I think Tank has bonded to me as he stays around me when I take him outside and he comes out of his enclosure to sit with me on the floor.
I'm not complaining as he is a joy to have around.
Not sure how that's going to work out when he's 20+ pounds.
Here he is looking for me. As long as I stay near him he's fine but sitting on the couch is out of the question. Too far away.
It's snapping turtle mating season and he's not getting weird with me so I think this is a good relationship.:D
He's doing a lot of shedding and requires daily skin cleaning which means hands on. I had to clean his eyes and face the other night and he offered no resistance to my work. I've worked with many snapping turtles in my years and this one is truly amazing. A hands-on snapping turtle that allows you to keep your fingers.
I wish you all could meet this wonderful turtle. As I type this he's on the couch sleeping.

Be careful. These creatures have been known to cause feedback loops in the space-time continuum. Only Bill Murray seems to be able to overcome the effects of the tachyon shift and thus be able to recognize it and restore normal space-time.

i'll see what i can do about hamburg. most of the shows i go to allow the public to bring in an animal as long as it's not aggressive and you have to keep it on yourself. no promises, i'll see how it goes. but, he'll be with me until one of dies, so if you're ever down this way, lemme know! and i'll have to figure out how to do a video.

I really don't think prairie dogs belong in a cage and they don't look like that normally. At least none I've ever seen in the wild. That animal seems obese. I just don't think the needs of those animals can be met under normal household conditions. That's why every time I see them in captivity they are extremely obese and lethargic when compared to wild ones. They get "soft" and lazy. They should be much thinner and extremely active, and need a lot of running room like they get on the prairie. They're also very social, so keeping just one seems cruel to me. I don't think a cage lined with straw is any kind of substitute for a dark underground burrow and open grassland. Just my opinion.
The ones I've seen in the wild (NE CA) look like this. And you have to be extremely careful, or avoid altogether, walking in fields where they occur. The fleas they host carry bubonic plague in CA.

I really don't think prairie dogs belong in a cage and they don't look like that normally. At least none I've ever seen in the wild. That animal seems obese.
He's a black-tailed prairie dog. Their body length reaches 14-17 inches. He's right about 10 inches now, give or take a little. Adults can weigh up to 3lbs (4lbs depending on where you get your info). He's 2.28lbs right now. Males weigh more than females. The black-tails are the heaviest of all the prairie dog species. He probably is over weight for his size. The people I got him from fed him dog food  I think the way he's sitting makes him look fatter than he actually is.
I just don't think the needs of those animals can be met under normal household conditions. That's why every time I see them in captivity they are extremely obese and lethargic when compared to wild ones. They get "soft" and lazy. They should be much thinner and extremely active, and need a lot of running room like they get on the prairie.
The most common prairie dog in the pet trade is the black-tailed. So the ones you see in captivity actually may not be obese. These little guys can get chubby in the wild. Do a google image search for "wild black-tailed prairie dog". You'll see a lot of big ones out in the open plains.
They're also very social, so keeping just one seems cruel to me. I don't think a cage lined with straw is any kind of substitute for a dark underground burrow and open grassland. Just my opinion.
They are very social. They'll bond with their owners. I read that rehoming them can cause enough stress to kill them. I would have taken two if they had them, but, it was just him. He is bonding with me. I open the cage and he runs right out and into my lap. I love on him and scratch him all over, he loves it! He's becoming friends with my fat cat too. They'll sniff each other and he'll reach out with his little hand and touch him. It's so cute!
Right now, he feels safe in his cage. When he's out wandering around and gets spooked, he takes off and jumps back in it. While I do have to keep him caged, he isn't stuck in it all day. He likes to come out and explore his new home. And I agree, a cage is not a substitute for their natural habitat. All I can do is provide him with the best I can, just like I do for all of my animals. I took some photos of his cage when I got him home. It was in rough shape...lined with newspaper covered in dried urine. His towel that he slept on also reeked of urine. I scrubbed it clean and tossed that towel. All he had to eat was a little bowl of dog food.
The ones I've seen in the wild (NE CA) look like this. And you have to be extremely careful, or avoid altogether, walking in fields where they occur. The fleas they host carry bubonic plague in CA.

