Hi Guys,
I just thought I'd keep you all up to date with news I get from Rick from time to time, in his absence. As some of you may know, he's been taking a short break from his PhD studies to go hunting. This isn't just sport for Rick, but a necessary part of the way of life in his native Alaska.
So anyway, he's been on a moose hunt, stocking up on meat for the coming winter. Whilst 'calling in' the bull moose he found himself being stalked by a Grizzly! This beast was 7'6" square, maybe 9' on it's back legs. As it charged him through the stream he was (luckily) able to bring it down with a clean shot. So Rick lives to hunt another day!

The wildest thing I've done these past few days is assemble a childs' bicycle!

Man think of all the work cutting it up and hauling it out of there. I think he is set for meat for the winter. :) Thank for keeping up updated.

Rick' got that happy face on
the one when you get the bear instead of the other way 'round
and that's probably a nice chunk of his winter supply
Congratulation Rick, glad you're Ok.

OMG... well, I'm certainly glad Rick is ok but I'm thinking that poor bear was all excited to be getting such an unexpected meal, and Rick totally ruined it for him... LOL!!
Good luck with your hunting and gathering, Rick... :-)

My oh MY! Seeing those beasts on T.V. does them no justice -- that thing IS HUGE!
Indeed too bad it had to be killed, however as 'they' say, or as Rick might have said, "better him than me."

Huge indeed! I'm glad it was Rick out there, and not me. I'm afraid I would have shamed myself!:o How do you keep your nerve and steady a rifle with that beast crashing through the undergrowth towards you?

That's a biiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiig bear!
I would have fought it with only a hunting knife, sidestepping its charge then running the knife along the legs/side of the animal. Then as it turned to lung I would step backwards, and hold my knife in the air, the bear would run its jaw into the knife., then removing it I would stab it repeatively in the chest/neck while its struggling in pain. After the bear was dead, I would skin it, make a fire, and have a nice hearty meal.

Well, there was that John Hirsch guy who killed a black bear with a knife a few years ago. :D
Then again, black bears are Grizzly food and that one was in bad shape anyway.
Personally, I'd rather do what Rick did. :D

well black bears in the bear world are like your house cat compared to a Lion, although you do have your exceptions, and I of course would do the same as Rick also.......:D I mean any animal that is corned or very hungry or has babies is usaully dangerous.............

Why not yell "I'm a friend of Rick's!" at the bear?

Have to call him CROCKETT now... instead of Cazador. "Killed a bear when he was only three...!"

I've been a very "good boy" and have kept myself from spending much time goofing off online. I try to check the "urgent care" section once in a while, but there are often weeks that pass without getting online except for checking e-mail and doing research. It's paying off, but there are times when I really miss this forum.

This is my first time reading this thread, and all I have to say is this:
Rick, I know Alaska is remote, but they do have grocery stores!! STAY HOME, it's much nicer -- warm, safe, grizzly-free........ !! You're lucky you didn't become part of the bear's winter meat supply!!:D:D
BTW, welcome back, and I guess nice to meet you as well!!!;)

I'm not convinced that's a real bear. I think it's a throw rug.

Of course it's a throw rug. Everybody brings a gigantic grizzly throw rug on their hunting expeditions because it's SO much fun to lug it around with you for months at a time waiting for the perfect photo opportunity. I have one in the basement just in case of such an event.....:rolleyes::rolleyes:
