Here is question about ringneck snakes. My friend found a baby at the school where she was working. She thought I might like it so she gave it too me! (Oh nooooo! Not a baby!!!!! :rolleyes:) I thought my baby garter was small! This baby is TINY!!!! I would like to release it behind my house after the hurricane because I really don't want to keep it but have read that they eat other snakes! I know that they don't get very large but don't they get big enough to eat baby garters? :confused:

I've caught a loooot of ringnecks, adults don't get much bigger than my baby garters.

They do eat snakes, but it's possible to get them to eat worms. Either tiny eathworms, or (UH OH) cut up nightcrawlers.

if he doesn't eat them, just release him. They are a hard snake to keep.

I found mine under a board, under our storage building. They're pretty common, and you can find them just about anywhere where it's cool, wet, and dark. They eat any sort of vegetable matter; mine really loves apples, and also dried oak leaves, which he goes through like crazy. I keep him on moist coco-fiber with leaf-litter to hide in and a shallow water dish, and mist him once daily to make sure he doesn't dry out. I also keep the cage covered with a towel during the day since they like it dark.

Sandy was an opportunistic end-of-the-day purchase at the Hamburg expo a couple of years back
being that she was the last the vendor had, and I ended up getting her for only $50, I've sometimes wondered what the others looked like
when I got her, she didn't have nearly this much colour either - just a bit of orange around the face and neck, and otherwise just sandy coloured

the girl is my daughter Mikhaila, and thanks - she looks nearly as good as a beardie, but she talks, and sings, and free ranges, and the maintenance costs are quite a bit higher

Cool and with out buying them from the store are they easy to catch and where can they be found? I had an iguana when I lived in Cali that was about 5.5 foot including the tail. It was funny cause I had a roomie at that time that I couldnt stand and obvisly(sorry, spelling?) my iguana knew that cause he would sit on my lamp when she was around and she didnt like him either. It was awesome cause everytime he was on my lap she never talked to me and I loved that...lol

Our resident old man, Chance, affectionately known as fuzz butt has been declining rapidly lately. I gave him a bath today and the deterioration in his body condition was a bit startling. I knew he was losing muscle tone in his rear. I didn't realize he was losing muscle tone everywhere. When we adopted him 13 and a half years ago he was skin and bones. I was shocked to see that he's in nearly the same condition now, despite quality food and care :( It's been a rough day here, to say the least. The vet didn't help matters with a $340 quote for euthanasia. I've got calls in to other places as that just seems ridiculous to me. I paid $150 3 years ago to help a great dane pass and even that seemed like a lot for the services provided. yeah, my day sucks... no real need to respond. Just needed to vent a bit. I'm waiting til this weekend to tell the kiddo who is away at college(he was in kindergarten when we got Chance) so there's really no where to vent right now and I'm pretty down. Everyone here loves their snakes, but nothing can quite compare with the bond between a person and a dog.
We had a 14 year old poodle pass this summer. It's tough, but when older animals start to decline, you have to remind yourself that they are dying of old age because you gave them a good life for a very long time.
I'll keep you and your dog in my thoughts. :(

Awww, thank you guys. He's been a great dog. Always up for anything the boys wanted to do. The kiddo on the beach is in his second year of college and the kiddo in the creek is a senior in high school. It seems like Chance has always been a part of their childhood.

Haha yeah there is almost no info out there on them. Lacroix Kukri Snake is the common name as Steve posted.

They're rear-fanged and have enlarged curved rear teeth that work like daggers (hence the Kukri name). They tend to eat mainly eggs in the wild (both bird and reptile) but also some small reptiles & rodents. They use their teeth to slice/break open the eggs and drink the contents. It's said that even very small ones will slice you open if you get bitten, they slash at you with the teeth instead of just clamping down like most other snakes. So they should be a lot of fun :)

Yesterday Tank was given a big lunch of chicken. Right after his last bite he shot out of his enclosure and wanted under his blanket.
This photo was taken 20 hours later. He's still crashed.
Tank had some chicken hanging from his beak. He allowed me to remove it and even opened his mouth so I could get it out. Amazing stuff from a wonderful turtle.
Tank is now 8.70 lbs and in the middle of another growth spurt.
I was hoping for 10 lbs by Christmas but that might be expecting too little from Tank.

He is and cuddles with the kids. Amazing turtle to say the least.
Reaching sexual maturity can sometimes make these male snappers more aggressive/defensive and less tolerant to handling but with Tank it seems that won't be the case.
He continues to interact with my family in nothing but a docile way.
Snapping turtles are most defensive/aggressive when out of water but Tank has shown none of these tendencies.
I do keep in mind what he is and monitor all interactions with a wary eye.

Usually year 2 or 3. Females a little later because of the size difference. Males grow bigger, faster in some areas.
Tank is from South Dakota and the males are big from that area.
I'm guessing Tank will max out around 50-70 lbs.
I can wait for that.

No, but I did have to follow him, since I refuse to yank on the leash, it's only there to prevent escape.

So I waded in behind him with my shoes and socks on...

He also stopped half way and "polluted" the water.

He's been visiting that creek for years, and this is the first time he ever got completely in the water.

I can't deal without pets at school, and since I can't sneak Trevor in with me this year I decided to go with some legal ones :D

These are Othello (blue-scale) and Snarfel (red/white), and they're both baby oranda goldfish. I'm trying to train them. They both respond to light cues from a specific lamp and Othello has learned how to do figure 8's after just one week!

