Very cool roaches! Nice to see some insects here.
And my sympathies to all with dogs nearing that time. Mine is a 10-year-old Golden Retriever/Wheaton terrier cross. He's developing a few issues associated with age. When the time comes, I know the decision will be difficult, but I hope I can make it with love for the dog.
Way off topic: Sometimes it seems to me we treat our dying pets with greater humanity than what society will allow us to show for ourselves. Having watched both my parents and my father-in-law suffer through terminal cancers with no hope for recovery, I would appreciate the option of determining when I check out rather than experiencing ongoing pain while bed-ridden.
Back on topic: I almost bought a blue-tongued skink this week. Careful examination showed some health issues, so I backed off. But I'm sure one is in my future at some point. Think skink!

I was tempted to buy a rosy boa today. They are adorable, but too expensive. The one I saw seemed so sweet. There was also a Kenyan sand boa that I saw and wanted. You can't have me buy pinkies at the pet store without me spending an hour looking at all the adorable reptiles. I can't wait until I start making money... I'm moving and getting more stuff for my snakes. :D

I like secretive snakes. I love how active garters are, but some others are lovely to just look at and feed with minimal handling.

I can't go to the pet store without holding puppies, petting kittens...visiting all of the other animals...and going into the reptile room for quite a while. I held the cutest little milk snake the other day...she was so sweet, and I was so tempted...but that would mean another enclosure and I just don't have the money.
I totally agree with Derek...if I was suffering from a terrible disease, I would like the option to go to the doctor and be humanely euthanized. I wish I could ask my dog if she just wants me to take her...I wish I knew what she wants.
Selena is definitely secretive...Chantel, you would love her!

I enjoy all types of snake or reptile really, from a blob of love, to something feisty, as long as it couldn't tear my skin open... Like a ball python or a tegu. I'd rather one of those be a blob of love ;)

I've been sitting with my dog since 1 o'clock this afternoon. She is in really bad shape. She can't get up and she is shaking all over and vomiting and her lungs are filling up with fluid. She can't breathe. I couldn't get the vet to come out to put her to sleep today...she can't come until the morning...so she has been suffering all day and has to continue to suffer until morning. I'm sad about losing her..but now I just want her suffering to end...I can't stand seeing her like this. It's going to be a very long night.

ConcinusMan
01-19-2011, 07:40 PM
I'm not exactly terrified of them. That would be irrational. Sort of like having the urge to kill possums on sight for no reason at all
Some spiders, (only some) depending on how they look, just give me the creeps. Not exactly fear, but, well, I don't know how to explain it. Even the one's that give me the creeps don't scare me if that makes any sense. Spiders fascinate me, even the one's that creep me out. I always avoid killing them if possible and so I'd rather catch and relocate (even a big hairy creep one found in say, the bathtub) whenever possible.
When I was a kid living in CA, some friends and I would often have a contest to see who could catch the biggest black widow. There was no shortage of those around in late summer. I was not afraid of those, just respectful. They are very docile for the most part. Then one day, during the hunt for the big one, I hit the jackpot and found an adult female black widow. It was albino! Seriously!

oh wow. Awesome. I have heard of them before so I did a google search. here's another. I noticed that one you pictured doesn't have pink eyes. Maybe it's not truly albino, or perhaps it's just a different type of albino like nebraska radixes. I wonder how they keep these healthy without UV exposure?

I've been moving some stuff around, so I've had Marieke's cage sitting on the living room floor for a couple of days
normally I don't see that much of her, since we keep different hours, so it kind of surprised me to see her out in the open this morning, looking kind of grey and scruffy
http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5203/5376178346_bb94b65c4c_b.jpg
I think she was asleep, because after moved the cage to get a better look, she stretched her legs slowly and ambled off to her lair
interestingly, once she got moving she also got to look more like her normal self - iridescent greenish black http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5287/5376272338_baee057ff4_b.jpg

It is so nice to be able to get up close and personal with a snapping turtle.
Tank is comfortable with all the activity in the house and the constant attention he gets. If no one is paying attention to him he partially comes out of his enclosure until somebody notices him and lays down to talk with him.
I keep an old toothbrush by his enclosure for scrub down purposes. He aloud me to brush his head the other night. He rested his head in one of my hands while I scrubbed.
This is one awesome turtle. He weighed in at 4.65 lbs tonight. That's .65 lbs in 2 weeks.
He still shows signs of be young so I'm guessing he's still got a lot of growing to do.

