I went to the Havre De Grace reptile show this past weekend and came home with another slither. I've wanted a Saharan sand boa for some time but I rarely find any that are captive bred. Well, I finally got one. And yes, he's wild caught (UGH!) but from several years ago. He was the healthiest looking Saharan at the show. ( And some of the Saharans were kinda rough looking! EEEEP! ) He's already well adjusted to captivity and has a great disposition. ( I just gotta get him off LIVE food! )

I gotta take him to the most wonderful herp vet to clear him. Think I'll do that next week. I've dubbed him "Smoothie". Pics to follow.

I wanted to share some pics of my scaled babies. I don't yet have a garter, I'm hoping that will change this year (wink wink to anyone expecting garter babies), but here they are. If anyone is familiar with kingsnake morphs could you give your opinion on what color my guy is..his morph has to have a name..not just cali king lol. My three year old god son has named him Chocolate Milk and well that pretty much describes his color.

Looks like a hypomelanistic to me. (If a ca king has pink/red eyes and purple, or white and yellow it's really just an albino, sometimes also called "lavender" Since yours would have been a normal black and white phase, it doesn't quite look purple. If a normally brown and yellow king has reduced melanin (not completely absent) AND somewhat dark eyes, it's hypomelanistic, or "hypomel", meaning, not quite albino, but close. the dark areas will look purple and the eyes dark. It's hard to tell from that photo though.

And that, makes very little sense whatsoever, doesn't it? I'll try to clarify:

We have 2 different "albino" (amelanistic) plains garters. The "Iowa strain " looks like this:

(you can see there are no dark pigments and very pink eyes)
http://gartersnakemorph.com/images/iowaalbinoplains.jpg

The "nebraska strain" (different gene affects the color. As you can see, there's still color there and the eyes are darker) If you ask me, by definition, is is NOT albino, but is really hypomelanistic. Hypo meaning "reduced" melanin. Think of it as "halfway there" albino.

http://www.donsgartersnakes.net/images/plainsalbinotiny.jpg

If your kingsnake completely lacked melanin those grey areas would be pinkish/purplish due to color from blood showing through, and his eyes would be very pink or red. Since the eyes are dark and there is gray there, the technical term would be "hypomelanistic" as opposed to "amelanistic"(albino) and would look more like the following picture. I have found albino kings in the wild (among a group that had just hatched) that also looked like this. The normally dark areas can look pink or more of a purple color:
http://pet.imageg.net/graphics/product_images/pPETS-6829387t400.jpg

As far as "morph" names go, the first person to prove the gene and and successfully produce offspring predictably can call them any darn thing he pleases based on overall appearance, not actual biological terms. So for now, I guess yours is "chocolate milk" Scott even produced a morph called "christmas albino". The name may, or may not stick. That's why I prefer to hear the true terms. Hypomelanistic for your snake, Amelanistic (Albino) in the above pic.

Even though she's not a garter I thought it would relate.
As you might remember I've been blessed to be the caretaker of a blind Fox snake(Elaphe vulpina). She lost her eyes to live food that turned on her. This was a complete failure and fault of the snakes owner.
Tonight I noticed she was finishing a shed so I thought I would assist her.
All she had left was her head. As I pulled the shed off I noticed what appeared to be a eye cap. Apparently when the eye socket healed it retained the ability to still shed. I thought it was pretty cool, so here you go.

Dude, I saw it. I held it. It was around 8 feet and it was a black milk snake. It was friggen huge. I didn't think they got that big either, until I saw it.

Kinda like this one, only bigger. Everyone also keeps saying Pueblan milks don't get over 3 feet. The one I recently parted with was 4 foot, 2 inches and she was only 6 years old.

Yup, that's a monster. I don't recall ever seeing one so "dirty" before. The one I had was such a b... well, let's just say she was a PITA and not very nice at all, so it was easy to part with her in trade for a 55 gallon tank for my garters!

Here's some pics of "Jewels" http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/showphoto.php?photo=7762

BTW, that "black rat snake" was not a rat snake. He had pics of the snake when it was younger and not all black, and pics as it grew up and turned black. Besides that, I know the difference. It was just an exceptionally huge black milk snake. Forget about the record. I keep hearing about age records for garters. I shattered "the record" with my last pair of concinnus so I know for a fact they can live longer than "the record" and I know that black milk snake was longer than "the record". Much longer.

I couldn't hardly believe it. I wish you could have seen that milk for yourself. It was quite impressive.

