My tegus were very healthy, active, they ate well, had free range for part of the day (with a warm spot available of course!) They appeared to be very happy if that is possible (apparently you don't believe this IS possible) You're right! I am sure your animals are much happier living in a tub!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad::mad: :mad: I'm still trying to figure out why you keep referring to age. I rehomed them because I gave up my reptile room because we were rescuing farm animals and had to focus on them. I have no idea how long they lived or if they are even still alive!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You know it is my opinion that you are a POMPOUS know it all! I was reading your posts and I saw that you referred to chickens as creatures that possess reasoning abilities. I have lived on a farm long enough to know that you KNOW NOTHING about CHICKENS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would say a GARTER SNAKE is much smarter than a CHICKEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All the information I am giving you can be readily found on any decent tegu forum or care sheet that is worth its salt. As for your other comment. I grew up on a farm, I moved to the city and I still have 6 chickens of my own, and I take care of over 20 daily. I also work with a couple locally that are shape trained and extremely intelligent.
Clearly you never took the time with your chickens, as if you once again use the magic search engine google- you will find plenty of examples of chickens being trained.
Millinex,
Ever thought about helping someone rather than trashing them?
Seems like if someone isn't as knowledgeable as you they're not worth your trouble.
I'm sure you've made some mistakes along the way, as all of us have.
Might be better to educate as a way to help future reptiles and their owners.
Anyone who gets a large reptile such as a tegu, iguana, monitor, etc and treats it like a dog and denies it proper husbandry is not worth "helping". They didn't bother to do research on the commitment of the animal before hand. If snake rehomed the tegus, admitted he didn't keep them properly and THEN asked for advice I'd be glad to help, however if he comes on a forum bragging about blatant bad husbandry and ignoring all logic - I'm not going to be buddy buddy with him.

Again, how long did they live? I never said TEGUS could not be happy, I said snakes can not be happy. I have personally witnessed problem solving/reasoning abilities with my monitors multiple times.
If you took the time to read, you would realize my posts where about keeping SNAKES in tubs. Not tegus nor monitors. All of my monitors have spacious cages and are extremely well taken care of.

Feel free. The sad part is you'd rather resort to attacks and insults rather than learning from experience and taking my advice on how to properly house a tegu. Clearly you know more than the hundreds of people keeping and breeding these animals not to mention the field studies of these animals.
Clearly one guy keeping his differently and he's the one doing it right! You're no better than "dancingwithsavs".

You know, coming from the person who stuck up for a kid who blatantly didn't do his research on garters, killed a couple, and sold the rest (I stuck up for him too) you sure are being more harsh than helpful. Lambasting someone for something that happened in the past that you aren't even fully informed about is just counterproductive. It makes people even less likely to listen to any good tips you could give that might help out some animals, which sucks because you do seem to know what you're talking about.
No one slammed me when I showed up here and admitted to having done some things wrong raising my snake. They just gave me advice, and now I've changed a lot of the things about how I care for him. (He deserves more credit for it than I do, but he *is* over the average life expectancy of a garter snake btw :D )
Again, how long did they live? I never said TEGUS could not be happy, I said snakes can not be happy. I have personally witnessed problem solving/reasoning abilities with my monitors multiple times.

You know, this sounds a bit like you're bragging about the difference in the quality of care you give your monitors and garters... I sort of agreed with you on how snakes could respond to environmental stimulation a while back, but not any more. I recently got my snake a larger, well-decorated enclosure, and whether or not he is 'happy' is anyone's guess, but he is definitely more active, and is always moving about as opposed to almost zero activity before.

I'm still learning about Tank. I've figured out that when he digs in a back corner of his enclosure that means he's tired.
Tonight I learned something new.
I have my laptop on the floor near Tank's enclosure. This way I can work on the computer and spend time with him.
While working on the computer, Tank kept getting out of his enclosure. He'd circle around me or try to walk across the laptop. Then he'd go back in his water. After the 6th time in 5 minutes I turned my attention to him. As he was coming out of his water for #7 I looked him in his eyes and realized what he wanted. I lifted up his blanket and he went right under it and fell asleep.
I bet he was thinking "stupid human":D

06-29-2011, 11:36 AM
Yeah, better not to try. There are few snake species that don't seem to have too many stress problems or occurrences of eating each other when housed together, but for the most part it's not a good idea. Corns do have a fairly high incidence of cannibalism when housed together. Recently someone who just joined CS.com made the mistake of buying a Westen Hog then a few weeks came across a corn snake he couldn't pass up and figured they would be able to bunk together until he could get a separate set up for the corn. However the hog ate the corn.

RedSidedSPR
06-30-2011, 08:44 AM
lol, they're not necessarily cannibalistic, but they may end up eating one... very unlikely though, and almost surely won't happen with another corn.

06-30-2011, 09:12 AM
If you aren't already on CS.com but want to join to look into them more, just be aware that co-habbing is a hot botton topic, like de-clawing a cat on a cat lover forum. Personally, I believe the danger of cannibalism is often a bit overstated there, but it does happen occasionally.

This girl hangs out on the edge of our carport most nights and she's one of the most impressive American toads I've seen. Tank lives the good life. Here he is waking up from a nap on the couch.
He's slow to get up. Not a get-up-and-go turtle.
He take about 20 minutes to stretch and get a neck rub and sometimes he just goes back to sleep.
Today he got up, used his restroom and went back to bed.

Yeah, i used to want one, but i thought the same thing. Now i just want a racer :D
ConcinusMan
07-09-2011, 11:37 AM
Same difference. I know that opinions will most definitely differ from mine, but that's another genus (Coluber) that is ill suited for tank/tub life. In my experience, every attempt to keep a racer or coachwhip in captivity has ended badly. They were just to nervous and flighty, wouldn't eat well if at all, and just don't like to be confined.
RedSidedSPR
07-09-2011, 11:44 AM
I used to think the same thing, and still do on most occasions, but i know it's possible. Wayne has a racer, that eats great.
I'd never keep a racer in anything even remotely small, at least as 20-30gal, and only if i felt capable. They are almost impossible to tame to like handling, but they can be nice and calm/friendly as long as you don't touch them :D.
I love racers, and hope to have one someday, but yes. They, technically, aren't the MOST suited for captivity, and only by the "pros" or someone capable and experienced.

OK. I'll take your word for it. But it does look more like a coachwhip than any yellow tail cribo I've ever seen.

Yeah, that one I'm holding was a real sweetie, and that was the smaller of the two. They were really inquisitive and seemed very intelligent. Real "snuggle bugs" too. They seemed to enjoy the handling and interaction. They had every personality aspect that I love, in common with garter snakes.

Yes it's a pair of Yellowtail Cribos (& the last one is an Eastern Indigo).
Richard is that a D. m. melanurus or D. m. unicolor you're holding? Looks like a Black tail to me but hard to tell in the pic.
Cribos can be a handful for a lot of keepers & intimidating as well & due to the potential size some get (10'+ it's said for the Yellowtails), crazy feeding responses, and garter-like activity levels. Those that keep cobras find them very comparable in "intelligence" and the way they move and act as well. Awesome snakes that I feel extremely fortunate to now keep.
Bushsnake I gotta ask, why did you ever stop?
As for Coachwhips I agree that most keepers wouldn't be able to keep them, but I do have a friend out East who kept and sucessfully bred them. I believe he was also keeping them in 8' long cages as well though.

I caught a very skinny milksnake, while I was on the phone at the same time, in my bedroom. I've had her about a month. Shes two feet long and much healthier, strong eater since day one. Shes remarkably docile. Never struck at me, musked or anything, but doesn't really like to be held, she just keeps moving. i moved her to a 7 1/2 gallon bin about a week ago. She was fine for a few days, has eaten two mice, but today she seems to be chewing at the walls of the plastic a bit. I'm not sure what threw her off. I did add a heated corner but she seemed to love it, next morning shes chewing on the walls. (I removed it.)
Any thoughts? I can't see any teeth either, how small are they? She doesn't have any striking behavior, she just slithers up and kinda pokes things til she decides its food and just eats it.

Set a food item outside and wait for them to collect on it.