It was my Dad's birthday at the weekend, and we got him this little lady:

We got him the mantis (she's an African) and some lunch-bugs, and Mum got him the setup to keep her in.
He's been obsessed with them since I can remember, and was more than surprised and excited when he 'unwrapped' her. :D
When we were over in California, we literally spent nearly an hour at a petrol (or should I say gas) station, just so he could stand and watch one sitting on one of the columns.
She's even won my Mum over, who was tolerant but really not a fan. Exotic pets just seem to have that magic ability! ;)

I have some sad news
Drache, my PI king, who's been having trouble with a recurring abscess on his head, has died of kidney failure. He's been at the vet's for a few months now, and they couldn't save him. In consideration of the fact that I got him seven years ago as an over 5' adult, he was probably pretty old. Now that I know he's not coming back, I miss him.
Here's one of the last photos I took of him last summer when he was well for a while

What a coincidence. I went to petco today and saw that they had some new additions. Same toad. Incidentally, the item I went to pick up has increased in price from ridiculous to "OMG! you have to be kidding me".
8 oz package of silversides went from $5.60 to $8.88. The 16 oz sally's silverside flats went from around 8 dollars to almost $14

Hey team, I know I've pretty much disappeared for awhile, but that's how life goes sometimes.. Thought I'd update everyone on what I'm doing now etc...
I ended up rehoming my last couple garters last year to some young kids who wanted a pet snakes, but whose mothers where unsure of things, worked out great. Sadly, in winter, there isn't exactly much herping, so I've been plenty busy with school, work, and my main love of monitor lizards. I got rid of my last snake alltogether 2 days ago which was an almost 7 foot northern pine.. Here is the main source of terror in my house right now:
http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y16/CapAnt53/assss.jpg
He's a 4ish foot asian water monitor that I purchased from one of the local herp shops. I walked in to get mice for my nile monitor/savannah monitors (both about 3ish feet) and saw him and died. He was kept in a tiny cage because they weren't meant to handle that size monitor, and I took him home the next day, I'm now in the process of building his 7 foot cage that will last a few months until I move into my new house and can give him a bedroom. As you can see, he's got an attitude, and he's a huge jerk, but he's actually coming around nicely and is handleable now.

Steve,
Both your kids are grinning like Cheshire cats!
Rhea,
I LOVE frogs! The frog prince was my favorite tales as a kid and I always had a selection of frogs and toads in the house. ( I scared a cashier one time by putting one of my pets on the conveyer belt. I was more upset that she scared my frog! )
I've got a new scaley friend coming in the mail once the weather warms up. ( Not a garter though! ) Right now he's being trained by the breeder to be friendly to humans. So far he's getting straight A's. I think she might cry when he leaves!
I also have a new critter to share but this one has fur. Lemme rummage around and see if I can find some GOOD pics of him. He's kinda busy most of the time.

Introducing Captain Jack Sparrow, our new kitten we added to our menagarie around Christmas. When he arrived, he had a raging case of diarrehea from the worst case of coccidia that our vets had ever seen. (Which is why he became a barn cat and not a house cat! ) We just got that problem licked. Albon is a wonderful drug!
The entire time he's been scampering around like he was jet propelled! ( Most of the time, he was! ) The two older, barn cats are miffed that they have to share their living quarters with him even though he gets locked up every night. But they are getting over it slowly. I just caught our fantastic huntress Checkers, instigating a play session with him this morning. Overall he's affectionate, a chatterbox and not afraid of nothin'! This morning when I was trying to get some better pics of him from the open doorway of the house, he darted inside! :eek:Now I have two groups of cats, one that are strictly indoors the others are strictly outdoors and the two groups never mix. He made for the first soft place he could find which happened to be the sheepskin on top of the couch. However, that was also where the 3 indoor cats who had never met him, were sacked out. Things got a little loud and fast after that!
Sigh! Never a dull moment with a new kitten around!

