I caught this red sided garter snake last week in Marin. I was taking my wife out to lunch when I seen it. It musked all over me, so I had to clean up before we could eat:rolleyes: I usually do not "bag" reptiles out of the wild, but this is the nicest garter I have ever caught. Someone refered me to this forum, so I thought I would check it out. I keep some other snakes, but I have not kept a gartersnake since I was a teen(30years ago) thanks for looking

It just ate a tree frog scented mouse:D. I was sooo excited to see it eat, I yelled to my wife, "Come look, it is eating!" She don't get how important that is:rolleyes:;)

It looks like painted
What size is it?
The pattern is really similar to a red spotted garter.
Thanks for sharing this rare sight!

Hi
welcome to this forum
I believe what you have there is actually a red spotted garter - either California or Oregon (Thamnophis sirtalis infernalis or T.s.concinnus respectively)
hard to tell which from the photo and either possible in Marin I think, but I'd vote for the infernalis
very nice snake
congrats

the snake is a California red sided garter, Thamnophis sirtalis infernalis

Thank you,

that's fine too
since we are talking about the same snake
now i realize they are called that as well
with the state name in front of it, that makes it clearer
when you call it just a red-sided, I think you mean T.s.parietalis - hence the confusion

Maybe I should of titled it with the scientific name rather than the common name. That is why it is so important to have the scientific name when ordering snakes.

I also looked in the Peterson Field Guide by Robert Stebbins. It too calls the snake California Red-sided Garter Snake.

Also, I would like to say thank you for the warm welcome from everyone.:)

I hope to get out there again this week to hopefully find a mate:rolleyes: You would just have to come to California to pick up the garters offspring, since legally I would have to gift them out "in" California;)

"legally speaking", you would need a permit to even legally breed them. and legally speaking you need a fishing license to even capture them ;)
