Very nice Natrix maura, Thamnophis. I'd love to have a Natrix in my "collection".

I'd post a picture of my other pets, but I doubt anyone would be interested in seeing a guppy tank.

All nice pets, Fons, but the clarity/focus in your Natrix maura picture is remarkakable! Great photography.

Holy smoke, reptileparadise. Those are a LOT of pets. What type of research do you perform at the university?

Hi Brittany,

Yes, Yes you're very good !! It's a tervuren and a malamute ( most people call him "a husky" ) although he's a bit short for a malamute:p

You have a very nice Corky. The first picture is great, it looks like she's flying.

Best wishes Gijs & Sabine

Thanks. I work at a vet clinic and am very interested in all breeds. I don't get to see the Turvs or Mals very often as most people in the USA have German Shephs although the Turvs are getting more popular in Police work over here. I really do like the head on your Turv.
Thanks for the flying corgi comment. She loves to do that all day long, I swear she's a jumping bean some days. That's one reason I have started her in agility.

Thanks Cazador!
No: they don't change as they mature...
As I don't speak english so good I prefer to explain with the help of a book: ;-D

"Color and Pattern Phases: Highly variable. Two basic pattern types exist: ‘Blairs’ Phase’ animals are patterned with wide orange bands on a gray to black background (my last alterna female... ;-D), while ‘alterna phase’ snakes have narrow bands, with little or no orange. Often ‘alterna phase’ animals have alternating wide and thin bands, hence the name...
...Gray-Banded Kingsnakes are quite variable throughout their range, with many areas producing recognizable color and pattern combinations".

Well I thought I'd revive this thread since I got an anole yesterday (my first lizard I've ever bought from a pet store even though this is around my seventh anole). I was wondering if any of you have any experience with anoles because it looks gravid and I heard they come like that from pet stores sometimes (there was a big male in with it so it's possible). Does anybody have pics of gravid anoles, I couldn't find any online.

brown/bahama anole (Anolis sagrei)

reptileparadise
01-05-2007, 03:56 PM
I only have experience with Anolis carolinensis. I kept them in a 'rainforest' viv. Lots of plant, spraying 3 times a week. I didnt give them UV-light, but it may be better for them. I would supply a gravid female (esspecialy from a petshop) with loads of calcium! Just to be sure. A few plants to hide and a nice basking spot will do. Make sure she has a place for her eggs. A flowerpot with moist earth will probably be okay.
Good luck with her!

abcat1993
01-05-2007, 04:48 PM
Thanks. I put some Ivy in after reading some info about plants online (a good excuse to put a place for an anole to lay eggs in the tank). I still wouldn't mind pictures if you have them. The spot the eggs are in and the size relative to their body is probably similar.

I didn't know you could have prarie dogs as pets. Are they like giant hamsters or what?
They are no problem to keep here, but only few people breed with them:(. They are not at all like giant hamsters. They can actually be very tame and open if you have a lot attention to them when they are young. The prairie dog of my sister can run freely in her studio, except when she is not home. He comes for attention to you, he likes being stroked and getting candy ( for prairy dogs of course ). Although there is only a very small group he really trusts (the family: my sister), he is very nice to all the rest (the horde).

abcat: I'm not a big fan of anoles, but that's a nice 1:)

They cost about 6 dollars at PetCo.

And your prarie dog reminds me of what my sisters hamster did; escape, hide, then come running to my sister to it's ball.

Very good looking anole.....reminds more of a Fla. Bark anole (Anolis distichus floridanus) than a Brown anole (A. sagrei ssp.)...the dark line connecting the eyes on the top of the head is a dead give away, that and the nice gray colour. I know it's a female, but do you know what colour throat fan it has? If it's yellow or pale orange with out any red spots, it's definitely a Bark anole. Anyways, from gravid brown anoles that I've had ( I used to have a colony of A. sagrei sagrei), they looked a bit more bulbous around the lower abdomen, but it could still be gravid....does look rather fat. You should get a male to go with her; if she's not gravid, she would be soon.....I've found them to be REALLY easy to breed!

