I have a big, custom-made wood-and-screen enclosure for them.The adult's tank is bare, and the 'pillars will use the same tank only with their food plant in a modified water container in the middle.

Nice tarantulas, Steve. How about naming them when you post your pictures? Just to help out us poor uninitiated! I think I see an Indian Ornamental and maybe a Cobalt Blue.... but I don't really know my Mygalomorphs... now if they were endemic (true) British/European spiders I'd be able to name them all!

Those are some cool spiders...I'd prefer not to get too friendly with them though. I don't know much about spiders. Do they bite? Do they go through the same "taming" process as garters and do they have individual characters?

the simple fact is, you can never tame a tarantula, they just dont have the intellect to grow a relationship. they are solitary creatures and cannibalistic and will take down anything they can overpower. as for biting and agrression some spp are very docile while others would relish the chance to bite your face off lol. Keeping T's is kind of like keeping fish, you look but generally dont touch (though i have handled a fair few of my t's though they dont get any benefit from it) not only can they bite but spp from south and north america have special barb like 'urticating' hairs that they can kick off into a threats direction, these hairs are veery irirtating and lead to rashes or blindness if gotten in the eye and breathing problems if ingested lol. those african, asian and australian spp make up for this lack of urticating hairs by having much stronger venom and are quicker to bite, but while it would make you feel a bit sick and hurt like hell if you were bitten it wouldnt kill you, unless your allergic :eek:.

as for individiual characters, DEFINATELY you can have one G.rosea ( a common "beginner" T) that is the nicest critter ever yet another which would bite and not let go. they all have their own quirky little things which they do lol. hope this made sense and sorry for the small essay.

Im hoping to get a frog tonight. I rilly like this girl if she eats for me I will try to get her an scented mice. I have alot of frogs and toads in my area it would make sense for there to be hognose snakes and black necks.

HI all ,At this time of years I caught frog for my garter,I have 2 another week max to get enough frog for the next month .Hibernation coming soon.

So AT on spot there is lot of GReen frog but the blue phase I dont know if you have ever seen this.Not a rare find here.ON this pictures easy to see the difference between the regular and the blue phase.Sometime the bleu phase are paternless thats awesome.I will release this bleu one this week end.

I've caught and seen many green frogs, but none like that. Is it a regional feature?

In many location in Quebec ,there is this blue morph ,LAck of yellow pigmentation on the skin,some individual can be blue on the entire body,in the guide of reptile and amphibien of Quebec and Maritime province there is A stunning picture in the book totally sick.

I saw few this summer I will catch more this week end and I will take out door pictures you will see.

I caught one a few years ago and actually kept it as a pet. Only lived two years. They don't have a very long life span from what I've read, similar to a mouse's. It was a garbage disposal though. Ate everything from crickets and worms to fish and pinkie rats!

Some of these are mine & some are other family member's pets, but live with them, so here goes... My 3 corn snakes, a normal & 2 phantoms. The brown chihuahua is my baby, Isabella & the blond poodle was my gift to my Mom awhile after her poodle mix died, at 15. She's 2 1/2 now. Also have a Pom, but I can't find a pic of her right now.

I was at the New England Reptile Expo today and I wasn't expecting to get anything, just mice and crickets. I ended up coming home with a male 09 Black Milk. I was walking by the vendor and he pulled out the father to the snake I got to show people and I was amazed. It was probably one of the most impressive and beautiful colubrids I have ever seen, easily 6ft+. I did a couple of pass by's after that until finally I decided to buy one. He is 2 weeks old on Monday and is still in his first shed and hasn't eaten yet. The breeder told me I shouldn't have a problem getting him to eat and if I do just to contact him and he can do an extange or give me my money back. He was extremely help full and gave me all his infomation and a 3 page care sheet.

I caught this guy under some sheet metal. My parents are not to happy. If I catch another one my parents wont let me keep any animals so I wont be doing this agian. At 13 I caught my first hot :D

How did you pick it up? What kind is it? Do you plan on keeping it permanently? It's a truly beautiful snake.:) Vipers have always fascinated me, but I wouldn't want to keep one. After watching Venom ER a couple times, my enthusiasm was curbed by a strong sense of caution. - Getting bit didn't seem like fun. :o

HEres how it went. I just got home from school gave all of my things to my sister so she could go back up to the apartmant. I was just going to check a fence line quick for some rose bell lizards.
One ran into a bush so as I was look through the bush. OUt of the corner of my eye I saw scales. I only saw a side of it. I knew it was a rattle snake. SO I lifted up the sheet metal I saw the little guy. I ran home as fast as I could got my snake hook and an ice cream bucket. My mom was home she asked wut are u doing and I said youll see it.
So I ran down back to the sheet metal. Luckly the snake was still there. After a whiel of trying to get him into the bucket I finally picked him up bye the tail and used the hook to support him. I put him in the bucket put on the lid and walked back home. I went and put him into A deep tub. said to mom dont be mad at me you have to promise so she did then she looked into the tub and look at me. I could see the anger in her eyes. SHe dident say anything but walked into her room.
My dad dident have his phone so I had to wait until he got home. I said the same thing to him. He wasent as mad but couldent belive I actully caught a rattle snake even after I told him if I saw one I would. He just dident belive me. After a few pics we brought the tub back where I found it and let it free. MY dad was more worried than I was.

I dident feel like going over this so dont make fun of my english and misspelling :D

Jasmine is an '08 King Ratsnake (Elaphe Carinata) 66% het albino female from Amy Zerkle. I researched Carinata for around 3 years before I got my gal. When I first got her she went on my rack. That was a fail. She developed RI so I took her to a vet. When we got there they took precautions and gave me Fortaz (RI) and Panacur (Parasites). They said they wanted to give parasite meds as a precaution. I was fine with it anything for Jasmine. I spent $200 at the vet on her and she cost $112.37. So I put her in a regular viv. I slowly have made it a natural viv. It has full spectrum lighting and everything. She is my pride and joy. She is my favorite animal! I can't imagine NOT having her. Here are some photos.

So last night before I went to bed I checked my thermometers. Both racks were at 84 in the back. Perfect. Corn cage 83. Perfect! Garter nursery 80f perfect! King Rat snake...battery dead! Her hot side thermmometer had a dead battery! So I figure I will just grab some batteries and change the thermometer. So I opened the cage and unleashed the wrath of a sleeping carinata!

Her sister Isis is also getting big and not only that, she has the SAME 'TUDE. I have definitely learned from my 3 carinata that you never EVER wake them up and expect them to be okay with it. My girl threw an absolute fit last night when I walked into the snakeroom and turned the lights on at 1AM. I suddenly heard tail rattling, and loud hissing, and she was ready to strike even though I was across the room! My albino male is the same way, you just don't bother him on his own time! They definitely hate rack systems. They like LOTS of space, I started both of my babies in the rack and they quickly outgrew the tubs as well as started going off feed. Moving them into large vivs brought back their appetite and then some! The big difference between your girl and mine is that yours seems to have silver eyes! all of mine have red! Weird! Here was her a few days ago. NOT HAPPY.

That must be Jasmines older sister! Miss Jasmine is a pissy thing! Lsat night I was picking poop out of the cage ans she porpmtly stuck her head out of herhide latched onto my hand and drew blood! Actually, she is from the same clutch as Jasmine, she's an '08 poss het albino from amy zerkle. I think mine is a bit bigger than yours because I acquire my girl before you got yours, and most breeders only do a maintenance feeding. So I had more time to start stuffing mine with food than you so she's just grown a bit faster. I also use her as my garbage disposal now so anything that other snakes don't eat, I throw under her hidey and it magically dissapears overnight! These carinata are like magic, making things dissapear!

Here's Thumbilina. She's my 4 1/2 lb. cream Pomeranian. She was born in 2001. She doesn't mind getting decked out for the holidays. Those are real bells on her collar. they gingle like sleigh bells when she walks!
She is the sweetest dog you could ever meet. She will greet you with lots of "tongue sugars"
I'm overjoyed to have her, but it's a sad story. Her original human mommy (my dearest friend) died after many years of living with musclular dystrophy when Thumbilina was only 2. Thumbilina never left her side. When I found mommy in bed, obviously gone to meet the Lord, thumbilina still did not want to leave mommy. She's quite happy though, in her new home with me. But we both miss mommy very much.

Thanks! Actually, I have 3 more poms. Her sister,(orange) and two of her sister's pups,(sable and black&tan) which aren't really pups any more. They're only 18 months younger. I just didn't have any other pics handy on the PC, and I'm lazy. I worked for 4 months without a day off. Being lazy this week. I got 10 days off ending Monday night. I'm hoping I will still get to find some time to dig up pics of my last pair of garters (concinnus) that died at 18yrs(male) and 21yrs(female). I even have pics of some of the offspring they had over the years. I have no garters to show off right now! I did just get "jewels", a 3ft CB normal sinaloan milk, but she's fixing to shed and looks ugly right now. In spite of that, she's quite sweet and has a great temperament. LOL! Thanks! I just joined that one about 5 days ago. He was somewhat of an impulse, I'd been researching them for around a month. Was planning on having the right viv all setup & everything, then getting one around spring or summer, there usually aren't cresteds available around here that often, so figured I'd have to have one shipped. Went in to Petco (I know!) to see what kind of vivs they had & lo & behold, they had 6 cresteds there too. My mom & I had looked at a lot of pictures & had both decided that the prettiest ones were very much like this one, so when we saw one just the right color & everything, that didn't need to be shipped, decided to go ahead & get him right then. So he's in a temp. plastic home right now & we decided to make our own viv out of a 20gal long tank I have since we haven't found an already made one that is the dimensions I want. Don't know what gender it is yet, but my Mom named him Miami, she really likes him.

this is my pair of boa constrictor c.
My female approximately 8 years ol and around 7 feet long wc from Guyana ,my male probably same age just over 5.5 feet long is wc from Surinam.

The picture dont show their real color my female is more purple and my male is very pink!At this size im very please that she keep her purple color but for some reasons the color are changing all the time ,sometimes she is very bright and sometime she is darker.

They are together all along the time,I separeatre theme sometimes just to feed my male ,he wont eat when he is with the female.
She just shed so He look very interrested on her ,cross my finger!!!
She always shed in one pieces that make a ring like a condom* for real.
This is her shed few months ago ,unwinded shed around 7 feet long.

It had some scars from a heat lamp burn but has healed completely. Looks like I'll be building a large enclosure for the girl. I was told she loves her hopper mice.

This is Jewels, a female 6 yr old Pueblan(Nelson's) Milk snake, and his new "best friend" Rufus, a 7yr old pomeranian. They are both very much loved in my house, but Rufus get's a bit jealous at times. I only recently acquired Jewels by responding to an ad on craigs list.

Thanks for the comments. She's full of contradictions. Sometimes she just totally freaks out when you take her out of her tank. Other days, she's as calm as can be. She usually totally hates being in the open and exposed like that, but I think she was enjoying the sun this time. Most of the time, even if she freaks a little, she'll settle down and doesn't mind being held. She can be pretty sweet. She ate two live adult mice the first time I fed her, but dang, the lump was gone in 2 days. Found a deal today from an old childhood friend (she owns a pet store and stables) on young rats that are about the right size for her. $1 each. Going to see if she likes them soon.

Ooops. It has come to my attention that I actually made a mistake! I said jewels was a nelsons (pueblan) milk. I meant to say Pueblan (A.k.a. Campbell's) milk snake. I know, to stephan, they are all the same. But there are distinct differences in mexican milk snake ssp. so I had to clear it up. Only the Campbell's, a.k.a. Pueblan ssp. has the distinct trait of having the different colored bands, nearly equal in thickness, with the red bands having the tendency to "take a back seat" to the rest, and the distinct feature of the entire face (forward of the eyes) being entirely black.

