I had a dog once....when I was younger. He and I were best freinds for a long time. He was hit by a car when I was 14 years old. I never got over it, never had a dog since.

Oh James! That's very rough indeed... but it's my personal opinion that you should certainly try again. The losses are more painful than words can say, but the joy and the love and the fun and adventures make the inevitable worth it. The smiles they give you everyday are such a gift. (Oh, and occasionally there are other gifts they give you too, but we'll skip that part for now... LOL!!!!!)

Thankyou Lori. I still think about him (his name was Bilko), 33 years later. But if I ever had another one I would be comparing it to him all the time, and that wouldn't be fair. I've never seen such unquestioning loyalty, not even in my wives! He was a one-off! Bless him.

James you can't expect a wife to live up to a dog - or vice versa
it's like apples and oranges
and you'd never compare dogs as you would wives
each and every dog is perfect - except for the shed
it doesn't come off in one piece and gets all over your stuff

I dunno Rhea... I compare the dogs to the hubby all the time. LOL And he usually comes up lacking... :D And what's more, he knows it...

Just kidding. I love my hubby, he puts up with a LOT of crap from me!!!!!!!:D

drache

my soon to be hubby was born in the year of the dog, so I get the two-in-one deal - except it's not necessarily the best of both (case in point - shedding)

Your life would be tedious indeed if you looked to me for experiences...... I get up, I go to work, I go to bed, I get up, I........
just like me
but everyday experiences are a little different for everyone
we all live from a slightly (or vastly) different point of view
while your external life may seem pedestrian, your interests are not and you've got a different set of experience and a viewpoint of your own
I do admit that I find members of this forum generally interesting
I live vicarously through Lulu and Don and KitKat and everybody as well
but since I don't know you all in the flesh, I must admit that a good deal is made up

Make up a really exciting and glamourous life for me, Rhea. One where work isn't mandatory and bills are never a problem. Make me taller and younger. Sometimes I could rescue young women from dangerous situations. I could give profound and moving speeches, addressing all the major world issues. Maybe I could be a super-hero......

For Christmas my boyfriend and got 2 kittens. The first one's Caspian, he's only a lil over 2 months old.

they're the only critter I've tried keeping that I've had absolutely no success with

mycolorfulheart
01-06-2008, 11:40 AM
the crabs are pretty finicky actually. i got them because they were supposed to be this really easy pet, but it's just the opposite! They need lots of humidity, high temps, exercise...I love the ones I have but I don't see myself getting more, just because I think they're one animal that doesn't take well to domestication. Just the stress of being in captivity is enough to stop them from breeding, and it's that same stress that usually kills them.

I have a question for all the people with pics of their snakes interacting with other animals/snakes outside/etc. - my garter is so flighty, i would never trust her not to run away! Do you just have much more mellow snakes?

tikichick
01-06-2008, 12:54 PM
I totally agree. I have no idea why they say they're an easy pet. My roommate had four- 2 died after about a year, another one died a week after she got it, and there's one left (that she didn't take when she moved, so I'm stuck with it, lol).

you guys are having trouble with hermit crabs? i had 4 when i was like 6 and they all lasted like 3 years and at that time i had absolutely no idea how to do anything else besides feeding them and cleaning the cage, they were really fun because you could get a larger shell and paint it and theyd move into it

I'd say it's the exception rather than a common occurrence
we had a couple very old and sedate cats who were fine with the herps
I have some garters that are mellow enough to be taken to the outdoors, but I've only done it once to photograph them
when I see people with snakes out and about, they're boids

I've come to understand that our old cats were just too old and lazy
our new cats are young and energetic
and as far as they're concerned, it's a cat-eat-herp world
for Sienna it may be "play with and kill", but I have no doubt, that Rascal would eat whatever he killed - he ate a super worm a few days ago
so now I have to make my cages cat-proof too
Jeff's mom thinks Rascal will figure out how to open the sliding glass doors on the lizard cages

... and are they, well, rubbery??:D

Loren
01-12-2008, 12:29 PM
Nice little collection, Loren!! I also think the rubber boa is pretty cool-- how big do they get?

Rubber boas max out at 33 inches long but typically are more like 15-25 inches (35-84 cm), with males tending to be at the bottom of that size range, and females more toward the larger end. My female is about 21 inches, and 135 grams. The like it cooler than other snakes- I keep them in sterilite tubs on the bottom shelf (cooler location) without any extra heat. They can be active in the wild down to 50 degrees farenhite.
They are constrictors, mainly rodent eaters. In the wild, they seem to like to raid rodent nests, and if they are attacked by the mother mouse, they hide their head, and take the very blunt tail (which looks like their head) and strike with it. When I caught my female, she actually had scars on her tail that seemed to confirm this.
They live in moist habitats moistly, and can be found under bark and other surface cover, or occasionally crawling around at night.
They are very docile. I have never heard of one biting anyone.

I found this on the internet they do wink if you wink at them

Body language Body language is the most important way of communication by Mongolian gerbils. Below here you will find a short summary of different kind of body language by Mongolian gerbils.

Greeting
Mongolian gerbils greet one another by licking each other's mouth; they recognise each other through the taste of their saliva. Another way of greeting is touching each other's noses.
You can see at the right-hand picture how it looks like. The picture is taken by Petra van der Meiren.

http://www.petermaas.nl/gerbils/images/gerby-wodan.JPG
Peaceful
When Mongolian gerbils are on its ease they will wash themselves. They wash their face, belly, back, and also their tail by holding it with their front feet.
Excitemen
An excited Mongolian gerbil jumps with all four feet in the air. Sometimes two gerbils are boxing with their front feet. Mostly this boxing is a game, but can also be very serious.
Fear
When a Mongolian gerbil is afraid it sits straight up, as frozen, with it front paws together like praying.
Curious
Mongolian gerbils are curious animals. When he is curious he will sit straight up as in fear, but the gerbil looks relaxed. It snuffles in the air, with trembling whiskers, and moves his head back and forth.

http://www.petermaas.nl/gerbils/images/nieuwsgierigegerbil.jpg
Asking to be groomed
When a Mongolian gerbil wants to be groomed, it will roll on its back in front of another gerbil, offering his throat. The other gerbil can rarely resist such a gesture, and will groom its partner. This isn't just a way to be cleaned, but also to keep good social relations. When your gerbils groom each other very often it means that everything is going well in the group.
I want to be left alone
An irritated gerbil will push another gerbil (or your hand away with its head.
Ready to fight
When Mongolian gerbils are ready to fight, they will push each other with their heads, and then start a real box and wrestling match.
Eye winking
At last I want to have it about the eye winking with one eye that Mongolian gerbils often do. It seems to be a sign of pleasure and gratitude, and they do this often when they get some tasty tidbits. In other timid situations, it seems to be a submissive sign. You can try it yourself. When you wink to a gerbil, the gerbil will often wink back.

rubber boas will actually fend off mother mice with their tail while eating the litter of pinkies. got a friend here in utah that knows tons about them and his dad is probably the top expert on them. havea cool website...tons of info on them, very nice snakes! just looked for his page.. The Rubber Boa (Charina bottae) Information Portal (http://www.rubberboas.com) nothing came up.... not sure what happened with the site.

I have never met the Hoyers, but am very familiar with their research.
It took me about 3 years of trips to the sierras to find my first. I flipped over this little piece of bark in this beautiful meadow, and there she was.
http://www.thamnophis.com/thamphotos/data//500/medium/Mountain_meadow.JPG
For some reason, I have pics of the meadow, but not of the snake that day. I think I was too exited to care about taking pictures.
Probably one of my most memorable finds, since it was such a nice area, nice day, and awesome snake, that I had wanted to find for so long.
I found a male while night driving the next year. Thats it for me so far.

She comes from the animal shelter. She probably had a hard time, because the first months that we had her, she was very quit and very easily scared ( just raising your voice was enough for her to crawl into a corner). But she's a real sweety towards everyone.

Only 1 little disadvantage, she never learned to play. So if you trow a stick, she's like "What the hell are you doing??? Go get it yourself, that's no fun". On the other hand, she loves to go for a run with you :)

Lori P
01-28-2008, 07:08 AM
Aw. So many of the rescue dogs don't know how to play. Or maybe it's that she's decided fetching is below her... you may need to get her a dog of her own to fetch for her. :-)

I gather by Bosten you are refering to Mantel? in any case that Dane is just plain old Black. the white bits on the chest and toes are just a normal pigment thing that often happens in Black animals :p Mantel or Bosten is a very specific pattern that looks very much like the colouring on a Bosten Terrier. Black is well, Black with possable white markings on the chest and toes, which is acceptable but not prefered.

your pup is adorable Reptileparadice!

Ooooh Bear is cute-- I looooove their little whoop whoop noises and squeals!!!!! OH, you just reminded me-- a while ago I bought a t shirt just because I found it hilarious-- it reads:

Guinea Pigs
They're not just for breakfast anymore

Well, I made the mistake of wearing it into PetSmart the other day without thinking-- holy hell, I thought one of the customers there was going to have a coronary; her face got all red when she read it and she started telling me, in strangled tones, about what wonderful creatures cavies are... I had to cut her off and tell her over and over, it's a joke, it's a joke... I love cavies, but sometimes you just have to laugh...

Note to self, never wear it into a pet store again!!!

Lori, you little **** disturber! Too funny!

The guy that found the St. Paul Pioneer Press Winter Carnival Medallion last year, his initial is "J." He set a record and found it w/in three Clues. Prior to that the quickest it had been found was in five Clues. (The paper was kind enuff to do a second hunt; like only the second time that's ever happened in the approximate 55 years of the Medallion Hunt.)

So,anyway, a lot of us got shirts that said on the front "WWJD?"

The back said"

"Where Would Jxxx Dig?"

I used to have a smiley face shirt with a bullet hole in the forehead and blood running down between the eyes. ticked off a lady in a store back in Idaho, she was walking with her little boy or 4 or 5 with a blue smiley face shirt on...she saw mine and got mad at me!!!! I loved it!!!

I've already promised to keep my teenage boys away from Don's Nikki, guess I'll add your daughter to the list, too  Hey, wait, how am I going to get a cool, snake loving, daughter in-law if I keep my boys away from them all?:D

Thanks all. Wayne, you have some outstanding animals yourself. Just for clarification, the girl holding the large axanthic florida king is my daughter. The girl holding the huge okeetee corn is my niece. I'm sure with both girls having an interest in snakes, that will down on the number of boys. Maybe... I hope..
Lori P. thanks for the compliment. I've used that okeetee corn that my niece is holding at York River State park for native species presentations. Funny how there's two of us from New Kent, LOL. Steve

here's our new household member, Jenna
she is Henner's intended future mate
we'd been thinking about it for a while, but beardies are so pricey and we wanted a nice looking one with some orange, so it didn't seem we would find one within our range
so perhaps it was good that we got to the show late and she was reduced ($85)
also - I wasn't shopping for animals and I might not have seen her when it was more crowded
the cool thing is that my old vet was there and I took her to him right away and he said she's in fine condition
so here she is

Here's the little dude that we placed with my mom until she could no longer care for him... should have kept him here all along, but thought we were doing the right thing at the time... anyway, he is the sweetest, easiest dog that I've ever had. I'm used to wrangling the danes and even though they were well trained it's just so different with this guy... there is no work involved, only the good stuff :) Anyway, here's Chance :D

Christa, I never thought I would have one or two of them.
A friend I worked with at the Daycare, had rescued 2 from a guy who neglected them.

She had them for about 3 months, till I got them in June. I wasn't going to keep them. But only after they got here, I wanted them.
Both of mine are girls, so sweet. They eat mealworms, waxworms, & crickets.

Bella is special, her front 2 legs/feet, well the person who had them, never realized she had stuck shed on her feet for a few months. So not helping her with the shed, & then no calcium. She still walks on them fine. It doesn't stop her. I got the shed off, with soaking & using the zoo med repti shed. After a few sheds, seems her feet are doing good.

I believe to be easy to care for, they are so soft, cute & sometimes they make little noises(like a chirp)

My freshly set up tank. $750 worth of stuff, everything you could need for a fish tank for $80. What a steal. 55 gallon tank.

The guy who had it before me didn't do a good job of cleaning the gravel so it is a bit cloudy while I let it settle.

Currently there are 7 bluegill in there. Ranging from 5"-9", I will be lowering it, I just want to see which ones do better and whatnot, probably will take it down between 4-6 but we'll see. They seem to have plenty of room to swim even though they all like the right corner far away from me... LOL