I have kept these for years, Got the husbandry down pretty good.

It's the serious lack of information that costs the lives of so many.

The vendors selling them are even clueless as to what they eat.

8 months age I was given a beautiful female Gray banded King snake. I named her Elvis. 3 months ago I moved her to a new enclosure and she escaped. I have searched and searched but could never find any signs of her. I feared she found away outside and did so.
After putting all my snake room snakes to bed I headed upstairs. 2 hours later I went back down stairs to do a security sweep on all my snakes.
I walked into the small snake room and turned on the light. Sitting on the floor was Elvis. She has lost some weight but look good. She took the longest drink I've ever seen a snake take. I even stopped her before she was done for fear she would have thrown-up.
I never thought I would see her again but now she's back home.
I've even got a little surprise for her. I now have a male GBK. I'm going to quarantine her for a few weeks and then get them together.

Great looking scorpion. What kind of life span do they have?

I had a scorpion just like that one that I found in San Diego. It lived about a year in captivity but it was already full size when I found it. Got stung by the sucker too. Talk about painful. OUCH!

That's Berber, my jungle carpet. She loves her skull a little too much for comfort. Gives me chills.

And here's my california kingsnake. Snapped that as soon as I got her home. She's the first snake I could get my wife to admit was actually beautiful.

UPDATE

Great news. She Pooped. She eating and pooping, now. It looks like her sabbatical from food wasn't too hard on her.

Now, Here's a question for you. Do you think it would be OK to try and breed her now. My thinking is this. Maybe that time she was gone was her brumation. Cold basement floor, no food or water to speak of. Now, the fact she is eating and pooping like a normal snake, makes me think she wasn't stress very much during her time away.
Thoughts please.

I couldn't sleep worrying about Elvis so I got up and thawed out some mice for her.
I think she's hungry.

I would keep feeding her for the next week or two and see if she goes into shed. If she does, it may be an indication that she is reacting to her sabbaticle as a cool down.

Awesome job Steve. Elvis is looking sooooo much better than when you first got her. Pretty much the same thing that happened when I got Jewels (Pueblan milk snake I no longer have). It's amazing what a difference proper care and good feeding can do for a snake in a short time. Just 4 months of feeding her properly, and the difference is like night and day. I see the same thing after you've had Elvis for a while. She's looking excellent. Burns healed up nicely.

I've had that feeling too sometimes. More so with large predatory birds, like hawks and eagles, than with sparrows and other birds. To me, the sense that they both seem prehistoric and ancient is what makes them so similar. Of course, they are both related to dinosaurs, so there is a definite linkage. :)

What do you mean "they both seem prehistoric and ancient is what makes them so similar" ??

Silly me, I always thought they were similar because they are similar.

"Like all other reptiles, birds have scales (feathers are produced by tissues similar to those that produce scales, and birds have scales on their feet). Also, birds lay eggs like other reptiles. The soft anatomy (musculature, brain, heart, and other organs) all are fairly similar. There are numerous skeletal resemblances between birds and other reptiles"

And it really doesn't matter what kind of bird it is. They all have close "dinosaur" matches in the fossil record.

Exactly! That's why I also said, "Of course, they are both related to dinosaurs, so there is a definite linkage."

I didn't mean to be confusing or contradictory:o, I was just speaking from an emotional stand-point rather than a scientific one. When I referred to "the sense that they are prehistoric," I was referring to a strange gut-feeling I experience whenever I see a reptile or bird. I really wish I could explain better.

I didn't know feathers and scales were from similar tissues! That's very interesting. - Thank you!:)

Really? Take a look at your fingernails, your hair, your scalp and skin flakes. Same stuff. Same stuff your snake sheds off every so often, and yes, same stuff feathers are made of. It's just a long-chain protein called keratin.;)

And yes, humans need to, and must shed their skin too, in order to grow. It's just that we do it in tiny flakes instead of all at once.;)

I think the confusion came from this statement made by steve: "P.S. Kale also will be breeding Peach faced Love bird early in the fall."

He never said those were lovebirds. In fact, he never said anything about what kind of bird is pictured. They are definitely cockatiels. The grey one appears to be a normal female, the other (I don't know what that morph is called) a male.

Sorry to butt in but my snake collection has expanded again. I was not supposed to bring home another snake when I went with a friend to a reptile show near me. I was just supposed to buy frozen mice. But this guy made me an offer I couldn't refuse and I came home with my first milk snake. I think I need a rack!

