Found this little guy on my front door this afternoon. He had a tick problem as you can see in the picture. Word must have gotten out that I am offering a safe home for reptiles.
I didn't have any tweezers and it took me a good half hour to get em off using a knife and a fingure nail. Luckily the brave little fella seemed to understand that I was trying to help and cooperated nicely. May keep him for a while, just to make sure he recovers of course.

Plestiodon(Eumeces) fasciatus. If you're sure it's a five-lined skink.

Beautiful skink. I found that they really like small running spiders or other soft insects with lots of movement. They like to chase their food. If you're keeping him, don't forget to provide moist places with moss, leaves, and plenty of cover.
I got rid of mites and ticks on them by rubbing them with a cat flea collar and it apparently didn't harm the lizard. I also placed pieces of the collar in their enclosure, inside a small container with tiny holes in it. A couple of months later, the ticks were all gone and never returned.
The name Five-lined Skink can refer to different species of skinks: Plestiodon fasciatus, the Eastern Red-headed Skink of North America and Western skinks.
Mine were the western version caught in the mountains of NE California.
If your skink doesn't have 5 stripes, it's probably a different but closely related skink. I like them. It's fun to put a fluttering moth in their enclosure and watch their antics as they try to catch it.
I'm pretty sure you have a Eumeces tetragrammus there. (4 lined skink)

You could be right I will count the lines when I get home. :) I saw a picture of the five lined skink online and it looked exactly like it (ie yellow lines blue tail) didn't realize that there was a four lined variety as well. :o
I will have the collar thing next time (i tried vegetable oil based on someones post on this site but it didn't work), it sure was a pain to try to get them off by hand when dealing with ticks the size of a pinhead and a fragile little skink. I was just going to keep on some paper towels for now, with a few things to hide under. Not sure how much of a danger infection poses at this point but I was trying to keep the enclosure as clean as possible.

The T.radix Ranch had a first occur this morning. A baby Fox Snake hatched out. The mother of this baby was brought to me by another Deputy. 2 days after she arrived she laid a clutch of eggs. This gave me a chance to use my new Father's Day gift from my kids. The eggs started off looking pretty good but slowly the ones on the outside started changing colors and drying out. I kept a close eye on the humidity and so I don't think it was anything I did(hope not). Only 2 eggs still looked viable so I was hoping we'd get at least a couple new babies. I still think we might see another snake soon.

*Update*
Shy is still standing by her name. She's hold up in the shell. I've peeled away a little more shell and checked on her.
She appears to be fine but reluctant to make her appearance to the world.
I'm keeping a moist paper towel over the egg to keep her hydrated. I can pulled the shell back and get a good look at her/his face.
If she's not out by the end of the day, than I will have to evict her from her old home and introduce her to her new one.
*Updated update*:D
As I was typing the first update she decided to join the world. I'll try to get some better photos today.

After three years of blood, sweat and tears, I have finally found an eastern milksnake!!! It was under a sheet of tin. Anyhow, I thought I'd post pictures, and say thanks to everybody who has given me advice at some point or another.
The snake has an injury on its tail and I'm applying neosporin. Is there anything else I should do?
I just got the snake a couple days ago, so I know it will take some time to settle down. I heard that milksnakes are very difficult to feed in captivity. Does anybody have any advice? Since this snake is wild-caught I'm willing to feed it amphibians to get it started.

I am gonna have to move this thread into the "other pets" thread. Nothing against you or your lovely new milk! Just what we do :o
anyways, I have never had trouble getting an eastern milk to eat. In fact all of the ones I have ever housed were all from the wild and all ate f/t rodents as their first meal. The albino my mom caught in our yard is eating like a horse... chowing down on f/t pinks! Give the snake plenty of places to hide. nice and low to the ground. Leave a f/t rodent underneath the snake's favorite hiding place after she settles in for a bit. That's how I started any of the ones I've ever cared for. Heck my boyfriend's dad brought me a juvenile that had some nasty scabbed over wounds all over him, looked as if he were attacked by a pecking bird.... even he desperately tried to eat a pinky right out of my hands. He couldn't though... something wasn't right and he seemed unable to actually pick the thing up and eat it... and he didn't make it. good luck with her! If she refuses to eat, make sure you set her free early enough for her to go find a place to brumate!