Sorry I disappeared folks! I went through some rough stuff, broke up with gf, went into depression got addicted to video games. Played 14-16 hours a day, failed some college courses... I gave up all my garter snakes to loving homes, with the exception of the one I was intending to keep which I was forced just before winter to move outside, and despite my efforts got too cold on one surprisingly chilly night..
I still have my bullsnake, she's just under 5 feet long now, eating like a champ and very very manageable. However my baby, Charmander kept me going through everything, amazing the bonds between person/animal... I'll post a few shots:

I keep my 31 inch Nile Monitor in a 5X2X2.5 155g gallon, he's outgrowing it and will be moved into a 6X5X4 enclosure as soon as the weather warms up and I can build it.

The sav right now is being kept in a tank with the same dimensions, it's a little small but for now I make up for it by letting him free roam my room when I am at home, and he is doing great, he will be also getting a 6X5X4 very soon.

Thanks Steve. All I've gathered as far as his coloring is that he's a nice bright normal. Heating has been a bit of a learning curve as belly heat is the only thing that is important. A heat pad on one side of the tank on a rheostat/dimmer so that the glass right over the UTH is about 85 is what is recommended. Totally ignore ambient air temp. Of course, they're not diurnal, so don't appreciate a basking spot and heat lamps lower the humidity too much. That said, he came with a tiny UTH and both a night and day heat lamp and seemed to do fine with those in his previous home. I'm going with what's recommended and hubby's on a rheostat finding mission as we speak :) Since he constricts, he is fun to hold, but we don't see him much unless I dig him out of the carefresh to handle him. He's still settling in, so I've only done that once. I'm sure your kids will really enjoy handling your new corns, though :)

She has one experience with reptile outreach and education and did great. It was a wonderful experience for both of us. I can't wait to do it again. Draco my big amel, also has a a great disposition for it but I have yet to test him in this.

That's funny. I know what you mean about seeming to have empty tanks. Sometimes I don't see Jewels (4 foot female pueblan milk snake) for days on end. But when she does come out, everybody is like "WOW, pretty snake" and Amy is so small, she's easy to overlook. Got a 20 gallon ready for a pair of young adult concinnus though. They should be quite visible most of the time.

I'm also a member of the corn snakes forum. I forget how many new members get a baby corn snake and moan that they hide all the time. Its a baby snake. EVERYTHING eats baby snakes! Of course they will hide all the time! With sand boas, its just normal. They're ambush hunters and that's the way they hunt. My adult corn, however, is at a different stage in his life and actively cruises his tank on a regular basis. ( I think he's also looking for love! ;-) I remember when I was getting the home visit to adopt my greyhound and Draco decided to cruise his tank in full view of my guest. She asked how many snakes I had in that tank. When I said just one, her jaw dropped. Luckily she wasn't the squeamish kind so I brought out Draco and Fran the sand boa. She held them and was really impressed with how shiny and warm they were. So I made a snake friend there.

But to anyone getting a baby corn snake, THEY HIDE ALOT! They also LOVE old paper towel rolls as hides.

adopted from previous owners, I take it? When I adopted Jewels, I really wanted to take the woman's 5 foot CA King,(in a 40 gal) and her adult normal corn,(in a 20 gal) for the snakes' sake, and the tanks they were in, but I didn't. (I regret it now)

She was asking $25 for all 3 including the tanks. I gave her $50 just for Jewels, including 20 gal tank. Woman didn't have electricity. I felt sorry for her and her snakes.

Yes... I still dabble in other snakes! I picked up my third snake from Joel Acosta at hamburg this past saturday... This time it's a female Sumatran Short Tail (black blood) and a very nice one, at that! Got a lot of growing to do... She's an 08 and will only get blacker!

And there's something about the way that they retain their wild side and may decide to whack me at any given moment that I just love! I like a short, fat snake. That's why i like the banded water snakes too. Keep in mind though that bloods can get 5-9 feet in length so eventually they don't look quite as stubby. A lot of people make the mistake of overfeeding their bloods, they become obese rather easily. Their spinal ridge should be visible and they should not look overly bloated all the time. They are really fun to work with, something that needs much less maintenance than my other stuff and I really enjoy how easy they are to keep, and I look forward to making baby bloods!

Here's a beautiful female Bull snake(Pituophis catenifer sayi) She's thin and in need of some TLC. I just so happen to have some bull snake TLC left over from last year and it's still good.
She expects food every time I pass the enclosure and she's tagged me twice since she came to live here. All of it is feeding response. It will take sometime to get her calmed down. Right now all she can think about is food.

Awesome! I loved my San Diego gopher snakes. Usually I'd find them 3-5 feet but 6-8 was extraordinary. Dwarf hamsters? I was feeding my 4 footers large mice and occasionally they would take WC fence lizards.

You're right about the ground squirrels though. I discovered that the best way to find a very large SD gopher was to go out on a warm spring morning right after sunrise and watch the ground squirrels from a distance. When they start having a fit and seem to be upset and attacking something, nine times out of ten, I'd run over there and find a large gopher snake (5-7 feet) poking around. One out of ten times, it was just a small rattlesnake or CA king.

Oh, then you'd probably love to get your hands on an adult black milk snake from central america. Only $75 on craigslist in Clark Co. WA. It's been more than a week and the ad was posted again. I couldn't believe it. I'd love to have that snake myself but priorities rule that out.

I could do triangulum, but I'd rather have zonata, even though they are similar. I grew up around zonata so there's that emotional connection that gets in the way <gg>

zonata are off limits! shame on you. Milks can be just as beautiful. Zonata can be found even in Washington State, about 40 miles east of my location in a state park. The rangers are very protective of them but are very willing to show you where and when you can photograph them. I had a good relationship with some of the rangers some years ago. We shared common attitudes toward the snakes and they took me to the best spots for viewing them. By far, the coolest snake in the state. Also the rarest.

When I lived in San Diego they were pretty common in the east mountains.

I am sure you are right if you live in Washington, but they are not off limits in Cali (there are regulations however).

In Utah the tri-colors we have, Utah Pyros as well as the Utah Milks, are off limits unless you aquire a permit. I guess if you consider Longnose snakes a tri-color I miss spoke, they are non-controled

Maybe someday one will show up in captivity, either for sale or in a rescue type situation. Until then I'm happy leaving them be... But, we can wish all we want for these marvelous snakes... just like we all wish we could have San Fran Garters. Not going to happen, but doesn't stop me from wanting one... and in the case of most sup species of zonata it would be perfectly legal to have one... a single one in most cases.

I had only ever planned on having two non garter species, rubber boas & a king. The corn was a fluke that hubby brought home from some guy who's kid wasn't caring for it any longer. We'll see about adding the other two, but I'm in no hurry :)

They are a federally protected species so they are illegal to disturb, keep, breed, or transport anywhere in the country (U.S.).

Captive breeding is legal in Europe as you have seen on the forum, but some wonder if the captive population will run into trouble because there are (theoretically) no new genes being entered into the pool so it may eventually cause a bottle neck problem.

I have been criticized for taking concinnus but they aren't rare at all. I take just a few from areas where you can spot dozens in just a few minutes. That includes my secret location for hypoanerythristic concinnus. Actually, it's not exactly a secret. These snakes are observed by many people almost daily. but I'm just not going to blab it out here for the whole garter world to know. That could be disastrous.

Well, it's official. Jewels is gone. I miss her already even though she was kind of a beeatch with a bad attitude. I traded her for a 55 gallon long tank with screen top. She went to a good home. The man has a reptile room and gorgeous collection of milk snakes and other snakes. Raises his own mice too.
