Here's Tank in the morning doing his stretches. He such an animated turtle. Goes through the day without a care in the world. Nothing seems to bother him or concern him. He gets along with everyone and wants to know what everything is.

I've been considering getting some frogs. I have a shelf over my desk that could another live-plant setup.
I'd have to resist the urge to feed them off to my snakes though...

Found this photo in a box. Tank and I have been close for a long time. I remember the days when I could keep him in my arms. Now, he breaks out with little effort on his part. At 36 pounds he's a powerful/strong turtle.

I've been asked by many people if I will get another snapping turtle. My answer has always been the same in that I think Tank is enough. Today, things changed. I was visiting a local Tractor Supply store checking out their 300 gallon stock tanks. It's time Tank gets a big area to swim in. I mentioned to an employee that I had a snapping turtle. His reply was "so do we" Then he showed me this hatchling, still with its egg-tooth intact.
I'm guessing this turtle was born in the last few day. When I asked what they were going to do with it they offered it to me. So it looks like I'll be raising up another turtle. This little one seems unafraid and is very adventurous. Time will tell if I have the makings of another special turtle.

Thanks LeAnn. The new little one ate a couple earth worms last night and pooped. She/he seems to have a outgoing personality and isn't afraid of much. These are all good things.

Remember these photos? Well, rather then repost them I'll just use them over again for the second hatchling that has come to live with us. The second one was found within 300 feet of the first one. My guess is they are related to each other. So now I've got two tiny shelled ones to care for. Both have great attitudes and are eating.

The little shelled ones had to be separated out. Caught them in a stare down, all that was left was a fight. They are still in the same container but with a partition I don't have to worry anymore.

A Funny Tank Story
For almost a week Tank has been off food. This isn't normal for him and as far as I can remember he's never turned more then 1 meal down. I've been very worried about him and thought he might be constipated or worst had a blockage. I've had little sleep the last few night as I'm always checking on the big guy. He's been very restless in his water and can't seem to figure whether he wants in it or out of it.
Today, he came to me and acted like he wanted out of his water. I lifted him out and set him on the floor next to me. He immediately started climbing up on my lap. My first reaction was one of appreciation thinking he wanted to sit with me. That reaction was replaced quickly with "oh, crap" From his body and head position and the look in his eye I could tell he was being a little to friendly, if you know what I mean. I started laughing but quickly got up when I though he was about to bite my shirt. It wasn't a mean bite but a love bite as they grab the neck skin of their mate and clamp their claws on the female's shell.
It became obvious to me what tank is going through. He's in "Heat" and looking for love in the wrong place.
This time will pass in the next few weeks and I'll have my boy back. For now, we're all watching out for the wildman turtle. I hope the dog is smart enough to avoid him.
I love Tank but not as much as he loves me right now:D

The twins came out tiny, one 5 grams and the other only 3. The 3 gram baby doesn't look 100% to term, so fingers crossed he will thrive! The other 4 babies in the clutch are between 9 and 11 grams and very healthy looking.

Normals are plenty cool. I love them! But normals also have belly checkers. I can't tell from the photo, but this corn looks like they're either split or not present. With all the genes floating around out there in corn snakes, it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what you have unless you know what the parents were and even then, surprises will still pop up in clutches because of possible hets that may be unknown to the breeder. Some people care. Some people don't. :)

Just this Sat. Tank (Chelyrda serpentina - Common Snapping Turtle) took a trip to Des Moines to visit our good friends Mark and Rite. We also were making contact with one of the staff at the Science Center of Iowa. They are going to be hosting Tank and I for a presentation on Tank's life. Tank has never been on a car ride any longer then 15 minutes so this was going to be a test of his resolve.
The trip up was filled with a wandering 37 pound turtle that wished to be up front with me. I would have to keep him at bay with my arm as we sped down the road at 70 MPH. Tank just didn't understand why he couldn't be with me. The looks from the other drivers as this took place were classic. Tank performed perfectly the entire day. I put him in many different stressful situations and he stayed calm, cool and collected. Aside from him rolling his window down and trying to climb out of the vehicle as we drove down the street, all was good. Once at the Science Center Tank met many new people and worked great with everyone. Many children were there and got a hands-on experience they won't soon forget. Tank really is a people turtle. I think the Science Center was impressed and scheduled Tank to work on a Saturday in May of 2015. He will be there "World Turtle Day" presentation.
Tank has always impressed me but this weekend he showed me his ability to take on new situations without a change in his attitude.

Yup, it's an eastern. Nice one too! I almost never find them with that amount of red on the body!
"Curious and bold" doesn't really describe their personality though. I'd go with "generally disgusted at the two-legged servants' inability to keep up to their high standards"

Must be a geographic thing. Even the males around where I live are mostly brown. When they are colorful it always runs toward yellow. Never seen one with even a little bit of actual red on it.

I though I would post a photo of one of my other snakes. This is my adult female New Guinea tree Boa, Candoia carinata carinata. These are small arboreal boas that have the most dainty little faces. They come in quite an array of patterns and colours but both of mine look similar. They make nice display animals and they tend to enjoy cooler temperatures than many other boas and they have a slower metabolism as well. I got this snake when it was very small and have had her for the last eight years. She has gotten more and more attractive with age and she has lightened in colour over time. Candoia is my favourite genus of snakes and I am always looking for more, although they are not common in Canada these days.

Nice snake, but the enclosure is what grabbed my attention first lol. One of the most natural looking ones I've seen!

11-14-2014, 11:32 AM
Thank you. The enclosure is looking pretty shabby these days. It once contained many live plants but they don't tend to do so well in there over time. The only live plant that is still clinging to the moss and treefern section is a tiny little orchid called Pleurothallis brighamii (http://www.orchidspecies.com/pleurbrighami.htm), which has been in the same spot for at least ten years. This was the first terrarium I made using the Great Stuff foam method and it has stood the test of time. You simply take tree fern panels or cork bark/drift wood and arrange them on the back of the aquarium (while laying flat on it's back) and then carefully fill around them with the expanding foam. Once the foam cures you can carve it or simply apply a layer of black silicon to the surface and then finish it off by covering the wet silicon with dry coconut coir. The effect is very natural and you can get creative and add pots t the vertical wall to hold plants as well. The pots in the vertical wall of my terrarium are empty these days, the snake loves to coil up in them so I decided to leave them empty. I am in the process of planning a much larger terrarium with front opening doors. Having a screen top means too much humidity is lost without having an automatic misting sysyem and it makes it a pain to keep the plants happy. Also any pots that are embedded in the wall need a drainage hole of the plant will not survive.
I am very much into plants and have a large collection of orchid species and other rare plants so I want a way to display plants along with my tree boa.
Here is a how to on foam backgrounds for terrariums.

I've used the foam before to try and get a natural look, but I can't keep plants alive (I'm a botanist, but give me an aloe plant and it'll die in two weeks). Unfortunately the snake that I made that terrarium for went blind, so now I have to use newspaper as substrate so he won't eat the bedding if he smells traces of food on it.
I really like using the foam for frogs since it's the easiest way to avoid sharp edges on decor!

I am located in Louisiana. Sometimes I go to Baton Rouge for work. Their is a big neighborhood where it seems that in everyones back yard there is a garter (multiple sometimes). I really would like to find a Thamnophis sauritus sackenii to keep with the one I have now ( I think thats what mine is), but then I hear its better to get captive bred to have no risk with parasites. If I were to breed them I have the perfect place to release some of the babies near a brook where I caught mine, they seem to do well there.. I think they're primarily in Florida.

You do not want to release pets (or their offspring) into the wild. Sell or give them away as pets; it's a win:win situation. People can find captive bred animals without having to take any from the wild-win, and you have not put wild populations nor your individual animals at the many risks of captive release-win.

This is Pershing a male Chelydra serpentina - Common Snapping Turtle. He was rehomed to us as his former family was afraid of him. Pershing has begun some basic training to be social. The biggest problem is his very aggressive eating response, he doesn't care if it's food or my hand. I can see in his eyes that he's still unsure of his situation. Time will tell to what degree he will settle in.

I don't think I've ever seen a time when my boy Tank seemed uneasy. He is the most relaxed turtle I've ever seen. This photo is one of his tall stretches he does. I'm glad he's so comfortable in our family.

Saturday, Tank and I spent the day in Des Moines at the Science Center of Iowa. Being World Turtle Day, Tank had been hired as the guest turtle for the Center's celebration. I did a 45 minute PowerPoint presentation on Tank's life and then the audience got to met Tank. As usual Tank was perfect and he made many new friends.

We are having a pretty decent year here. This was my first year to produce Tessera cornsnakes of my own, my absolute favorite corn gene. Ended up with 11 babies and proved out the het I most wanted my Tessera boy to have, Caramel, and also almost certainly proved him to be one of only a handful of of proven homo Tessera corns out there, as every baby from him was a Tessera. That's a fairly big deal.
Caramel Tessera baby.

Even when he's hungry, tired, stressed or anything else his attitude toward me and other humans never change. He's not totally trusting of new people if I'm not near. When I'm near he trusts everyone. He's the prefect presentation snapping turtle to see the other side of these shy and defensive turtles.

Thanks Albert. Tank has been trusting for a long time. I've been the one that was dragging my feet. My favorite time is morning. He is excited to see me and just wants my touch. Even when it's a food day or I'm a day late he wants my time and touch more then food. Feeding time is one of patience from him, I try to offer him my finger and he refuses to bite, giving me a look like I'm stupid. I'm truly amazed at his intelligence. He misses nothing and requires to be involved in new things. I wish more people could meet him and spend time with him.

I want to meet Tank! lol
My Turtle is pretty similar. Even if my hands are covered in food, she'll spend about three minutes sniffing trying to figure out what's up then refuse to bite me. If I'm going to be in my reptile room any length of time I have to let her out because she flips herself trying to get out and follow me around. I think turtles get a lot less credit for their intelligence and ability to bond with their keepers than they deserve.
Aside, I think Tank being so sociable is really down to you. I mean, how many people would be willing to risk an accidental bite from one that size to work with him like you do?

This is what happens when a mouse actively outsmarts and stares down my hungry python for half an hour until she loses interest. We live by gladiator rules in my house; if a feeder makes it through the gauntlet on their own merit and not just due to the other animal not being hungry, they win a life filled with all the goodies I can provide. In almost three years of live-feeding my python, this is the first time it's happened.

jere000
08-26-2015, 11:05 AM
Thanks man this only part of the collection haha. The anaconda is pretty chill now he was nippy at first and still bites occasionally, but he'll be like a puppy in no time(the VPI T+ i worse then him haha)With daily handling any snake can become tame.If they bite you don't put them away keep handling it, and put it away once it chills out.If you put it away when you get bit, it will keep biting. As it got the result it wanted you left it alone, so he will continue to due so.
Albert Clark
08-26-2015, 11:11 AM

Albert Clark
08-27-2015, 10:33 AM
Yes, I have 5 total. I am holding back 1 female and 1male. I know I have at least 1 other male and female. Not sure about the other dh. I have to double check the sex on one of them.
jere000
08-27-2015, 10:46 AM
Unless you plan on buying more I'm sure you already know it will be a couple years before they're ready unfortunately. If you ever want to join the dark side and get a smoking boa let me know, we could work a trade for some of those baby DH albino pieds haha.
Albert Clark
08-27-2015, 02:06 PM
Nah, I am breeding for my project to come to fruition. I definitely wont be buying any pythons. I was planning to breed my male dh back to his mother to try and speed the process along. Lol. You know it all depends on the odds gods too on what they bless you with. That should increase my likelihood. I will think about the t+ boa though. Haha.
jere000
08-27-2015, 04:59 PM
The odds gods are so cruel at times too hope for the best would love to see some pic of albino pieds haha.the only thing I don't like about breeding one of the DH' back to the mother is they'll only be 50% het pied in that clutch so it will be hard to know what's what not all of them have markers. The T+ is worth somewhere around $1600 , I wouldn't trade him for anything right now he's just to good looking haha.I'd be happy to trade some of his offspring in the future for some infernalis though.
Albert Clark
08-27-2015, 07:42 PM
Well, the markers are not a definitive indication of het pied anyway. The real test is to breed the animal. Some animals with markers never prove out and some without markers can turn out to be hets and prove out. Come on and breed that t+boa so we can check out what he has, haha. I should be producing some pieds soon also. My male pied bred my pied girl. She is building right now. Expecting a clutch from her soon.
jere000
08-28-2015, 03:36 AM
Sweet can't wait to see some little pieds, and the VPI T+ should have a litter or two this season. Most likely one, male boa usually don't do so well with breeding multiple females.

Well looks like I'm going to be getting into darts in the somewhat near future. Happened to stumble across a guy going around reptile groups getting the hype built up for a new product he is releasing. Apparently this Canadian biologist has been working is his spare time for 20 years on making the perfect all in one tank for darts and other tropical species (although this setup can do more than just that). He is getting the funding for his first production models through kickstarter and his campaign already got funded in a little over 3 hours. I personally got in on the early orders and got 50% off his biggest enclosure the Aqua.
https://scontent-dfw1-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/t31.0-8/12038882_170707946601324_432288841165451574_o.jpg

This setup is absolutely amazing. It's more or less controlled by your smartphone. You basically select the species you are keeping and this thing will automate EVERY aspect of keeping the habitat perfect. It has little zoned thermo controlled heatmats so you can provide perfect temp gradients. It has hygrometer controlled sprayers to keep humidity w/e you want it at a certain time of day. The light system has dawn and dusk dimming as well as long term seasonal shifts (same with temps if you want to do so). There is a system that introduces fresh air into the viv when needed. That system also ties into the back wall of this thing that is literally an aquaponics setup and introduces air under the substrate to keep plant roots healthy. It can also have the pond mode with several land sizes or just terrestrial only giving you more height to work with. It also has a built in webcam so you can stare at your herps anytime lol :D I'm sure there are a few features I'm missing too. This guy seriously though of everything and frankly the prices with the kickstarter promo are a steal for the features. I'm going to probably be keeping a trio of tinc dart frogs in this setup myself. If interested search facebook or kickstarter for Biopod.

Tank is a Common Snapping Turtle - Chelydra serpentina. I don't think it's possible for an alligator snapping turtle to be like Tank.

Oh, ok thanks. I talked about him and mentioned your name at the last L.I. herpetological society meeting but I wasn't sure on his true classification.

Are you on the west coast? Chelydra serpentina are not welcome west of the rockies.
Yes I am found myself back in Las Vegas, can't understand why they're not welcome they wouldn't survive 2 minutes out of the enclosure when it's 115F outside haha

Thanks! I plan to have 2 litters this season. ( Yellow and charcoal male x black and yellow female and yellow male by black female) Check back with me around June or July. I know people say that they can't be fed a diet of rodents, but mine have been fed hairless mice from day one and all my babies and adults eat mice and are very healthy. As long as you use hairless mice and don't over feed them they do great on mice.