I think we've created a monster(nice one) in the house. Tank likes to catch some sleep while she's out of the container. I am so amazed her her docile attitude towards the entire family. She is a one-of-a-kind turtle.
The second photo on the left clearly shows a content sleeping turtle.
Curved neck, one leg along the neck and the other pushed back.

Injury doesn't look too bad. Probably got bit by a protective mother rodent as her babies were being eaten. Give that snake plenty of hides, as has already been mentioned, and don't disturb it too much. Doesn't hurt to have some moist areas/hides too.
I've had a few garters that were "jittery" and shy about eating. Putting a pinky or piece of fish in their favorite hide and leaving them alone for a few hours sometimes works and get's them to eat.
A milk snake like yours should be fed pinkies. Try thawing and moistening one for her, then back off an give her plenty of privacy. You should probably wait a week or even two weeks before trying this.

Do they get much bigger than he is now? He's coiled up in a drink lid about the size of a Gatorade cap. When I found him at the end of October he still had the little belly slit so I'm guessing he just came out of his mom/egg.

Forgot to add that when my husband fed him last night(I can't bear to touch the bugs right now) he stayed sitting in the food dish and just opened his mouth as soon as the lid came off his tank. Didn't even move to come get the worm, waited until it was pretty much placed in his open mouth. He has us whipped.

Yeah, lizards are awesome but I kinda got burned out on them since I bred them (sceloporus ssp) for about 10 years. I did enjoy it, but much higher maintenance (and much bigger tanks and expensive equipment) than snakes and I sure love my garters!
Some other people's pics of the lizard species I used to breed and sell to pet stores:
Clark's Spiny lizard:

And one more...
Sagebrush lizard (sceloporus graciosus)
http://www.reptilesofaz.org/Graphics/Lizards/SCEGRA-M-08b.jpg
I had all those. Two females and a male require a minimum 55 gallon long tank and special high-UV lighting and daily feeding of live insects. I had many successful clutches that hatched and thrived. Unfortunately, most people can't even manage to keep them alive, let alone breed them. My only buyers were pet stores. Any that didn't sell, unfortunately sat there and ended up dying 'cause they just didn't care for them properly. That's one of the reasons I just couldn't continue doing it.
I ended up taking all my breeder adults with me on a trip to CA and I released them in appropriate habitat where others of their kind could be seen.

ConcinusMan
08-19-2010, 01:39 AM
Yeah, Male fence lizards in some areas can appear, even from above, to be very beautiful and blue/purple. They can even suddenly appear to change color when a food item presents itself, or another male wanders into his territory. It's so awesome to find a dominant male defending his territory. Of course, they flee and hide. Sit still for a while and he'll come back out, sit on his rock "throne" and give quite a display for the females. Very challenging to maintain in captivity but also very rewarding.
The problem in captivity is the need for lots of UVA AND UVB, a lot of room, and a constant need for live insects. They won't drink from a water dish so forget about that. After several weeks of hot dry weather, they will only drink if you drip water onto a flat rock for example, then they will lick it off.
Not so much of a challenge to "brumate" or provide a winter period, followed by a "spring" and getting them to breed. Lost quite a few females because when it's time for egg laying, they are very picky. Some die if they don't find a site deep enough, warm enough, or just right. If they can't find a suitable egg laying burrow (they often dig several holes to the point of exhaustion) they get egg bound and die.:(
Thankfully, I only lost very few females this way.
The problem often is, the babies housed together grow up, reach sexual maturity, and if you have 3 males in a small area, the stress alone can kill them. males are very territorial, but are also the most beautiful.

08-19-2010, 03:54 AM
Wow I never knew that about them. I used to ant one, along with dozens of other reptiles, but I'll stick to garters... and when I move in with my boyfriend he wants a ball python or 2, a couple tegu's (which I also like) and some geckos. I have a feeling we wouldn't even have a bedroom. Everything would be reptile tanks haha.

ConcinusMan
08-19-2010, 03:32 PM
Yeah croc would be a little over the top. Heck, I think 20 foot pythons are a bit ridiculous. Not too many responsible owners out there. One might even argue that owning a croc is irresponsible in and of itself so there would be no such thing as responsible keepers.

He wanted to put it on a harness and walk it around the neighborhood for its exercise. Lol. It'd be cool, but we'd need a little swimming pool for it. Got a great deal on this guy & his setup off craigslist a few days ago. Never see these in Idaho & this guy is even the locality I like the best! (I'm not actually positive what the locality is, there are about 5 that could be right) He doesn't have a name yet. Thinking either Sebastian or Quinn. These were taken in the car on the way back from picking him up.

ConcinusMan

Your vet wouldn't necessarily be misleading you in that matter. Both North American boas are quite sedentary and secretive. Not much interaction to be had. They often go months without moving or feeding so yeah, I would agree. They are boring.

It depends on what you're after. While I prefer my feisty snakes, I do have a soft spot for some of my more sedentary stuff too & can understand how some folks prefer the less active end. I plan on hopefully getting some Rubber Boas one of these days. I do have some scaly slugs that I enjoy though that include Kenyans & Rough Scaled sand boas

Actually, the mellow personality was why I wanted a Rosy. Love the garters & corns but you have to pay a lot of attention to them when you are handling them. I'd babysat a baby Ball python for a few months & really loved his temperament, but I didn't want a snake that got that big. So a desert Rosy is perfect, the temperament I want & he is unlikely to get bigger than 2'.
ConcinusMan
09-02-2010, 12:29 PM
2? I don't know about desert rosies but I used to catch coastal rosies in San Diego county that were around 4 feet.

Coastal rosys are the biggest & do often get to 4', but most of the others stay around 2' to 3', depending on locale. Males are usually smaller, as well.

Tank doesn't mind the camera. She's a very curious turtle and smells everything. The kids are always taking thing to her to smell. She also chased the male out of the living room the other day. She's very territorial with him but doesn't seem to mind the dog. The male on the other hand goes after our dog. The dog just jumps on to the couch.

Sexing Tank I felt was pretty easy since her cloaca doesn't extend very far past the shell. Compared to the male I already have it was easy to see Tank was a female.
Tank on the other hand has been showing signs of being a male. First, Tank would show aggression towards the other turtle. Chasing him out of the living room. Tank is also aggressive to her own reflection, chasing it across the room. During these incidents Tank sways her head back and forth and opens and closes her mouth. These are all male aggression indicators.
I took Tank to Des Moines to have a snapping turtle expert sex her. I was told that from the view of the cloaca it was a female but they also mentioned that the shell looked male and that Tank also had very large front paws which is indicative of male snapping turtles.
My family had settles on Tank as being our little Princess.
All has changed as Tank flashed his male tool the other night. So, now it's been decided that out Princess is actually a Prince.
My expert in Des Moines thinks Tank is still immature and that the cloaca will move outward as he grows. He also said this is a good indicator that Tank is going to be a large turtle.
In any event Tank is welcome in our home for the rest of his life. Since Tank will probably outlive me I started discussing with my kids about our responsibility to Tanks future. Always making sure he is in a safe situation.
Tank continues to captivate my family and is the magnet in the living room. Tank spends on average 20 hours a day out of his enclosure. Much of that time is sleeping but he does spend time with the kids at night. He'll sit by them while they do homework and he seems to like climbing on them, then sitting there. He's also very curious about thing, smelling any new items he comes across.
Long live Prince Tank.:D

If you are on the gallery page just click on the upload photo button. Then browse to where your photo is at. Double click the photo and then the upload button.
After you have it uploaded, double click your photo, then hit the "Copy to clipboard" button.
Then you can go to the thread you want the photo in and paste it in.
I hope this helps.
Just a note, check the properties of your photo:
Maximum File Size:2048k file size limit.

Personally, I prefer the method you tried because you only have to upload a photo once for posting to multiple forums and/or posts. here's how: http://www.thamnophis.com/forum/garter-snake-lounge/7794-how-insert-images-directly-hotlink-into-your-posts.html
BTW, you obviously have to upload the photo from your computer to somewhere on the web before you have a URL to enter in the box. It's just that the photo will appear full sized in your post, even if the actual file is located on another site or server.
If that's confusing then you can always scroll down.

