Thanks.
He doesn't like me sitting on the couch. He wants me down on the floor right next to his enclosure.
If I'm sitting on the couch he stares at me with his neck stretched all the way out of his enclosure.
Once I get down there he goes about his business.
I usually don't get to sit on the couch much.

Shouldn't house them together as they will bite each others tails.
You'll end up with 3 stubby tailed turtles.

OH yes, aquatic turtles are not for the faint of heart. I knew how high maintenance they are when I got my first RES, and I'm still finding it just incredibly daunting some days. WOW. Definitely a change from tortoises and snakes. :P
So what about ground turtles? I could go catch a box turtle right now!
Not that I would. I coulnt keep a turtle now anyway.
I'm pretty sure that's extremely illegal in most states... ;)
Box turtles are some of the more high maintenance of the more "common" land-dwelling species. If you ever do decide to get a turtle/tortoise, look into the Russian tortoises and similar species. They still need big space (you're looking minimum 4 feet for an adult male--larger for females) for their small size, but they're sooo much lower maintenance than the turtles. But I'm in love with Russians, so I may be a little biased... lol. If you just plain like Boxies better, they aren't too bad. Still high-maintenance, but not nearly as bad as an aquatic turtle!
Which reminds me. I still don't have a garter snake (but the expo is coming up, and I'm making a bee-line for Don's table... Fingers crossed he has some concinnus available!!!), so they aren't really the "other" pets, lol, but here's some pics of my shelled pets since we're on the subject... These were taken earlier this afternoon.
Here's my little Leopard tortoise rescue. He has a broken beak, and hasn't been eating terribly well, so I was super thrilled to notice new growth lines when going over the pics from today. WOOHOO! He's gained 14 grams since I got him in July, weighing in at 57 grams this evening. By no means a lot, but pretty good if the previous owner was at all serious about him being 2 years old! :P

(Back in July, for comparison...)
http://i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k596/CrazyReptileLady/Chelonians%202011/P7010037-1.jpg
And the RES. He bugs me big time. These guys are supposed to be stupidly hardy, but this one refuses to thrive. I don't know what the deal is. If I'm doing something wrong, or if he was just cared for really poorly at some point and it's starting to catch up... I wish I could just dump him in the pond and let him have-at, but I kind of need to put a turtle-proof barrier up first so he can't escape... :P Oh, right, pics--nearly forgot the whole point.

Nice to see you on the forum. Hope you get that garter soon. Don has some very nice snakes.

You make it seem quite difficult. I think I'll hold off on the turtles....:p

09-28-2011, 09:08 AM
Steve - I hope so too! I've been wanting a garter for a long time now... I even have a little cup of nightcrawlers in my fridge waiting, lol! I'll be so bummed if Don is short on the ones I've been wanting. I just found out yesterday that Tortoise Supply, a great breeder out of Vegas, is skipping the show up here this year... So sad, I was dying to get my hands on one of his Russians! :( (I kind of have a running list for the expo... That's what happens when they only come once a year--it's like Christmas... LOL)
He may be female, I'm really not sure. He's only about 4" right now, so a bit small to tell just yet. If he doesn't die from whatever the heck is going on, I definitely have my fingers crossed for male. Those female RES can get humongous! :P
RedSidedSPR - From what I've been told very often, once you have them set up, they aren't too bad. Especially RES... They're almost bullet-proof. I pet-sat an 8" female for a couple months earlier this summer who was being kept in a 20 gallon tank with 2 map turtles and a filter that had stopped working a long, long time ago, yet was the picture of health (good news is, I talked the owner into upgrading them to a 75.. Still too small for the 3 of them, but a million times better than a 20 gallon!!). I can't help but think there's something wrong with mine, or something seriously wrong with my care regiment that I just haven't been able to hash out, because for a RES to fail to thrive is almost unheard of. If you like turtles, don't be too discouraged... They're fantastic animals to own, and definitely worth the effort; you just have to prepare yourself for what you're getting into. :)

She was almost 16 years old and according to her Vet. on borrowed time for the last few years of her life.
The other day my Gabby wanted to take some pictures out in the backyard.

Everyone on here loves their snakes, but there's really nothing that can compare to the bond between a human and a dog.. I actually teared up a bit looking at that picture. Wow, what a big boy. Oh, and Tank is pretty big too.:p
I'd like to take this moment to illustrate what deworming can do for your reptiles. Remember Tank was carrying a heavy load at one time but he's really packing on the growth/weight since he got dewormed. Sure, a reptile can live a long life carrying worms but when they're gone, they can live a much healthier life and get very big.

Hi Kimberley yes we have three tortoises one redfoot one yellowfoot and a leopard and you are right they are long lived, they all have a distinctive personality and are not difficult to look after, and there is a flip side to that life long commitment you are worried about, unlike mammals like dogs cats rabbits etc, you don't have a broken heart every dozen years or so when faced with their loss,
this is not an argument against keeping dogs and cats, just the upside of a lifelong commitment :)

Does anybody have experience with tortoises? I would love to have a Russian tortoise but read that in captivity they live around 50 years. Don't think I'm ready for a 50 year commitment.
Tortoises are wonderful. I have 4 Russians (trying to build up a breeding group--easier said than done I'm finding!) and a little Leopard tort right now. They're definitely a joy to have.
They do live very long lives, and the life-long commitment certainly is daunting to think about. One thing to consider, since you're looking at Russians, is most adults in captivity are wild-caught, and already a good 10-15 years old. If you start with an adult, it cuts back a bit on the length of your commitment... Though you may still want to include provisions for the tort(s) in your will... lol
Tortoises are great pets, so long as you make sure to do your research--just like any other exotic pet. They do like a great deal of space... For example, my little 2.5" Leopard is in a 36x18" enclosure and, while that may sound large for such a tiny baby, he uses the whole thing. Russians, specifically, are a tough, easy to care for species, and a great choice for your first tortoise. You can find a good caresheet over at The Russian Tortoise (http://russiantortoise.org) and great advice on care, etc over at Tortoise Forum - An Online Community of Tortoise Experts - Tortoise Care, Tortoise Photos, Reptile Classifieds (http://tortoiseforum.org).

I have a deal with my fiance that if he goes along with my snake-breeding plans, he eventually gets a leopard tortoise. Still not sure how that's a 'deal' since it's sort of like saying I can have a free car only if I also take a free boat...
One of the most attractive things to me is their long lives. Just wondering, how much does it cost to feed one? I was talking to a lady with a GIANT spurred tortoise at the convention I went to awhile back, and the diet she described sounded like it'd be pretty expensive, especially during winter.

11-04-2011, 12:19 AM
Russians are great, they're very hardy, active and personable. I have a 1.2 group and they're a joy to keep. What's nice is they're a smaller species and torts in general need much more floor space than folks realize. They might not be sprinters but they sure love to roam and will use all the space you can give them. Needless to say with smaller species you're giving them more room to explore within the same space.
The Russians are pretty inexpensive to feed, and if you make an outdoor area for the warmer months (or year round for some places) they can get some good quality grazing in. You want to feed them grasses, weeds & leafy greens. Full grown you'd be lucky if they ate as much in a month as a Sulcata does in a couple of days.
Like anything, research research research.

I just had to give a Tank update. He is such a good turtle.
Two days ago Tank had roast for dinner. He slept the next 32 hours.
I woke him up this morning since he was due to poop.
He gladly woke up and went into his water. A few moments later he had a movement.
He then came out and went back to bed. This evening he woke up and stuck his head out from under his blanket.
This was unusual. I figured he sleep another 24 hours at least.
After a few moments be made a beeline to his water. Seconds after entering the water he pooped again.
Told you he was a smart turtle. I made a quick change of the water and he relaxed for a few moment, then it was out and back to bed.
I just love this turtle.
He may have to get some surgery done on his nose as his nostrils are still very small. This gives him trouble breathing through his nose.
My Vet. says it won't be a big thing but will require anesthesia. I'll keep every posted on when this proceedure is going to be done.

Both my Axolotls are yea very hand tame, this morning when I was slowly lowing the food dish(Makes it SO much easier to clean if the bloodworms STAY in the dish) The darker bigger one was trying to get in between my fingers lol it was cute. I think they are learning my morning routine :) Their so active n just plain freaking awesome! <3 Mexican Walking Fish <3 Garter snake baby. Kinda think I almost like my reptilian / amphibian children better then my furry ones... they may beg for food as well, but they don't climb in your bowl n dump your food everywhere ... like Ms. PIGGY this morning, gave herself a cereal n milk bath... as well as my floor n my foot... freakin kitten.... lol
Tank sounds awesome n smart indeed :) lol Fix for his nostrils ....

Antihistamine tablets on their own don't help, but throw in a nasal spray as well and the combination works much better. I'm allergic to cats, but Mort was Char's baby and the two of them came as a package. I had to tweak my allergy medication for the cat, sometimes I think I should just bite the bullet, incur the wife's wrath, and shave the cat. :)

ConcinusMan
11-24-2011, 06:33 PM
If you are using a URL you have uncheck the box that says "Retrieve remote file and reference locally". if you don't uncheck it, it will show as a thumbnail instead of full size. That's what "Retrieve remote file and reference locally" means. It means the link to the actual full size picture is referenced/represented locally (this forum) as a thumbnail size image. This applies when you are showing pictures that are somewhere else, such as another website or picture hosting site.
Whenever you use the other option and attach a picture to your post, it always will and always has shown up as a thumbnail. If you want it to show up full size, click the thumbnail. Right click the full size image, copy the URL, then paste that using the URL option. That's what I did here:

Cohan, our Siamese Fighting Fish. He hand feeds. And comes to the front of the tank whenever you stop to check the fish, not only does he come to the front he does it and then flits back and forth to make sure he's the centre of your attention and aren't looking at the other fish.
Another example of an animal that isn't supposed to have a personality, having a real personality.

Try what I discovered a few days ago - Cohan takes dried blood worms from our fingers. Interesting feeling when he misses the blood worm and has a nibble at my finger instead. It would be difficult to overfeed if we just hand fed the fish. Fortunately with the tetras and corys in there as well not much goes uneaten, still got to be careful not to overfeed them as the tetras will probably eat themselves to death. I doubled up the filters which helps keep my water clear.
katach
11-27-2011, 03:57 PM
I need to get a small filtered tank for him. Right now he's just in a glass bowl. Kaylee is only here every other weekend so no worries on overfeeding. When I feed him I only drop one food pellet in at a time and wait for him to eat it before giving another. It doesn't help the bowl that he keeps trying to make a mating bubble nest either.

They survive in a glass bowl, but ideally need something like a 40 litre tank. A, small filtered tank will cut down the number of times you need to change the water, what are you on at the moment? 50% a week or more frequently than that? In a small filtered tank you may have capacity for a few other fish as well as the betta.
The thing that annoys me about bettas is that shops sell them saying that they can be kept in ridiculously small bowls, I've heard of them being sold to be kept in bowls the size of a pint glass. They'll survive for a while but you wouldn't expect them to thrive. A bit like keeping a garter in a tiny viv.

11-27-2011, 04:42 PM
Chris was asking you how often you do water changes, and what percentage you change. In an unfiltered tank, you have to replace some of the water with fresh, to remove the gunk that fish create! Just adding water when it gets low isn't enough.
I have a female betta at work. Her body is a light reddish tan, with darker red fins. She's in a 2.5 gallon tank with a sponge filter in the corner. No heater needed, as her tank sits on the desk above my two cpus! It stays right around 80F! I named her once, but I've long forgotten her name...
chris-uk
11-27-2011, 04:47 PM
What do you mean?
Just wondered how often you have to change the water in a bowl to remove the ammonia, nitrates and nitrites (or actually you're not likely to have much of a biofilter in a bowl, so the toxins will be mostly ammonia). I do a 9l change in my 60l tank each week to keep the nitrate level down. Which reminds me, I need to test my water.

Spiders are something we could never have in the house, Char's petrified of them, that photo would be bad enough for her. Tonight we put up the Christmas tree.
Tank spent the time wondering the living room.
I'm learning he doesn't like change.
He is getting to be such a big boy.

If he's anything like a garter snake, he might be a bit disturbed at first, then curious about the change and want to investigate. All signs of an intelligent reptile.

Our tree will go up on Sunday, the cat will behave like Tank did. Especially as we have to move furniture to make room for the trees in our tiny living room. Mort doesn't like change, he's bad enough if the cushions on the sofa get swapped around, he's getting to be a grumpy old man who is set in his ways.
Just when he's got used to the tree, we will take it down. :-)

Oh no...It just occurred to me that my chihuahua puppy gets into everything and that he is going to be a mess with the Christmas tree...I usually have to chase the cats out from under the tree several times a day...they love to sit under the tree and bat at the decorations with their paws...but the puppy is going to try to eat every decoration and probably the tree too!