Anyway, here's "Viper" so named because I couldn't find a pic of his morph and hubby started making coral snake jokes. He's a central plains milk snake, very nice to handle with a voracious appetite for anything remotely rodent.

Nor have I, but apparently, not all indigos are "indigo". His female was the same color. Everything else fits though. Same face/neck markings, same body proportions, etc. Very calm, very nice snake, in spite of the fact that he felt warm. If any of my concinnus had felt that warm they would have been all wound up and ready to squirm and bolt.

I can't imagine a snake of this size and strength with a bad attitude. That would be something else. Not only is there no bad attitude, but they are just not high strung at all. Very calm and deliberate in their movements. Can't always say that with my garters, as sweet as they are, they can be a bit "squirly" compared to that indigo.

Today, when I passed by his enclosure he looked at me with a quick head movement. I knew he was ready to eat. 4 mice later he was semi full.
The other good news is that the rescued female Fox snake has started eating also. Things are looking well for her.

I'm sure it was the wrong word to use but he was really out of it. A far off look in his eye. Not really aware of his surroundings. Wouldn't eat.
I worried for him until I talked with a friend of mine that used to take care of these Bull snakes. He said the males go off food and concentrate on one thing in the Spring. He described it as "acting weird"

Normally, milk snakes would not belong on our forum...and yes, I am aware of that... but this isn't any old milksnake... it's an extremely important find that I think you guys need to see! I find this to be quite a significant find in MY OWN backyard. In MY woodpile where all my little wild garter buddies live! So here it is for you to behold!

I got a call today while at work from my mom. Nobody ever calls me at work. She wanted to tell me about this "pretty little red and white snake" she had just found. My first thought was, have I had anything albino escape? No... so then I thought... someone in my area must have lost their pet corn and now I will be stuck with it! The thought of a eastern milk barely crossed my mind, but I dismissed it because I never thought I could get that lucky. Well... I did. My mom actually did walk out into our yard, and pick up an albino eastern milksnake.

It is a hatchling, a little female, just days old! She crawled out of a little woodpile that is in our yard, it's old, with plywood and tarps and because many garter snakes have called it home for years we have decided to leave it for them. The middle of this woodpile has some moist, falling apart wood that is the most likely candidate for where the eggs were laid. I will be going through the pile tomorrow to see if I can locate any of her brothers and sisters. We live in a secluded area... there is really nowhere else coverage-wise for them to venture to except around my house.

Sorry, but these crappy indoor photos do her no real justice. Her saddles are a bright popping strawberry color.... and her base color is a pale yellowish cream. Then the parts that line the saddles that would normally be black are purplish, and upon closer imspection I realized that she has patches of dark pigmentation all over her... making her a paradox on top of it! Her eyes have red pupils with semi-dark irises similar to my t positive strains of garter snakes. This such a cool find... how did we get this lucky??? This is the third morph animal I have stumbled upon.. there was the hypo eastern garter snake, then the flame eastern, and now THIS?! This is incredible. Here are photos of "Candy" as I call her... not sure what we will do with her yet! I will take better photos of her in natural light tomorrow.

They want it... or they want to know about it... I spent ALL day yesterday being the spokesperson for a milksnake!!! I was offered 1.1 first generation babies from that piebald garter. I have turned that offer down... nor really looking to work with piebalds until visuals are produced!

It's currently eating finch eggs. They can eat surprisingly large eggs for their size & tend to binge and then not eat for a few weeks. It's how they work in nature as well, find a nest and raid it eating everything they can, then digest and eventually try to find another.

I am not trading for offspring of that pied. I am not really even interested in the pied garter.... let alone trading this prized gem away for two normal eastern babies.

PS why does this site mass lump topics together? I for one find it slightly confusing.
we lump all the non-garter topics together, so we can tease out all the thamnophis topics in detail - that's because it's a thamnophis forum
so if you have other animals they just don't get the attention of your garters here
even totally fabulous finds like Shannon's new milk are relegated to "other pet" status, and it's not so confusing, really
on the other hand, Steve can post a separate thread for every one of his 300+ radix, and we'll be fine with it - seriously. you know why? they're all thamnophis. Perhaps I shouldn't encourage him though, but that's another story.

The last two are mine, the big lineaticollis is sort of half mine & lives here. I feed and care for it but a buddy bought it & a huge female for us to breed.

I'm a big pituophis freak. My male Cape Gopher is one of the most docile snakes I have, while the two females (one of which is the last pic, the other below) are the most ill-tempered beasts I have ever kept. There are no "bluff strikes" they're out for blood and they get it, everytime lol. It's funny how they're polar opposites but a good example of the potential either way for these. I love them they're a lot of fun and some of my all-time favourites, but not for the feint of heart or those easily intimidated by a snake not only yelling at them, but also trying to eat their face.

Here's another of Tank. This is a very content snapping turtle. Spends a lot of time cruising the living room. If you are in her way she will simply crawl over you. If I'm sitting on the floor she will climb up to my shoulder and sit there. Maybe she thinks she's some kind of bird. Tank has no startle response with me or anyone else in the house, even the dog.
I love her facial features. I think she's a pretty turtle. I'm hoping someday to hatch some snappers on the Ranch.
I love my radixes but think turtles are fascinating.

Went by the local pond to try and net a couple young Painted Turtles. They stayed just out of net range.
While I was in a heavily sheltered area of the pond waiting for a turtle to surface I happened to look along shore and saw a head come out of the water. I did my best statue imitation and when the head went back under the water I scooped.
I came up with a rather nice young Snapping Turtle. The turtle seems to be in good shape. I removed some leeches and will de-worm in a few days.

That turtle really DOES look like that character! BTW when ARE snapping turtles in a good mood?????

I grew up surrounded by marshlands and "progging" for snapping turtles to make stew was what many of the locals did. There's a story in my family of a snapper progger going to the local bar after a particularly good day and daring one of the drunks to kiss the turtle he had just caught.

The guy speaks with a lisp now!;-)

I have a Common Snapper that is more docile than all the box turtles I've ever had. She(Tank) cruises the living room many times during the day. She climbs up on the kids and sits on their laps. She seems to enjoy having her neck rubbed and scratched. She's a little bigger than a saucer. Last year she was a hatchling.
She has very little if any startle response from any of us including the dog. I'm going to shoot some video of her one of these days and get it posted.
I also picked up another Common Snapper this weekend that seem very docile. It's a bigger male. Hoping to have a nice calm breeding pair someday.

Here's my Son and Tank. Tank climbed up onto the couch and onto my Son's chest.
She then decided to take a rest. This turtle could run off and stay way from us but has decided to be part of the family. We love her and hope she lives a good long life on the Ranch.

Incredible pics, Steve. I've never experienced a docile snapper. Love it.

A friendly snapper. I'm afraid I don't know what that is!

Look at that red hair! Is there a little Irish in your gene pool???

My Mom's a red-head, one of 3 daughters that were all red heads. When I was a teen-ager she was trying to set me up with every red haired boy she saw because she wanted red haired grandchildren. I ended up marrying a curly, blonde haired Ukranian and skipping the kids bit. Its more fun to borrow your friend's kids and warp their brains before returning them!:)

I always thought that blue eyes and red hair was a recessive gene, like our albino snakes, so mom must be "het" LoL.

My mother is blonde hair blue eyes originally (she's half cherokee) and my dad is brown eyes, black hair and half blackfoot. However, my mothers mother is a redhead, and my dads mother is a redhead. I ended up with red hair and hazel eyes.

Here are a few other photos from my turtle day on Sat.
This is a Common Snapping Turtle with Kyphosis(bowing of the spine)
The bottom photo is of a 120 pound Alligator Snapping Turtle. The photo doesn't do it justice. The head is 9 inches across. This is one massive turtle.
My friend Mark and his wife do turtle rescues. The alligator snapper was rescued from a turtle butchery. It's gained about 40 lbs since Mark obtained it.

I have to share what happened to one of our more high maintenance pets this week.

As some of you know, we have 3 horses. Back in 2008 we bought this gangly, 2yr old Haflinger gelding we nicknamed iNDee. ( Short for his official name of N.D.'s Pride ) He came with this lovely, double thick mane. (First pic ) Well this past winter he has done everything possible to wreck it, from rubbing it out on trees, and the fence, to getting burrs in it day after day, you name it he did it. This summer, he learned to escape from the paddock on almost a daily basis by reaching under the last strand of our high tensile fence and kept pushing until he squirted out underneath. ( This is the largest horse in the paddock. Jumping over is too much work! But weed-eating under the fence is not! ) This also did wonders for his mane. It finally ended up part dreadlocks interspersed with short, jagged patches that looked like a shocked, mad scientist's hair. UGH! How did he go from my pretty pony to THAT!

So we electrified the H**l outta the fence. He doesn't go near it now. And then I had to fix his mane. I don't think he approves of his new haircut much by the one pic! Oh Well!
