Here are two new additions to my herp family.
They were at the Columbus show today, and were marked as "red sided garters".
I think they are concinnus... does everyone concur?
I also need help sexing them... I hope I picked out a pair, but I am not as good at this as some of you are... so guess away!
Here is #1:

LOL! Which one? There are two.
I hope that number one is female and number two is male. Number two seems "fuller" behind the vent compared to Number one... but wanted to see what others might think.

definitely concinnus....as for sexing by photos, doesn't work on babies...gotta be closer to adult to be able to see the developed hemipenes.

Best chance to get a sure sexing is to hold them in my hand.
Second best would be a photo view of the vent.
As Don said it would be better when they were nearer to adult and sexing by photos will never be 100%.
The first - female and the second appears to be a male. Hard to tell on the second one
KitKat, The second picture appears closer or magnified so that makes it a little more difficult. In any event I would say the first one does look male, not sure about the second one. I think another pic of just 'her' ;) tail end might help. They both look like very nice, btw :))
Best of Luck,

the first one looks like a parietalis to me, but I can't say with the second
possibly the second one will be going into shed soon
I think I agree with Udo on the gender
ssssnakeluvr
10-14-2007, 06:29 AM
both appear to be parietalis....and I think they are females due how stocky they appear....but, we need photos of the belly by the tail to be able to better tell

ok one of the snakes is alot thinner then the other one,, thats why i figured one was a male and one a female,,,can a male and female from the same mother mate? or will that cause deformaties?
ssssnakeluvr
10-14-2007, 09:36 PM
they can mate with no problems...just dont keep breeding their babies to each other and so on...

mine look just like that,,lol,,,one of my snakes has eaten 1 minnow,,,1 feeder goldfish and two pinkies in the last 4 hrs,,,is this normal? can they eat to much?
Stefan-A
10-15-2007, 02:40 AM
In the long run they can eat too much and get obese, but not from one feeding.

Subadult garters can eat about 60% of their own weight in one meal.
First they will grow faster than thell become fat.
Fat females are called to produce small hatchlings.

Definitely a female. :D OK, so the picture lacks any clues as to the size of the snake, but the snake itself is 90-95cm long.
But what species?

The difference in weight can also be a sign to difference in gender.
Most adult females are heavier than 100 gram most males are usually lighter.
