also cover the front of the enclosure with a blanket or something similar. You can get a copy of the article from the library of The Herpetological Society of Finland.

Anthon
09-10-2008, 12:48 PM
OK :D

By the way how long should the quarantine be, or is it even necessary, when the snake is coming from Thmnophis-Zucht so I'm 99,9% sure there's no problems?

Stefan-A
09-10-2008, 12:55 PM
I'd recommend it, just in case. I wouldn't want to speculate on how long is long enough, you might want to search the forum.

No.

That's quite true :D But here is still just a handful of garter guys compared to, for example, corn snakes.

And this year here was one hatch (he sold the mother?), and they were radix, right? Or at least the mom was radix, didn't see any pics of the dad and he didn't say the species in his advertisement. =P

I talked to him when he was selling them. For a while there, I considered buying one. I talked to him about the species he had, asked him to post a picture and I identified the mother as a radix for him when he did.

That's the problem here, nobody knows what the hell they have. Every garter snake is just known as "garter snake" and those that try to give a scientific name always use "Thamnophis sirtalis", because that was for a long time the only scientific name you'd find on Finnish garter sites. That's the equivalent of calling every species within Pantherophis "corn snake, Pantherophis guttatus".

By the way, a friend of mine has just bought a pair of albino marcianus, so maybe we're getting those beauties within a few years :)

Stefan-A
09-11-2008, 06:15 AM
Freya? :) Too bad they're albino, I could consider getting normal ones. But I guess the public wants the most unnatural-looking morphs that can be produced.

Anthon
09-11-2008, 06:22 AM
Yes :) Well, actually I'm not sure which of them she'll try to breed, because she also bought a normal one. Click (http://irc-galleria.net/view.php?nick=Beltane&image_id=89303787)

Stefan-A

That's nice to hear. :) Now we just have to wait until she sells the normal one. ;)

Anthon
09-17-2008, 08:05 AM
Well, I got my guy on monday and he ate immediatly. :) So because of that, he's probably not very stressed, and because he's a captive-bred individual from reliable breeder, I decided to put them together today. Hope you don't kill me. :) But if there appears any problems (which I doubt), I'll separate them of course.

He's the smaller worm behind.

He has some nice reddish spots, is it because he's het red albino?

(69th posting. :p)

Stefan-A
09-17-2008, 09:52 AM
Looks nice. :)

It's a bit hard to see the size difference because of the perspective, but he does look small by comparison.

Anthon
09-17-2008, 10:13 AM
Yep he's quite small (but I don't think he's too small) compared to the female even though their age difference is only a one day. ;) But I guess it's only because he's a male. I can take some better comparison-pictures later.

Stefan-A
09-17-2008, 10:22 AM
Is the size difference more noticable than this?

http://koti.mbnet.fi/thamnoph/photos/snakesies08/sizeoldies1.jpg

To be fair, though, the female was a year younger and the male was pretty big (for a male). The female has grown at least 10cm since then as well.

Anthon
09-17-2008, 10:24 AM
Nope, it's mostly like in that pic. You know, skinnier than the female, but not much shorter. And umm.. his head is smaller? :D

Stefan-A
09-17-2008, 10:28 AM
That head size thing didn't apply to my parietalis male, his head was just as big as the female's despite the difference in body size, but I can see that it does apply to my vagrans male. :D

Anthon
09-17-2008, 10:30 AM
But your vagrans male is a year younger than the females, isn't he? :D

Stefan-A
09-17-2008, 10:32 AM
Yeah, but I'm talking about the relative size. :) When the female were as long as the male is now, their heads were bigger. I think. It could also just be that the eyes are closer to the snout on the male, making its head look smaller.

Anthon
09-18-2008, 08:36 AM
How awful picture, but I wanted to take it as fast as possible - they don't mind being in a little plastix box. ;) But anyway, here you can see the difference.

They aren't sick (and not even in shed) even though they look like that in this pic, it's just because of flash and dirtiness of the faunabox. :D

Hello,

I just noticed that the male is probably courting my female !

I mean, it was next to her and his body was waving from tail to head.

Isn't it a bit weird time for this or is that normal for males to do it year round without female wanting to copulate?

My male tried year round to hump my female, even though she didn't seem interested at all. They eventually mated in May.