Hey Derek, That photo you just tried to post is an invalid URL.
The absolute simplest way to include photo is to just click the gallery tab at the top of this page and follow the instructions.
The admin of this site has provided a wonderful photo gallery feature that is free for any member to use, and unlike photo bucket or other services, you are ensured your photo will display for the life of the forum.
all too many times people will use photobucket and then let the photobucket account go dormant causing the pictures to no longer display.
That gallery is awesome and free, give it a try, it even automatically generates the line of code required to insert your pictures into your posts. ;)

He says he's uploaded photos but where are they? good luck find them. Now, if you could just click his username and choose something like "view brains albums" that would be the intuitive thing to do, but noooo... can't make it that easy. You have to go to the gallery, and painstakingly go through a list of users... and... and pray you get lucky... it's a pain. Heck, it's not any easier to find my own dang albums.
Well, we're off topic anyway.

Now normally I would take it home and release it in a more wild place than the suburban vet hospital but we just had our first few hard freezes so I'm gonna try wintering the little guy at my place. Its definitely NOT a garter. I'm 90% sure its a baby black rat snake but what do you guys think? ( I can't stand black snakes! The ones I have run into are far too grumpy! )

You would be correct in yor assumption, Black Rat Snake!

It's been my experience that a snake that is constantly looking for a way out, is not comfortable in it's enclosure under the current conditions.;) This activity can result in injured snouts.:(
My snakes, when it's that time of year and they're looking for a place to brumate, do not go up. They root around on the bottom looking for a way underground.;)

Dang, if that's a Pueblan, it sure has wide red bands. The big girl I adopted last year traded away later to make room for concinnus had bands a bit different. If any were wider than the rest, they were the white bands. I'm not very sure yours is a pure pueblan to be honest. It's just not typical of any I've seen and milk snake breeders do have a habit of not keeping their lines pure to region.
Her name is Jewels and she was over 4 feet long, beautiful, and real PITA so I traded her for a 55 gallon long tank.

Umm... as far as I know, an apricot pueblan is just like a normal except the white bands are orange instead. That is not the case with the snake you are showing us, but that's definitely a pueblan. Quite possibly the "dirtiest" one I've ever seen! Very unusual indeed. The red bands have been bred out almost entirely. Have you seen the "Halloween" pueblans? It's an apricot (orange instead of white bands) and the red bands have bred almost entirely out. Amazing looking.
http://www.brazosvalleyreptiles.com/male-halloween.jpeg
http://www.brazosvalleyreptiles.com/fml-halloween.jpeg
They've been bred from apricots which look like this:
http://www.sareptiles.co.za/gallery/albums/userpics/10029/SA400391.JPG
I'll say it again Wayne, I just don't think that first one you showed is a pueblan. It was probably outcrossed to another type of mexican milk at some point in it's bloodlines.

11-23-2010, 11:52 AM
Well, not quite. Even in the wild pueblans, you have a few apricots and the "dirtyness" varies a bit. Then you have CB snakes where they are breeding out the red bands but that's about it. It's the pattern of that first one that just doesn't quite fit to be a pueblan and sometimes that's the only difference between some of the various mexican subspecies. He looks closer to a annulata or celaenops. Pueblans are distinct in that generally speaking, the bands have very straight edges and the red bands aren't significantly wider than the rest of the colors. If anything, the red takes a back seat to the rest of the colors even in wild-type pueblans. See what I mean? this one is very distinctively pueblan no doubt:
http://www.vmsherp.com/images/Past/Pueblan.jpg
Still, that's a beautiful milk and it's not really considered frowned upon (except by some "purists" out there) to cross similar milk subspecies like it would be if we were crossing T. sirtalis subspecies. Heck, people are crossing these mexican milk subspecies with kings and corns even. Here's an apricot pueblan X brooks king:
http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n311/vaggieskabs661/pueblanxbrooks.jpg
I'll bet your big dirty one is a retired breeder but they are usually selected to be cleaner rather than dirty but who knows, he might have produced very clean, low red offspring and he could be het for apricot which would be ideal for producing halloween pueblans.

I'm not really into corns, I dont know why. Might have something to do with the fact that thousands are sold locally every year, but very few actually get good homes. There's so many abandoned and rescued corns around here it makes me sick and yet everyone keeps breeding them. You'll have a hard time giving away an okeetee around here. They're just considered "normal". Lavenders, albinos, and candy corns are more popular. I guess the good thing about that is you don't have to buy them at all. There's plenty of adults to be had for free. For example, a childhood friend of mine owns a pet store and stables. Someone couldn't care for their corn anymore and simply gave her one. It was a magnificent lavender like this one. It had the most awesome blue eyes I've ever seen. Yes, BLUE eyes on a snake!

Mine is a male and I would love to find a female and hopefully I will be able to afford her when I find her. Bosco was wild caught as a baby. He is fine to hold but is shy in the cage. I have to feed him last on feeding day so I don't spook him into not eating by moving around in front of his cage. From what I have read this is atypical of the cribos.

Oh, and I thought of something regarding the blue eye statement. I didn't mean the snake was going into shed. It had bright "blueberry" blue eyes. And I mean, that was the color of the iris. It was so cool.

It probably is atypical then. Both these cribos that Nate had acted like inquisitive garters when you approached their enclosure. They came out to greet us. Like I said, he hatched out quite a few babies in early summer and probably still has some. I wouldn't mind having a cribo at all but I don't have that kind of room. Their enclosures were huge.

I've never seen growth rings on an aquatic turtle... But here's what they look like on a Russian tortoise...
http://i75.photobucket.com/albums/i307/DinkellaBanzai/Lizards/Zoom/2010-02-19Zoom_16.jpg
Each bumpy ridge on the individual scutes (especially visible here on the dorsal (spine) and coastal (side--between the dorsals and the marginals [edge of the shell]) scutes) is a growth ring. Each is a different width and level of "bumpiness," according to how fast the tort grew during that period and how much humidity it was given access to during the growth period.
Between the coastals and the marginals (along the edge of the shell), especially toward the back where, in this picture, it's shaded, you can see a very light beige-colored growth ring immediately between the scutes. This is the area of new growth--indeed, where the "plates" of the shell come together like where ConcinnusMan (sorry, don't know your name!) speculated growth occurs.
Honestly, I'm so used to tortoises and land-dwelling turtles that I didn't recognize your snapper's growth ring as such. Very neat to know how different it looks on an aquatic turtle!

Kenny's cute! Does he have any issues burying in the pellet-type substrate? In any case, it's nice to see another person with "sand" boas who doesn't use sand!
Concinnusman, I don't know why Steve doesn't use it, but I can tell you why many keepers choose not to. Sand is, frankly, a bad substrate for any snake in captivity. As well, it's been found lately that most species of "sand" boa don't naturally dwell in sand landscapes in the wild. You can find a good explanation on Kingsnake.com's Sand Boa Page (sorry, can't hotlink atm!).
ConcinusMan
12-12-2010, 01:23 AM
Thank you for that. I do realize that, and that's why I was just teasing. I mean, I find garter snakes in mud, dirt, water, wet grass and damp rotting wood in damp mossy forests, but I sure as heck wouldn't keep them on that stuff in captivity.
Too many people try to re-create indoors in an enclosed environment, what they see as "natural habitat". That's a big mistake in many cases.
Still, with a sand boa, I would be tempted to have at least part of the enclosure be a sandy substrate or other somewhat fine particulate. Not saying it's necessary by any means though.
Maybe some of this:
Zoo Med Repti - Sand Substrate - Desert White 25LB (SW-25) (http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=reptile+sand&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=11058818774934952885&ei=lXcETff1OentnQfVp6XlDQ&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=image&resnum=1&ved=0CCoQ8gIwAA#)
I used this stuff for lizards that live in rocky forested areas or hardpan with cacti - Lizards that don't even live in sandy deserts. Just so happened that they did very well. Better than using a pebbly substrate like where they are found. They liked to dig in and spend the night in the sand. I guess my point is, I realize what works for them outside, isn't necessarily what's best inside. Sand worked out better for me when the animals didn't even live in sandy places. I'm sure that the opposite can happen. A sandy substrate could be far less than ideal even for animals found living in sand dunes. It happens.
infernalis
12-12-2010, 01:31 AM
Before I really knew what I was doing, I kept a couple snakes on dirt mixed with sand.
They survived it, they spent the final years on decent substrate, they thrived and grew old.
I still would never repeat it though.

