Thamnophis elegans terrestris - Coast Gartersnake
My wife & I went out today. I was hoping to find another California Red sided garter snake. I guess I couldn't be thant lucky...LOL! Anyhow, after no luck @ the first spot we went to, we checked out another spot that I had found snakes before. That is when I spotted this nice looking coast garter:D. It has alot of red on it, I think it is pretty cool:cool:

I think the season is about over, supposed to rain this week & then cold weather front. May have to switch gears & look for California Giant Salamanders soon;)

You really must have some snake attracting powers. I've been out about a dozen times and haven't even found a garter snake. Will be looking to go to the pine barrens of NJ soon. If anyone wants to go, let me know.

Yes, rough skin newts cross right by a friend of mines house. It is actually not far from a spot that in early spring the coast garter snakes are as abundant as the rattlesnakes are in the central valley.
Thanks everyone, I do not think I have "attracting powers" though. The snakes really start to move away once they see me...LOL! Actually, finding one snake is not that good IMPO. The only reason why I bagged this one, is because how nice it was.
Here are some pics from earlier this spring when I found several coast garters...not as nice as this one though:rolleyes: so I let them go after taking some pics.

your in the wrong State...LOL! They are usually along the trails with grass on each side. Does help to have a creek or pond nearby. I know there are alot of places to herp in the Carolinas, just need to get out & look next spring
Happy Herping

Up here we have lots of open fields and natural areas, but it hasn't been any help to me this year! Apparently the neighbourhood boys are doing well finding them, but every time I go out they've gone into hiding!
Alas, with the first deep frost just around the corner, I shall have to put my herping on hold till next year- :( those of you in the southern climate are much luckier than I - you can search all year!
Must keep working on convincing my husband to let me buy one (or 5 or 20...):D

Oh, believe me, I have put the word out, but I haven't seen any snakes being brought to my door. I'm not sure the young kids really believe me when I say I want a snake- they just sort of look at me funny..........but that may not have anything to do with the snakes!!!