I just don't think I could handle a cat bringing me a mangled snake. In fact, I know I couldn't. Last (and only) cat I had was when I was 7 and I hated her guts for that. It was her favorite thing to do, dragging mangled half-dead garter snakes and rabbits in the house and leaving them in the bed. I realize she was only showing her affection by doing so but still.
You probably saved his life, getting rid of the coccidia like you did. That's very human of you. He is a pretty cat.

So far, I've been lucky. No mangled snakes. Checkers brings me birds, mice, chipmunks, maybe a baby rabbit or two and lots and lots of headless squirrels ( they're nearly as big as she is! ) but no snakes. She's the best rodent exterminator I've ever seen. BUT I know she has her heart set on my big corn Draco. I can see her lick her lips whenever I bring him outside!

Oh no, it was Checkers! Hubby and I sat on our upstairs porch one time and watched her chase a large squirrel up to the tippy top of a pine tree, up where the small branches are, all for the sheer crime of it cussing her out! Make no mistake, Checkers is a fearless squirrel killer! I just wish she'd quit leaving the bodies in the stallion's stall. He doesn't like the smell of death in there.
Wanna cat that will kill mice??? Get a tortoise-shell any day!

My cat brings me live birds, mice, rabbits and snakes all the time. She lets them go in the house. We have a mouse infestation because of her. When she does it, sometimes I swear I just want to kick her(but I wouldn't). I hate seeing the blood all over the house (anything that has to do with blood makes me sick) and having to chase down whatever it is that she let go in the house.

Capt. Jack is a loudmouth! I swear one of his parents must have been a Siamese! He's now discovered that humans hide in the house so he sits on the doorstep and yowls until somebody pokes their head out to scream "SHUDDUP ya damn cat!" Then he does the "I'm so cute. Don't you wanna pick me up and cuddle me?" trill. I don't think he'll ever kill anything! He keeps telling the prey he's coming.

I'd read up on blue tongues a few years ago, and then gave up on getting one any time soon. I'd forgotten most of the specifics, but I still have the book and there's a forum with a fabulous care sheet that I joined back then, so in terms of the care, it's been just a bit of brushing up.
spending time with a lizard is always different from reading about them
in terms of general disposition, this one seems pretty true to the descriptions - pretty unflappable; burrows a lot; a bit more alert and active than I had expected; with an eating style like a trash compactor

Picked up a pair of bearded dragons, very thin/dehydrated/off colored because of poor husbandry of the last owner. Few days in my care coloring up nice, they are Orange hypo pastels, rehabbing then off they go to a new home.
However, I got rid of all of my snakes personally, I had only lizards, unless you count the 7 foot northern pine that my girlfriend keeps at her house and we kinda share... Anyway, was browsing craigslist for snakes (I get super cheap ones, resell, hey economy sucks and im jobless ;) ) and I found a decent looking link, texted the guy for pics, turns out he was trying to unload an over 6 foot snow bull for $50, talked him down to $40, but either way was a hell of a deal, he's a gorgeous animal and I've been wanting one since mine passed away.

My first loves are canine. Moved to the country 1 year ago and had two older rescue dogs, justified getting the first breeder bought pup in 20 years by saying "well he will protect the other pets from predatory coyotes and such in the country".
Got more canine machismo than I expected! One year old 100 lb Anatolian raised on a farm guarding sheep. Turns out yeah, he sure will protect us against coyotes, nere-do-well humans, and anything else that could threaten but has also become the apex predator regarding my two older male dogs and the cat. LOL. Good times, separating the canines permanently. Plus the threat display (over stolen frozen chicken off the counter) will darn near give you a heart attack, they may love their people but they won't give up anything that is "theirs".
Awesome canine; hard headed/sweet/difficult/loving/demanding and I feel so blessed to have him in my life.

What I need is some awesome sallies like many of you guys find in your part of the country. Ours are boring, ugly, and can only live if I keep them in a fridge.
The only other thing around here I could keep in a viv without refrigeration would be rough skinned newts and bullfrogs. That's about my only option unless I want to buy whites treefrogs or firebelly toads but I dont want those either. I want some pretty marbled or spotted sallies or something similar. Yeah, it is. It's funny, I always find them in the most unlikely places. Like a patch of woods surrounded by urban development, miles from water. I don't get it.