Then it wasn't a pacific chorus frog. (Pseudacris regilla, or Hyla regilla)These guys transform to land dwelling adults at about 60-90 days from hatching, or 1cm long (Chantel's little guy just transformed, you can tell by looking at his mouth area) and max out at around 5cm. In fact, most of the ones you'll find are smaller than 5cm.
As was mentioned already, these are west coast frogs. Nearly every time you hear a frog calling in a hollywood movie, it's this frog you're hearing. Your chorus frog is probably Pseudacris ornata. But still shouldn't be the size of your fist.
Tadpoles are easy to raise but frogs require a constant abundant supply of soft-bodied insects to stay healthy. They need to eat several times a day or at least eat very well once a day. Forget about this "about 4 times weekly" you'll hear on the internet. That only applies to full grown frogs that eat a very large meal at one sitting. Adults do well eating flies and small earthworms. Little ones like this one could be a challenge or expensive to keep fed properly unless you have your own continuous supply of fruit flies.
Just keep a close eye on their appearance. If they don't look plump and rounded, and start to look a little caved-in, they're not getting enough to eat.
kibakiba
07-11-2011, 08:18 PM
He's eaten a couple fruit flies today, and since he's so tiny right now, I'm not worried about him eating too much. We have some more wingless fruitflies wandering in the tank, so if he's hungry he's not going to starve. Besides, we also have a lot of baby house flies that are constantly born near one of our windows, which I'm sure he'll eat too.

Frogger is one loud frog. He's on the edge of his water dish with one of the wingless flies sitting on his head, peeping the night away. I didn't think baby frogs croaked too much, if at all. Maybe he's thanking me for the flies, his belly is pretty big right now. :D

I haven't seen many this year either, which is a bit odd. The only one I've seen my dog sniffed out..
I'd think those temps should be find. A lot like what's outside, just without the really high temps. What do you feed the ones you keep? I've always used crickets and cut up nightcrawler bits.

Yeah, the nightcrawlers probably aren't a good staple, but I didn't really do much research since I've only kept them for a few days at a time. :p Is there anywhere you can buy pinhead crickets? Those are small enough for even really small breeds of frog, so the skink might be able to handle them, but sometimes places don't carry them.

If you cant find pinheads, buy full adult crickets. They breed like crazy, and if you put dirt in their container, they'll lay a ton of eggs, which hatch pretty fast under the right conditions.

Thought I'd share what this little punkin has been busy growing into:
5 Weeks when I fell in love with the little stinker, still at his breeder's house:

6 months old - learning all about that show dog stuff & trying to grow into those ears...
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/jitami/Hades/Hades6mobdayfront.jpg
12 months being a dork :) - the beautiful girl holding his lead in the win pic below was approaching, so he was being all wiggly & excited. He's loves to show and can't wait until she takes him to play show dog:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/jitami/Hades/Goofball12mo.jpg
15 months checking on the kids next door - he LOVES them and they him:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/jitami/Hades15molookingoverfence.jpg
Last week, 16 months, taking a very nice win at a Great Dane specialty show in Monterey (btw, I'm none of those people in the pic - judge, handler, club reps. I was standing in front of him off camera):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/jitami/Hades/HadesMonterySpecialtyWD.jpg
Besides being beautiful (and huge, yes, I know), he has been the easiest puppy I've ever owned. He's as sweet as can be, loves absolutely everyone and everything and is just a joy to have around. He has stolen my heart and gone a long way in filling the giant hole left by my last dane boy. I cherish the time spent doing things with him, whether traveling here and there for shows or just hanging on the couch. It took me some time to get over losing my last boy and it's obvious that this one's going to hurt just as much when he has to leave, tho I've told him that's absolutely not allowed. <3

The smaller/darker hound is Gizmo, we adopted him from the SPCA after he had been adopted once and brought back after a month... he's a bit of trouble, but certainly worth it. The larger/lighter hound is Charlie. I saw him posted on craigslist with a very cute little female puppy. They were trying to rehome both together. I'm not crazy about girl dogs & didn't want to ad two at that time, so didn't think much more about the ad... until a couple weeks later when he showed back up on craigslist w/ no mention of his 'sister'. Seems they had found the cute little puppy a home, but not Charlie Bear. So we went to meet him and his owner at local dog park. The former owner was completely unemotional and obviously not attached to this dog. I happily handed her 25 bucks and put our boy in the car. He came with the leash and collar he had on and nothing else. No bed, toys, food, nothing. Just given away like you'd give away an old tire or something. Sigh. He's a fabulous boy and completely raised Hades. He was obsessed with mothering the dane puppy and they're still the best of buds. Charlie is a tank and has no problems running with and at Hades!
And one of Chance so he doesn't feel left out:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v202/jitami/Dogs/DSC02567.jpg
Man, the picture of old man, Chance, above was less than two years ago. It's sad to realize how much he's aged since then.... he's much more grey and much less active. He's also lost most of his hearing & vision and has a bit of senility. He's 14, so not young, but it's still sad...

Thanks. He was a pound puppy and our best guess is Border Collie/pomeranian mix, maybe long haired chihuahua mixed in there? He's 25-30 pounds and about the size of a large sheltie/small border collie. Whatever he is, he's been a great dog. We've had him since my oldest, now starting his second year of college, was in kindergarten. Chance was the perfect kid dog. He followed the boys everywhere, herded them away from things he thought were dangerous, etc. We don't have much time with him and we're trying to cherish every moment :(

I can never repay her for all she did for my kids and I.
My kids will still be talk about her when they're old. That's a great dog.
Each of my kids will take a framed poster size print of Ally and them when they get their own place.
She(Ally) still has one wall in the living room.
Miss the old girl.
I remember her last couple of months. We spent a lot of time just sitting together in the back yard enjoying the cool air. She sat next to me and watched the kids play.
I know she considered them her puppies.
We both knew her time was short. She had been on borrowed time for a few years according to her Vet.

Each of my kids will take a framed poster size print of Ally and them when they get their own place.
That is a great idea, Steve, and one I might steal.
In the time that we've had Chance we've also had 4 great danes and the two basset hounds. The kids love them all, but Chance was their first dog and definitely made just for them. You may have heard this story before. It's my favorite Chance story, so not sure who I've told it to, but here goes. We had taken the kids and Chance for a drive and stopped off at this small lake/large pond for the kids to play in for a little bit. Chance did not think this was a good idea at all! Chance ran up and down the shore barking and whining at the kids, trying to convince them to get out of the water. When that didn't work he took all of their toys, one by one, from the shore up to the truck and left them there. It was quite obvious he was saying, 'Enough of this nonsense! We're going home!' LOL
Ugh, these stories are making it more obvious at how much he's changed in the last year or so. We've been on borrowed time for a while, too. When my son left for school last summer we made sure he understood that Chance may not make it until the next break. Here we are a year later still issuing the same warnings. Sadly, we're getting very close to having to make that awful decision... well, it's already been made really, just watching for the right time :(

Yea they are. You see them in petstores all the time. They are easy to keep, but also gotta be kept just right. They eat crickets and stuff. I've never kept one, and can't give you all the info.
This should, however, be posted in the other pets tread (http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/garter-snake-lounge/167-other-pets-non-garters.html) ;)

Green anoles make great pets, they will eat right out of your hand.
However, if you have a petstore that sells them, I would encourage long tailed lizards. They are very funny little lizards, and they can be kept with anoles.
Anoles and long tailed grass lizards eat crickets. My setup was more of a 40 tall I think, and had bark chips for substrate. Lots of leafy plants.

Lavender oil repels fleas. You put a few drops at the base of the tail, and on the neck. My friend uses that method on her outdoors cat. Works like a charm.
You could also spray a 50/50 mix of apple cider vinegar on your dogs skin. It makes it more acidic, so the fleas wont like it. Apple cider vinegar also makes hair soft, I use it in my own hair as a rinse :D When it dries, it doesn't smell like vinegar anymore.
I also found this online:
Lemon Spray Repellent
Cut a lemon into quarters, cover with boiling water and let it steep overnight. In the morning, spray all over your dog, especially behind the ears and around the head generally (be careful of his eyes), around the base of the tail, and under your dog’s legs.

Thank you!! I will try them all!! (not at once of course)

I'm sure you could actually mic the lavender and vinegar water together, you'd have to shake it before you spray it, but I'm sure that might work. I'm not sure, though.