Last time that I had a female with my male (they were both wild caught by me and my dad) the male was bobbing his head, chasing her, expanding his throat fan. That is, until SOMEBODY (definitely not my cleaning lady) took off the water bottle which is holding a covering for a homemade hole in a homemade lid (sorry if that doesn't make any sense), and the female escaped. But the pictures online didn't look like it (I looked for less than a minute though). They had more of a random pattern like male brown anoles, just lighter.

Good eye! Chloe is !/2 german shorthair. The baby tarantula photo is great! The largest spiders we have here are wolf spiders. I pulled one out of the pool last summer that had about 150 babies on its back, when I sat her on the ground they scattered everywhere, it was something to see, the little guys were amazingly fast for there size.

I can really say it's a great pet. But you need to bring a lot of time with it when it's little and it's not something for little kids. During the mating season, especially males (luckily ours is a female) can be ver aggressive (ours is mildly irritated sometimes). During the rest of the year she just love's attention and food. She also love's to come to sleep next to you or on you (and preferably under a blanket, very warm:D). Something I've never seen in other pets: She trusts you completely. If she wants to get a stroke, she just let herself fall. She 'knows' you'll catch her and stroke her, of course this means sometimes she makes quite a fall...

I'll be visiting a certain pet store in about 8 hours and I might be coming home with some sort of ratsnake. Either a Baird's ratsnake or a red ratsnake (aka corn snake).

It's 2:21AM and I can't sleep.

Bairds are nice snakes Stefan. Corns are a bit....well, Corns.

I always wanted to breed Bairds but never got around to it. Texas Rats are nice too, can you get them?

Stefan-A
03-29-2007, 05:41 PM
I doubt I could get my hands on a Texas ratsnake atm, but somebody will probably have babies for sale in a few months. I'd love to get my hands on an Emory's ratsnake or an eastern milksnake, but it's hopeless.

Corns might be a bit boring because they are so mundane, but I try to think of corns as just another species of ratsnake. ;) If I'm lucky, I'll find a really nasty one, with tattoos and a drinking problem.

adamanteus
03-29-2007, 05:48 PM
I'm kinda fed up with Rat Snakes now. I've had so many over the years. I know they're beautiful snakes in their own right, but compared to Garters I find them pretty dull. I'd still keep Everglades Rats again, if the chance arose, or Aesculapian Snakes (which I've never seen in the flesh), but the usual run of the mill species just don't "float my boat" anymore.

Stefan-A
03-29-2007, 05:55 PM
I'd love to get my hands on any Zamenis species, including the aesculapian snake. Never had a ratsnake of any kind, so I don't quite know how different they are compared to garters. I mean their behavior. Less active, right?

adamanteus
03-29-2007, 06:02 PM
Yeah, they feed, they sleep, they dump, they feed again. No doubt a million Rat Snake fans will disagree with me. I've kept all sorts but it's Garters for me from now on.

Gyre
03-29-2007, 07:32 PM
See, I've only kept garters. I've caught Brown Snakes and those crankey water snakes, but Garters are the only kind I've brought home. I assumed all snakes had this much personality, but you guys seem to know otherwise. :p

I also like the blue ones a lot, James. They're also very curious and will eat everything that I give them out of my hand. But it's important to not overfeed them, becouse then there shedding can not keep up with there growing.

The natural color of the procambarus clarkii is braun-redish. So these nice colors are selected breeding results.

Wow those crayfish are just awesome !! All of you folks actually have some very cool looking animals !!

James, I kept Corns along with Garters for awhile. Until about a year ago, I had some yearling Gold Dusts/het motley which were beautiful but as you implied ... Corns are just not Garters, lol ... The Corns are plently happy in sweater box racks. I tried housing Corns (one at a time but several individuals), in a really nice, big display enclosure. They only came out when they wanted to feed and were so totally docile that my Mom ( at 85 & having never seen a 'live' snake before ) held 4ft adults casually. I suspect being so far removed from WC animals adds to their less then enthusiastic demeanor.

Garters on the other hand seem to possess/reflect individual 'personalities' for lack of a better term and also have an intense, hunter type facial expression to match ...

enjoy the evening ...

Sorry for the late answer, Snaky. Missed that one:o
We don't have them all seperate. We have 2 couples white together, 2 couples red together and 1 couple blue together. They can be aggresive to eachother, but they have places to hide and get away in the cilinders.

First very cute Prarie Dog! And some amazing animals on here!! Love the Parrot too, My husband use to have a blue conure. But had to get rid of her when we move in together and had our son. Because she only knew him and he had a job that took up alot of his time, so she wouldn't get as much attention. But hope to get another parrot one day :)

I didn't know you could have prarie dogs as pets. Are they like giant hamsters or what?

We had one growing up. His name was pudge. They're like Groundhogs. That's how we saw him anyway lol. Only ours was wild and here it's not common to have them as pets becuase I don't even think they're here in Ontario? Think they're more in the western provinces. I didn't even think anyone bred them until reading this thread lol.

Ours bit me twice tho. Had to get stiches. First time he got scared because my sister had friends over and they were bugging him and he got scared and bit me :( The next time same thing, got scared and bit. Man they can BITE! lol. But cute none the less.

Hello !!! Simply LOVELY Dobe you have there :) . I have a 12 year old Rottie, Max. About 13 years ago, lol I did a ton of research on Rotts & Dobes. At the time a quality Dobe was not to be had in this country. Far too many genetic issues. I was in contact with some Canadian breeders at the time. There were some very nice animals 'up north'. My female Rott was all cuddley with my cat or any cat for that matter. Max is also very cat friendly just not a 'cuddley' kind of guy, lol.

Well here is 12 year old Max on 'mail person' watch, lol. There's a window right above his head (side of the house) and another window directly to his right (front of house), perfect 'watch spot'. It's 'funny' because if I opened the door when the mail person was there he would grab his kong (rubber toy) and be all friendly wiggling his butt for all he's worth  . For a 90LB dog he sure disappears easily into that corner of the sofa. Max has intense 'ball drive' but curiuosly he's not so interested in 'live' prey, per say. He does however LUV the 'stalk'. He will fixate on something like a Pointer Dog only he lowers himself a few inches (like a cat) and slowly inches forward but only advances when his 'target' moves. Should his 'target' turn around and look at him, he freezes. He'll keep doing it until say the bird flies away. Afterwhich he never chases after it. Kind of 'game over' :p ...

have a great day,

personally I don't go much for pastelly or garishly coloured snakes
I do have a lavender king who's got the best personality ever. He's a rescue and his nature was apparent from the first itme I picked him up. Visually I don't find him appealing at all and I find that true for most albinos.
My own skin is sort of pale and pink and I've always wished for more pigment
I even have some mixed feelings about the blue tones. I like certain blues a lot. But there's something about the bright turquoise that has the appearance of dyed flowers. It's a bit freakish. My T. s. similis is a like that sometimes.

The Pine is great. I want to get him a little girl to play with, but he is still a little too young yet.

They eat like crazy, but I have a system worked out.

Whatever my kings don't eat (b/c they love to go off-feed this time of year, yet I still have to try to get them to eat every three days) I feed to the pine. He will eat mice and rats, and hiss when I pay a little too much attention to him.

They make great captives and are a pleasure to work with. The coolest thing about them is how they feel. They are really rough scaled. More so than a garter.

But the hiss is incredible. It is really loud and scares everyone who has ever seen her (the non-herp geeks that is). Though he will hiss, he never bites and has only rattled the tail once.

My garters are impossible to handle though. I have two of them, and every time I go to pick one up, the other darts out of the cage. I love those little guys.

I've had my kingsnakes go on a hunger strike for months... unless they are young ones you really don't need to try every 3 days ;)

If mine don't eat, it's up to the next week and sometimes I even skip a week if they are not that active. I give big mice or Mastomys natalensis though.

The pine snake sounds fun... sissing like natrix maura probably. It's also mainly acting though with natrix maura.

Not worrying about the kings. Have kept those guys for years and got those down pretty well. The pine snake just reaps the rewards when they are picky. I should have clarified that I go on the every 3 days schedule after they miss their weekly feeding. That's all.

I love elapids. Pseudonaja Textilis and naja pallida are favs.

Live in Jersey and have no captive experience with hots. So i just read about them. It's okay. Almost glad I don't live in a place where they are easily obtained.

Though being from Jersey, I would take a bullet for a crotalus horridus.
Well not really.

adamanteus

I will probably never keep them again. At the time I was licenced (it is necessary in the UK also). It was an experience which I enjoyed for some years, but I won't repeat it.

Snaky
09-18-2007, 02:44 PM
I don't like the fact that you're unable to get the permit here, although it exists. Or you should have friends in the right places, like the mayor of the (very) small town that you live in.

If you are a capable and responsible keeper, it should be allowed in my eyes. A visit from an expert should be the only criterea...

It's actually the same if I want to hold more than 30 animals... another very stupid thing, so don't count my animals, certainly not when it's breeding season;)

RZL36
09-18-2007, 03:06 PM
I don't think I can get the necessary permits for New Jersey. I'm fairly sure you have to prove some sort of academic affiliation (my collegiate work was in English and History).

Not to step on toes, but I'm not sure a visit from an experienced keeper would do all that much. I mean all they can really do is look at your caging. What could that really do?

I'm into the idea of a certification program, where people are mentored. They have to prove a certain amount of time worked with other people's snakes. I think that is how it works in Florida.

What did it take to be licensed in the U.K.?

RZL36

A bunch of money. An inspection by the local environmental health officer (who had never seen a snake up-close before), and a bunch of money. Oh, and a big public liability insurance policy! And a bunch of money.

Not a bad idea. Here it takes a neighbour to say no and you can't get the permit ;) .

You have to 'announce' that you want to have the permit and anybody can go to the town hall and say they object to it. Starting from there, you have practically no chance to get the permit anymore unless like I said you know the right people. Of course it's also a load of money here James, you have to get the money somewhere ;)

The U.S. is a little more leniant in those instances. In the next state over (Pennsylvania), you just need to be 18. In Jersey, it's near impossible.

However, I do know that insurance companies will drop you if you get bit by your captive venomous snake. Also the insurance company will handle it as an attempted suicide.

lol, that would be Blair...he is adorable but he is unstable, most people think we are insane for not having him PTS, but he is really a very sweet dog, however can only be handled by me or my mom.

Yeah, I'm lucky I have great kids....and no big giant hungry snakes!!
Of course, if the kids saw what I've been writing about all this they'd just laugh their butts off anyway, cause Mom is SOOOOO threatening!!

Lulu, here's a couple pics just for you of my dear Monty--

Before we put the deck on the front of the house, he would come and hang his head in the sliding glass door!! I swear he'd look around and go, "Hmmmm, yeah, not a bad barn you have here...." :-)

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/head_in_door_2.JPG

And here's one showing what a great, gentle soul he was... he was everyone's "Uncle Monty"!!! He always slept in this run-in shed with the goats and calves.

http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/Monty_in_barn_with_pals.JPG

We lost him this spring to a bad colic... the vet could not save him. He was in his early 30's... I so thought we'd have a few more good years together. I miss him every day.

Thanks James. I'm sitting here all snively again. He was truly one of the kindest, gentlest souls I've ever met. I still sit out on his grave and imagine wrapping my arms around his neck again. Some of them just never leave you.