Your not where I am Chantel. You're in a different ecoprovince. Naturally the sallies you find there will not necessarily be the ones I find here. There's nothing here but ugly brown ones or brown and orange newts. There's just nothing here that looks good, does well in captivity, and can be kept without refrigeration. I have doubts that your "stunning little guys" would do well in anything but a plastic tub stuck in a fridge. No fun in that.
What about Ensatina salamanders can you keep them because they come in nice colors.
I have no idea. There is nothing here with "nice colors" and like I said, most sallies around here cannot be kept successfully unless it's in a fridge. If there are Ensatina's around here (there are none that I have ever found) then you can almost count on them being the plain brown variety. Our sallies SUCK around here. I kept rough skinned newts before and they make pretty good aquarium or viv inhabitants but already been there, done those. Anything else around here is insignificant, tiny, unimpressive, and difficult to keep. The Dicamptodon's are alright, and easy to keep, but not pretty, and illegal to collect.

I like "ugly" brown sallies. I like "ugly" brown or grey snakes that are really, really plain to most people. I love the northwesterns here because they are usually a uniform brown or black, with an orange or white stripe and that's it. Everyone thinks they're ugly, they're the most beautiful to me.
The salamanders we saw here were also brown, but as a kid I went for the brightly coloured ones. We also had some mudfrogs (as our neighborhood called them) that were just plain brown and I loved those little guys. They looked kind of like a dart frog, but with different shades of brown in them. And, the salamanders we caught here only came out when it was hot. Never once had I seen them on cool days. Trust me, I was a serious outdoorsy kid who liked playing in the mud and looking for bugs and other creepy crawly, scaly, slimy things to show my mom.

Well If I'm going to have sallies in a water/land viv, I want large colorful ones. If I wanted poop brown, I'd just put a turd in there. Anyway, I like marbled and spotted sallies and I think they would do well in such a setup. I just can't get them here.

Richard, like I tell my kids, can you get the food to feed them? I know many salamanders eat things like spiders and flies and such. We have the king spotted salamanders here, as well as the little blue ones and newts. We will catch them and then release because we can't feed them properly. They like to live near the stream banks, under the rocks.
I won't keep them cause I won't have spiders and such in the house. We had a spring peeper a few years ago, for a night. Not only was that little bugger LOUD but he also had the same menu. So we let him go back into the pond area.
If you decide to get one, let me know how you make out!

I'm sorry to say it looks like I'm losing Thumbilina. She went limp and unresponsive at 4:30am pacific today and she's been at the animal hospital ever since. They've ran every test they can think of to the tune of $1200 or so and they still don't have the slightest clue what is wrong with her. She's completely limp, can't stand up or even look at you, and just barks every now and then(but not a normal bark) but doesn't respond, doesn't acknowledge anything or anyone. She's in some sort of coma. She's 10 years old. Her vitals are good, all tests are normal, everyone is completely stumped. All I know is we're running out of tests and I'm running out of credit.:(
It might be a few days before I can get back to all the people I've been having dialogue with in PM's so bear with me. I'm not just blowing you all off. Gotta thing going on here.

They do really well in captivity feeding on worms and medium crickets you just set up the viv about six inches of peat moss and put some plants in and a layer of sphagnum moss on top it is best to put a little gravel on the bottom for drainage. Keep it damp but not too wet and mist once a day with natural spring water. You need to make sure there is plenty of ventilation so it don't mold inside. You can also put a log in for him to hide under. They make awesome pets. Spotteds and marbles are in the mole salamnder family and they spend most of their time underground they take to the water for mating.

Thumbilina didn't make it but I'm not really surprised. I was told last night that she likely had brain damage beyond recovery when we brought her in. We still don't know why, and we still don't know what caused her sudden unexpected passing. It's bad enough losing her so suddenly but the not knowing what happened is killing me.