Are you sure they were prairie dogs that you saw? According to all of the range maps I've seen, they don't occur in California. The only state they can be found in that borders California is Arizona. You may have actually be seeing a species of ground squirrel. Some look very similar to that photo:

I remember a long time ago they had them in stores here including petco. Then I remember some bad things happening. Some disease or something they were passing on to people. Talk of banning them, etc. Haven't seen them in stores here since.
They were banned back in 2003 because of monkeypox. The ban was lifted in 2008. They're still illegal to have in some states. Here's the information I found regarding the ban:
-----------------
Ok, lets look at the facts here. You have Prairie dogs bound for the pet trade that are housed too close to an imported Gambian Pouched Rat that happened to be infected with Monkey Pox. The Prairie Dogs went to their new homes, many harboring the Monkey Pox virus. Well, you guys don't really need me to go into the details on who had what and when.... so lets go back to where the virus came from.
The Monkey Pox virus was brought into the country via a shipment of animals from Africa that was delivered to a broker in Texas. One of the infected animals found it's way into the hands of a Chicago area breeder/broker which infected his Prairie Dog livestock. By the end of this ordeal a few domestic rabbits had aquired the virus as well.
-----------------
And I wasn't aware people hunt these! It's disgusting. There's several sites dedicated to it. People just sitting back in chairs with their guns shooting them as they pop out of their burrows.

He's a cutie Mike! I'm glad he's bonding with you. Picturing him jumping into your lamp and you giving him love warms my heart.:)
I also want to say that I understand what you are saying Richard...but it isn't as if Mike took this little guy out of the wild. Considering the conditions that Mike has described that the poor little guy was living in in his previous home, I would consider this a rescue. The animal probably could not survive in the wild at this point, so the fact that Mike is giving him a good home now is the best thing for him.

As far as I know "prairie dog" is just a type of ground squirrel anyway.
I've seen ground squirrels all over CA and even in western Nevada and northern Baja California. They're different than the "prairie dogs" I saw in Lassen Co., CA.
Ground squirrels are blood thirsty and they are usually very similar to tree squirrels, like the picture you provided. They'll eat anything they can catch including birds, snakes, etc. They also live in semi-arid or rocky habitats with little to no vegetation. That's not true of prairie dogs. The prairie dogs I saw look like the picture I provided. They "bark" (almost sounds like they're laughing at you when they are alarmed) Perhaps they were introduced (To Lassen county, CA) prairie dogs. They only could be found in the high mountain valleys which were very rich and well vegetated grassland, much like the midwestern prairies.
OK, I'll buy into the possibility that their "thickness" depends on species. I see that now. I stand corrected.
And yes, people hunt them. That's how I became familiar with them in Lassen county. (Little Valley, CA) They sure as heck don't act, eat, or sound like regular ground squirrels. That area has ground squirrels too. They don't live in the grassy valley. They live in burrows on hillsides surrounding the valley, in rocky outcrops. And let me explain why we were hunting the prairie dogs. Those grassy valleys also happen to be fenced grazing land for horses. Nearly every year, losses are sustained by the horses stepping in the holes and breaking their legs. Not to mention the virus laden fleas they carry. And yes, they carry actual bubonic plague right where we were hunting them.
But anyway, I was told that about 10 years after I was there, the valley flooded and killed them all. The ground squirrels remain, since they don't live in the grassy valley. All the prairie dogs perished. That's why I tend to think that perhaps they were introduced and didn't belong there in the first place.
I don't know why, but I just don't feel anything for most rodents except perhaps tree squirrels. I can tolerate those. But then again, I feel the same way about cats, even kittens. Some cats I can tolerate, but I certainly don't like them. Same for rodents. That includes beaver, hamster, guinnie pig, just about everything. Don't hate them, just don't like them. People say they're soooo cute. I just don't see it. Don't know why. I'm just weird I guess. Just like most people don't see "cute" when they see garter snakes. I think they're adorable.
All that aside, I have to admit, for a rodent, your new pet sure is cute. I'm sure you'll provide a good quality of life for him. I wish nothing but the best for you both.
mikem

yep, indeed they are a type of ground squirrel. :)
The possible introduction of prairie dogs into California and/or the floods killing them would explain why I couldn't find anything on them being there. That's why I suggested you were possibly seeing another rodent that looked similar to them.
I completely understand hunting them to protect the horses. I wasn't aware that they cause those issues. I know groundhogs are hunted for that very same reason.
And I guess we all have our preferences for animals. I'm trying to think of one I don't like, but having a hard time trying to figure that out this morning, lol! I'll get back with you on that once I'm fully awake and can give it some thought. Oh, and you should see the white squirrels we have. There's a large population about 20 minutes from where I'm at. I've shot many of them.... Not at all for sport, I like them, but when they become so... thick in the fields and have so many holes that your best bull breaks his leg just by jogging and enjoying himself. They are a pest. I have sent a Dashound down holes to catch n kill them, I have shot them with arrows, with a 22, with a 306 and with a shotgun. I wouldn't exterminate them with poison or gas as some do, I just quick, headshot, infestation / population control.
That bull was never the same after breaking his leg... He was like a cat... call him over, scratch him, sit on his back. He was the best bull anyone could ask for. I would read a book in the field laying in the grass n he would find me n lay down right close to me. I'd turn n use him as a pillow.

Yea, I wasn't aware of the issues they caused. The part that disgusted me, was this website I pulled up, on the front page, right at the very top was a picture of a prairie dog that had been shot, with half of its face and neck missing. I didn't want to see that just after receiving mine and typed out the first thing that came to mind. I don't like seeing pictures of people posing with their little dead bodies either. I've never had any interaction with them except for the one I have now and he's so sweet, I just reacted to what I saw without educating myself on why people would hunt them.

Yeah, I've seen them. Fox Squirrels I believe. There are solid black ones and solid white ones all over WA D.C. including The White House lawn. "Normal" color could be described as reddish brown with rusty highlights.
You know, the funny thing is, there's tons of gray squirrels here all over WA and OR and they visited my former home in Vancouver, WA every day, but they aren't native. They're EASTERN gray squirrels introduced from the east coast. The smaller native northwestern gray squirrel is endangered, largely because of the introduction of the eastern squirrels, but there's a healthy population of them around Ft. Lewis, WA. I guess that's because I haven't seen hide nor hair of an eastern gray squirrel in the southern Puget Sound area. Just 3 different species of chipmunks, and I've seen jet black ones, and even "cream" colored ones.
mikem

We also have red squirrels, though they're much rarer. Would those actually be considered the "normals"? Easterns are literally the only squirrels I ever see unless I specifically go looking for a different kind. A few years back a friend of mine went up to D.C. and was telling me about the black squirrels. I didn't even know they existed until then! They are melanistic easterns.

When I went to DC I actually contemplated stealing one of the squirrels from the whitehouse lawn :P They were morbidly obese and so used to people that they would come right up to the edge of the lawn. Then I remembered that I don't like rodents as pets (and that stealing one from the whitehouse is probably a felony). We used to have guinea pigs, and I liked them alright, but they were just wayy too much trouble for not much reward IMO.
Plus, all of our other animals are constantly bringing up dead rodents or eating f/t ones. I have a hard time becoming attached to something I have to be okay with all my other animals eating lol Of course, I used to say that about fish until I got a pet fish... And bugs until I got my millipede, so that might only last until I end up having to adopt a rodent for some strange reason :D (I was only about six when we had the guinea pigs, so I didn't really do much with them)

That's funny...the one thing I remember about going to D.C. is the squirrels. I've been there a few times...and the thing that always stands out in my mind is how the squirrels would walk right up to you...it's crazy...they just come right up to greet you like little dogs or something looking for food!

What should we use? Aspen was all we had. We got some crickets and flightless fruit flies today. We've been misting her and she has a "pond" and a water dish. She likes to cling to the sides of the tank.

You only need an aviary if you want to breed of in the case of a Goshawk, a seclusion aviary for moulting. I must stress Raptors are NOT pets. They do need special attention and cannot be treated like a cat or a dog. Lots of learning before even thinking about getting one. ;)

They really aren't for petting lol. I actually thought about looking into courses to learn about their care and husbandry, and to get some hands on experience before committing to anything. I still wouldn't think about it until I had more space though. I have a tiny tiny garden lol

Very cool birds.
In Michigan, you have to study for quite some time and serve an apprenticeship before getting a permit for a hawk. I think all beginners are required tho start out with a common native broad winged hawk, like a red tailed hawk.
We have peregrines nesting on the county building in the town where I live. I love watching them chase the pigeons around downtown. Funny thing is, they seldom kill and eat the pigeons- they prefer woodcock and other tastier birds, even though they have to fly further to get them.

@Rod, Yes...it was...but the overall pattern of coloring on the feathers was more marbled looking. There was more brown and white throughout the feathers. It looked exactly like that bird though. The head and beak were exactly that shape and I would say that it was about 12-14 inches tall. I was in awe when I saw it. Part of the reason I didn't get a picture was because I was sitting at my window with my mouth hanging open for a good five minutes before I ran to get my camera. Then I had to try to sneak up and get a pic without scaring it off...which didn't work of course. I saw two more just like it around my neighborhood and then one more at the baseball field. Prior to this year, I have never seen birds like this in this area before. There have also been a bunch of huge black crows that have made a nest high in a tree over my house this year. Interestingly, I have not seen the big birds or the crows since March. I have found some skulls in my yard though that I think may be crow skulls.

I you are sure that your bird looks like the one in the Pic. Then it will be a Redtail but they are quite big. So it could be one of the smaller Buteos. I can't be sure unless I see a pic. ;)

Yep...from my window it looked like it was at least a foot tall...maybe a foot and a half. It was big. If I see any around again, I will try to get a pic...but, like I said...I haven't seen any in a while now. It came around and kept perching outside my front door for a few days...this was maybe in January or February? Then I didn't see it again. I saw a couple down near my neighbors house around the same time and one at the baseball field in March. I haven't seen any since.

The chorus frog larvae I'm keeping are doing great. Growing really fast and I only occasionally find one or two dead. The rest are thriving.
I also found some salamander (or newt?) larvae in the same place I got the frog eggs. In standing water, nothing more than a dang puddle, right in the backyard. There's even perrywinkles and aquatic snails there. If we would just get more than one sunny, dry day, the puddles would be gone. I think the captives I have are going to be the only survivors.
I'm having a problem with the salamander larvae though. Almost every day, I find a few with bubbles trapped inside them, floating upside down. Within a day or two, they're dead. Not sure what's causing it.
Took a weed whacker to some tall grass the other day. Got hit in the face by frog guts. Oops. Had to relocate about a dozen frogs that didn't get hit. One was a huge (for a chorus frog) fat female. She must have been around 3 inches long. Really big for her species.
It's only been in the 50's and still quite gray and dreary. A few sunbreaks yesterday brought out some northwestern garters, some of which were mating, but it just isn't warm or nice enough for pugets just yet. Like concinnus', it takes a bit nicer weather to bring them out. There's a pond within walking distance and I'm told there are some monster pugets there. Patiently waiting for sun and 70's.

It's not really luck. Just par for the course in western WA. Sometimes it doesn't even reach 80 degrees until July. Last year saw 300 rainy days where I am. I just go from one extreme to the other (Mojave desert to Puget Sound) Victorville, CA (where I actually live now) gets around 5.5 inches of rain a year, Seattle area, about 45 inches. I'm just up here in WA for a few months but it just happens to be during the wettest part of the year and during the wettest March on record. Things are looking up this weekend. Plenty of sun and around 70 degrees.

I just thought Panzer's vent seemed close to the shell in that upside down photo.
I thought Tank was female at first. He needed to mature more before his vent moved further down the tail.
Big front paws are another sign of a male.

just got this guy a little while ago. he's a 2mo Paroedura picta (pictus, panther, ocelot, Madagascar ground gecko). named him Ripper because he tears around his cage at night and has a pretty explosive strike (not quite as impressive as my little red-sided's was, but not bad for a 3" critter). very inquisitive and adventurous little lizards if given the space. they come from dry woodlands, so very fun to set up with thick pieces of bark and stones.
this was about a month ago, he's filled out a bit in the hips and tail since then. you can't really tell in this picture, but his eyes are a deep blue with a rim of dark yellow around the pupil.

Nope! I'll tell you guys later tonight, want to see if anybody else wants to get some guesses in. :)
My guinea pigs seem to think they are birds. They don't make guinea pig noises...they make bird noises. They whistle and tweet and coo...it's very strange. I wonder if it has something to do with them being in a store with a lot of birds...I have bird pigs.
Haven't heard about these two in a while.. but, i'm also bad at trying to keep up here. How's Drucilla and Spike been? Did you ever figure out what sex they are? I have a terrible memory and don't remember if you got it figured out. Sorry!!
They may be doing a mating call. Might be time to give them the talk about the birds and the bees! ;)

I never took them to get them sexed by the vet...but from many pics I looked at on some guinea pigs sites...I'm thinking they are both female. They do the tweeting and whistling when someone walks in the room...it's their way of saying.."Give us veggies!" They are doing great though...thanks for asking, Mike!

It's okay... One of my medical taxi drivers got very offended when I told him I owned snakes. I see everyone as the same, so sometimes I forget their culture is a lot different... And being from the middle east, only living in the us for 4 months... Hah... I felt kind of bad afterwards, it really freaked him out, because when he thought of snake, he thought cobra...

I have heard that about green snakes...I have a friend who has some and he says that they are very nervous...and hard to keep alive in captivity because of that. He doesn't handle his. They are so beautiful though...and their heads and faces remind me of garters. Are pueblan milksnakes friendly? I have seen some around here in my local pet store before...but have no idea about their disposition.

My brother kept a pueblan that was hyper and nervous, but beautiful. She partially tamed to the point that she wouldn't bite or musk us (still a risk with other people), but it was like night and day comparing her to his lazy sand boa or my radix. Among the milk snakes, I think pueblans are kind of notorious for being spastic.

Cool fish! I have some fish myself, but I'm putting my fish collection on hold for a while. Once all of the ones I have are gone I think I'm going to take a break from fish.
The Green Snake is very nervous. The only time I take him out is when I clean his enclosure. I've had two others along with him and they both died within a few months. Every time I put my hand near him he rears back and gapes his mouth at me. When my Milksnake was younger he was pretty flighty and would musk every time he was out, which seems to be the case with all Pueblans. He's calmed down a lot though. He's pretty good when being handled, but if he's out for too long he'll reach a point where he's done and just wants to get out of my hands.

If you like milksnakes and want a more tame and relaxed one then a Honduran milk is probably best from what I've heard. I had a tangerine honduran not so long ago and it was a great little beast. A good size female too. She did tend to get a little funny at meal times though.

Among the milk snakes, I think pueblans are kind of notorious for being spastic. That sounds a lot like my female eastern, Cee Cee. She has calmed to the point in which she trusts me...but she will musk the crap out of anyone else who tries to touch her...and possibly bite them as well. Love the pic of your turtle's butt Mike (he is such a cute little "thing" :D), and the gecko, Nate...the fish and the tarantula...even though I really don't like spiders very much...but for some reason, I don't mind tarantulas.

Eeeelllchhhh....I can't stand spiders. I am afraid of them and they make my skin crawl. I have an unfinished basement and it's like some kind of scene from Arachnophobia down there. My washer and dryer are down there so I have to go down there to do the laundry. I found a huge dead wolf spider down there the other day. If that thing had been alive and gotten near me, paramedics may have been needed. The good thing is that I occasionally find garters in my basement. I really wish garters ate spiders.

Orb weavers freak me out still. I go nuts if I walk through one of their webs, and throw a complete fit if it ends up on me. I have no idea what it is about them, but they really bother me. Still wouldn't kill one though. I can't kill much without feeling guilty about it. Unless its to feed another animal of course.

Ha ha. We have those all over outside of my house in the summer. I have a bunch of pine trees surrounding me and it seems to attract them. We usually have at least three large webs outside the main entrances to my house at any given time in the summer. Funny...my son and I are both afraid of spiders, yet we always end up naming the orb weavers and taking a bunch of pics of them. They kind of fascinate me. Not that I would want one crawling on me...and I certainly watch closely that I don't go anywhere near the webs. I will try to get a pic of one this summer...they get pretty huge...we had one last summer the size of a silver dollar!

Roaches are one of the very few things that I don't like. It may be because my mom always hated them, or maybe because growing up in my old neighborhood they were everywhere. Either way I would rather not have them around me lol.

Tank tipped the scale at 13.53 lbs today. He's a growing machine.
His attitude remains constant, which is awesome.
He is the most curious and interactive turtle I have ever worked with.

The racer is currently on pinkies. The roaches started as feeders, but after keeping them for a while I became interested in them as more than just a food source. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes. Some climb, some don't.

I saw a video of a hissing cockroach giving birth recently. It was fascinating.

Well here are the other pets that I hadn't posted pics of before.
This is Dixie, our Sheltie. She's very lazy and likes to lay around and be petted. No playing games for her.

This is Cooper. He's just under a year and a half and is huge. He has a great personality and all he wants to do is play and be around people.

And this is our parakeet, we call him "bird". Great personality and loves to be out of the cage when people are in the room.

The only other pets that aren't pictured are the rabbits and the fish. I don't really have too many pictures of them.