Well I haven't been on the board a lot because I have a mini miracle to tell you guys....
Last Christmas I pet-sat this beautiful dog and loved having her here! She brought so much joy that Christmas and we definitely had a special connection!

Fast forward through Winter and Spring...and I STILL missed "my" girl. And then I learned her owners couldn't keep her and she was being rehomed. :(
Summer and fall passed and I finally had the courage to email her owners and ask where she had ended up. It was way to hard to do before, because it made me incredibly sad to think she was with someone else. But I received a happy email back from her original owners saying she was was with a man who wanted a Basenji....and they now thought she was a Basenji mix.
After that email I felt no comfort. I should have been happy or at least relieved she she was in a good place, but I didn't!
I had been searching for months to adopt a dog, and had always been looking for a Whippet mix, which was the breeds we originally thought Phoebe was. But after that email I typed in "Basenji" and pressed search.
This was my FIRST result on a long list of dogs that popped up:

It was "Ruby" at an Animal Control 1 hr from my house, and 8 hours from where I now live in Ontario. She was described as an anxious, dog/kid unfriendly mutt who needed lots of attention and exercise...and she was a "stray".. not the most appealing description, but she had an UNCANNY resemblance to Phoebe!
I ask friends what they thought of the photos, emailed the animal control a few times and called like crazy over a two day period until I finally got a confirmation.....they thought it was a match! :p
I got that news at midnight on a thursday night...and by Friday morning I was in the car, driving from Ontario straight to the middle of nowhere (the animal control was really in a dark, wooded area)
Was it really my Phoebe? Or just Ruby? I still DIDN'T know what to make of all of this. Who was lying?
WELL .... when I arrived they brought out a much skinnier, scared, dog missing fur and raw paws. It was a stark difference from the friendly, outgoing, and well-fed pooch I had pet-sat nearly a year before. But it was Phoebe! And I adopted her on the spot!!

Sleeping or awake Tank doesn't seem to mind the attention.
Visitors to the T.radix Ranch meet Tank first before any tour of the snakes. Some people jump back when I get him out. They are shocked that I pick him up without gloves.
Within a few minutes most ask if they can hold him. I always explain to them that Tank is the exception to the rule when it comes to snapping turtles.

That is a shame. They are a wonderful turtle. I have 3. Two are common acting and then there's Tank.

Yea, it sucks...... utah is too picky. I do get to check out a couple regular and alligator snappers at the Reptile Rescue I work with...he has permits since he is also an educational facility also...we do classes all over utah.

I'll start incorporating Tank into my presentation next year.
He should be a big hit with the kids.

My boyfriend calls most turtles the grandfathers of the animal kingdom because a lot of them look kind of old. :D

Tank totally rocks
our Stumps is aspiring to be a snapper, I think. And he's fast. Can you imagine him going for your finger or toe?

Thanks....your dog is too cute! My dog, Kaela, is dying...and it's been really hard on me. I am trying to determine when I should put her to sleep. She seems really bad sometimes, and I feel like I shouldn't allow her to suffer simply because I am attached. But then she perks up and I don't want to put her to sleep if she still has some good days left in her. Having pets is such a wonderful experience, but it is so difficult when you lose them.

I was where you are at 2 years ago.
If you look at my avatar you will see my old girl Alex. She was going on 17 when I had her put down. She was my best friend and is missed daily.
Kaela will let you know when it's time.
My prayers are with you in this very dificult time in your life.

We went through the same thing about five years ago with my mom's poodle and again about 2 years ago with our Pom. Deciding when it's time is an incredibly hard decision. My thoughts are with you!

Don't remind me.:( Rufus is 10 yrs old and I also have his sister, 10. I have 4 poms. His mom and her sister are 12. In the past, I lost my poms at 14-15 years old.:( I had to put them down. I couldn't stand to watch them suffer any longer. Hardest thing I ever did. I could swear that when I dropped "baby" off to say goodbye, she had a look of gratitude that I can't explain. It's like she knew what was coming and was OK with it. She was in a lot of pain.
I know what you're going through.