Thanks everyone. She had been acting a little strangely, drinking and urinating excessively for the past couple of months with some weight loss and dehydration but nothing that seemed to be life threatening or anything that would make her suffer. Vet visits and plenty of tests couldn't find anything wrong.
Other than that, she didn't suffer. She didn't seem to be in pain or discomfort, she was eating well, still playing, still active up to and including the night before I had to take her in. It appears that something did happen very suddenly as she slept. From that point on, I really don't think she was consciously aware of anything. I stopped short of paying a few hundred more for a necropsy but with other evidence, (some bruising) the vet does seem to think it was possibly a sudden aneurysm or clot to her brain so she didn't suffer.
I am heartbroken. I never expected the mild symptoms she's been having would lead to her death and I sure has heck wasn't expecting her to die so soon. My other poms always lived to be 15 or 16 and I knew when it was their time. I had plenty of warning with them. This was unexpected. She was only 10 and full of life. I'll miss her terribly.:(

Thank you for letting us know. I have never really known how to take care of them properly and last I looked for a salamander (3 years ago) it was the spider/flies for dinner on the menu, which was not going to happen.
This makes it much easier to have one as a pet. They are quite colorful and the spotted ones are large enough so you are not afraid of hurting them.
Thank you, once again.

If they don't have gills (are frog or toad tadpoles) they do just fine on goldfish flake food. Crush it up fine and sink it to the bottom. Do that until the entire bottom is coated with food. It will be gone, and converted to poop in a matter of hours depending on how many you have. They eat 24/7. Many tadpoles can live in shallow standing water, but do much better if it's gently oxygenated with an air stone. I've raised a lot of different kinds. They grow super fast and are very easy. In a pinch, mashed boiled potatoes and boiled (until mush) lettuce will do. Keep their water cool as possible. Warm water/oxygen poor water causes them to metamorphosis too early, resulting in very small, weak froglets.

You should feed them FLAKE food. Crushed fine and sunk. The beta food would be great for larval salamanders but frog larvae are not strictly carnivorous like salamander larvae are.

I second what Richard said about flake food and boiled greens. They both work very well. pellets aren't going to do much unless they suddenly change from herbivores to carnivores (which has been documented). It also helps to know what level feeder it is, this is where knowing what kind it is really helps. Different tadpoles feed at top, mid, or bottom levels respectively. The easiest way to adjust this is by changing the overall depth of the tank you have them in They can adapt however if you know and provide the appropriate level to begin with the better off they are when it comes time to change into froglets.

I've had Bert since June 2, 2009 (a very special day :D). When I found him crossing the street, his shell was about the size of a silver dollar, now his shell is about as long as a paper dollar. He's just coming out of brumation now so he'll be back to eating and growing in no time.

Eh, I still don't prefer snakes over the lizards, however, generally, people buy more snakes than lizards, it's just a better market to get into, so I actually have 15 snakes of my own right now, almost all of them are for sale, the red above just happens to be a female, so my girlfriend will keep it to breed with her male.

I'm currently working with only 3 species, the rest are imported and whatnot. I'm working on breeding bullsnakes, ball pythons, and corns. The first because I enjoy the species being large and obnoxious and the fact I have the beautiful snow above to produce some double hets. Balls and corns because they are so popular as starter pets and there is actually a market for them.

She's doing great. Very docile and easy to handle. She lives with a group of female radixes. They all hangout together and get alone.
She's my blind(no eyes) Fox snake. She was brought to me since the only other options for her were to be released or euthanized.
I felt both those options were stupid.
She'll live with us for the rest of her life.

Releasing/enthusing would have been stupid. Good for you. Beautiful snake. Fox snakes are awesome.

With all this snake has been put through at the hands of people I felt I owed her a good rest of life.

Awesome. Lots bigger than the five-lined skinks under our porch:D

Definitely. You've seriously never seen a full grown blue tongued skink? Very popular (and rather spendy) pet. Extremely intelligent lizards too. One the smartest and tamest lizards out there. Some even recognize and respond to as much human speech as a dog would. This is one reptile that knows it's name.;) Not that I would recommend it, but it's the kind of lizard that wouldn't mind riding your shoulder all day while you're cruising around on your Harley or walking around town/the beach.