I didn't put up the tree last year, because we had just adopted our rescue poodle. My boys have already been asking about the tree for THIS year. We still have Eli the brat, but we also got a cat this year! Maybe I can put it by the hall way and tie it to the decorative column...

They have a couple of ribbons that I feel sorry for because they probably are not caring for them properly...they don't know anything about garters over there....they told me to give my garter crickets before I found this forum. I keep going and looking at the ribbons to see if they are okay...but I don't really want ribbons. I just wish someone who knew something about them would come and buy the poor things.

EasternGirl

I have never seen one around here...I was actually quite surprised to see the ribbons. If I saw a garter in a pet store around here I would probably have to snag it up quickly for fear that they would not care for it properly.

We found many hermit crabs this summer in Cape Cod. I was constantly breaking up "crab fights". We put them in a bucket and then let them go at the end of the evening. However, I was breaking up crab fights with ones I found on the ocean floor. Like that isn't big enough???!!!

Late this afternoon I drew a warm bath for Tank. He woke up from his slumber and headed to his water.
After taking care of his turtle business he returned to bed.
A few hours later I partially uncovered him and found him in a classic, relaxed turtle position.
I sometimes wonder if Tank is comfortable in his life with my family. I think that question has been answered.
So comfortable, even with 5 kids and 2 dogs running around.

I don't think so. They're 100% terrestrial. And by the way, if you have too many of them that are the same size, the fighting is over available shells. Get 3-5 shells of appropriate size, per crab, (and perhaps a larger enclosure) and the fighting should greatly decrease.

Life span not only depends on good husbandry, but also species. Some species live months to just a few years, others up to 25 years.

Thanks...on a different note...I bought shelves for the snake tanks tonight. I couldn't find any of the plastic plano ones that were high enough to put a tank and have room for the lights on top...but I found a set of metal ones that can hold up to 250 lbs and you can adjust the height on each shelf. Now I just have to put them together....and decide where I'm going to put them.

Yeah, my hognose ate last night! That stubborn little beastie hasn't eaten since Oct 14th. I offer every week, but many weeks, the only mouse eating was done by the cat! Last night I thawed out the last large pinky and put him in his deli cup with it. When he hadn't eaten by bedtime, I put the whole container in his viv. He'd be secure and warm, and hopefully more tempted to eat. He had a very big bulge this morning, and his momma was very relieved...

This is my new kitten Diogenes. She has a pretty cool story behind her, but if you don't want to read it, then just ogle the amazing cuteness! (This is the night I brought her home).
3478
She was part of a feral cat colony living in the parking lot beside my apartment and we bonded :) She was like 5 months old when I finally took her home, so she didn't grow up around people at all. I've owned feral cats and kittens that grew up as part of an abandoned litter, but she's the first one that grew up in an actual colony of several families and unrelated cats. It's crazy how this affects the way she fits in with our other cats! Normally, there is about a month of hissing and territory fighting when we bring in a new one, but after about three hours, she was piled up with them and they were grooming each other!
She's also calm and well-adjusted in the way that I've only ever seen in my other cats that grew up wild. In the month it took me to gain her trust enough to catch her, I got to see how this cat colony actually functioned, and it was seriously one of the neatest experiences I've ever had. I had no clue how complicated feline society could be, and I've owned cats all my life! (It's amazing that I've been able to be this articulate, as normally all I can say when I'm trying to talk about her is "Awwwwww, it's the BABY!" or something equally sicky-sweet).

Congrats on your new kitty. We have a rescue group around here dedicated to saving cats left abandoned in apartment parking lots called "dumpster cats"...because I live on a college campus and so many college kids move and abandon their cats in apartment parking lots...it's unreal. My cat, Beanie, came to live with me many years ago after she was abandoned in the apartment that I moved into...she was left outside and every time I would open my door she would run into my apartment! She could have ended up a dumpster cat but I took her in. She does not actually get along with my other cats very well...in fact, she has trust issues in general...she only really trusts me. She and I have an incredible bond...she knows that I rescued her.3479 The Beanie...
