Very nice looking Rhea, I've always had a soft spot for hognoses. Those guys in paticular are a very pretty species. I'll be interested to hear how they are for you....may have to get a pair myself.:cool:

Ooooooh they are so beautiful!!!!! I love this coloring... I was seriously looking at milksnakes before I saw the blue garters... so are these hognose or milksnakes??

Lori they are probably hogs lol i just guessed randomly but they looked like milk snakes to me lol :(

They are Tri-Colour Hog Nose Snakes (Lystrophis matogrossensis).

yes, they're hognoses
and my feeling about them so far is that their personalities are just as lovely as that of my other hognose even though it is a different species
I've never seen any quite as vividly coloured as these, especially the female
and I got them for a decent price
I am very pleased

this weekend I'll take more pics
we did notice that the head/face of this species is different from that of our western heterodon nasicus nasicus, Casey Jones
Casey has a little hard shovel extension at the end of his upturned nose
these lystrophis pulcher don't seem to have that
I'm gonna take a closer look, after they've had some time to settle

I never could remember that version
the one my daughter learned seems easier to remember:
red next to yellow is a dangerous fellow
red next to black is a friend of Jack

what I don't get is what happens if you have the red between the yellow and black - like does Jack have some dangerous friends?

thats the one I heard....I t hink it was on a movie called "Ssssssst" Crazy movie about a guy injecting people with venom and stuff and turning them into snakes...his crowning achievement before he was killed was to transform one guy into a king cobra, only to be immediately killed by a loose mongoose.....was kind of a lame movie, but hey, I was young and it was cool....:rolleyes:

Oh very nice. Was gonna pick up a pair of easterns awhile back, but got all freaked out about frog availability (would you believe those things actually develop problems when you feed them rodents? Now I am talking Easterns, not tri-colors. I've read they love them rodents and are easy to keep).

they do dig
in fact they're usually burrowed
but their noses don't have quite the shovel on them, as my western hognose's (Heterodon nasicus)

If i remeber rightly the shape also helps them root out frogs and the like buried in leaf litter an the like

Yeah, they are much bigger. I guess that is why they are not in Heterodon? Not really sure. Taxonomy rarely makes sense.

Probably because they're a south american snake.....seems only north and central american hogs are included in Heterodon. My best guess.:D

They're pretty different in many ways
they feel different to hold - much more smooth
their scales are different
their head shape is different
their temp and humidity requirements are different
their temperament is different
I don't see that close a relationship
that's probably why they're a different species