I too love that idea. I never thought of that. You should put that idea in that thread that talks about different things to use for the snakes that people would normally think about using. I got some of the things frm that thread in my tank cause I hadnt thought of them.

Yes they are okay with room temp but you should provide them with a heat source like a dome light with a branch underneath it so they can bask if they chose to. Mine would pretty much just stick to the glass near the light. They are not very active! ;) (unless it's feeding time!)

By making it profitable for those that sell them? There's only one way to "rescue" animals from the market and that's by not buying them. If there's nobody buying, there's no motivation for trying to sell them.

I personally don't have a problem with Petsmart, at least my two local ones, they do a great job and heed my warnings/advice. The employees care.

PetCo however, disgusts me. Their motto makes me laugh.

I went the other day, there were anole eggs everywhere in the cage, the ball Pythons were severly underweight, the monitor (why is in there??) had mites crawling all over the place, the frogs humidity was like 36% with empty water bowls, the water dragon had mouth disease, and the corn snake had crickets crawling in the cage.

All in one store.

That's why I hate them. And the employees don't give a damn. Not to mention lie to the customers to make sure the pet is exactly what they're looming for. That baby savanah monitor "won't get much bigger".

Yeah, our local petsmart is pretty bad about lying to customers as well. I went in there the other day for fish stuff, and the leopard gecko was laying in the middle of the cage dying, and no one would listen when I was like "Heyy, you might want to remove the dying animal, there are little kids staring at it... and no matter how much you insist it is sleeping, you are very wrong".
They also lied to me when I bought my pacman frog; told me he didn't need additional moisture, recommended sphagnum moss and reptibark for a substrate (number one cause of impaction in pacmans) and sold him as an Ornata, even though he's actually a Cranwelli...

We've all been through the same kinds of things at pet stores Lora. We've had this discussion many times and it's like beating a dead horse.

Bottom line is, a pet store (especially Petco) is not a place to get advice on any exotic animal. It's only a place to get overcharged. Petco changed their policy long ago regarding exotics and cut way back on their stock, if not completely eliminating it at some locations. They rarely, if at all, keep reptiles in the store beyond 90 days and they don't keep it a secret as to why. And that is, they know the conditions and diet are not adequate for long term maintenance.

They know some losses will occur and their stuff and animals are priced accordingly.

Pacman frogs are actually not frogs at all. They're toads. They can survive for many months in dry conditions as long as there is a bowl of water available. They are tropical Jesse. They do like it warm. I would think that normal household room temp or a bit warmer is fine which is why they make good household terrarium animals.

I called animal control on our local Petsmart (more like pet stupid) They had a ball python in an enclosure so small it couldn't even move. The anilmal control detective got right back to me and went and checked it out. He told them to get a bigger enclosure and that he would be back to make sure they did it.

Wow, maybe I should do that! I mean, look at that list I made! All in one store! Was walking back from Best Buy yesterday and stopped in (had to kill 20 minutes) and the mouth diseases were worse, the eggs (after 2 weeks) were still everywhere, and the frogs were gone, obviously dead. The corn snake has obviously never eaten in his life, and isn't planning on eating those crickets. It's like every animal is sick/dying/dead in that store.:( It's disgusting.

To be fair, sometimes the crickets in the different snake enclosures are not there on purpose. Sometimes they get into the snake cages from some of the other cages, that are supposed to have them. But yes, while individual stores vary and some are great, for the most part, the chain pet stores are horrible for certain types of animals, at least. And there is even more variation in the mom and pop stores.

No. They're there on purpose. Another PetCo, a couple year ago I watched someone dump them in. I told them why that's bad, they looked at me like "wow this kid knows more than me", obviously believed me, knew I was right, but just didnt care, and pretty much said that.:p

Now, here's why I don't have a problem with petsmart. At least my local. They feed the right thing, they treat the animales better, AND THEY LISTEN I mentioned that feedig goldfish to the ribbon snake was bad, they switched to minnows and pinkies, the employees at this store seem to care more. It's an overall cleaner, healthier cages/store.

Hell, PetCo the same way with fish. Dirty water. Dead fish everywhere. I got an albino plecostimus from them a year ago, (last thing ive bought from them)he was sticking to the plastic container while he tried to empty him into the bag, banging the thing on the counter hard as he could! Then fish fell to the floor. He picked it up, dropped it in the bag, tied it up very poorly, and handed to me with a smile, saying "come again!"

That fish died that week.

Feeder fish at PetCo -- can't see throughout th water. Petsmarts is a ver healthy clean tank.

Petsmart is bad too, but this ones pretty decent, and they listen ad certain employees care... I'd shop there if it wasn't for the prices. I only buy occasional fish, and feeder fish, but the prices are all that deter me. But I never shop at PetCo, even when they had a 70% off sale on all 20-40 gallons!!! I got petsmart to pricematch.:cool:

I was in a petland and they have a little reptile system going on but with way oversized heat lamps. 3 corn snakes were on the top level and the temperature gauge read 110 degrees. All 3 corn snakes were against the glass trying to get cool so I wrote a letter to the head office. When I went there all the times after the temperatures were all good and the snakes were happily not against the glass. I just feel so sorry for those corn snakes since they will live their whole lives at that pet store trying to be sold for $180-$210 while you can go to a breeder in the city that will sell them for $45-$70

All you can do is make complaints to whatever authorities are available.
An animal with an illness that isn't being treated for said illness is abuse.
Whether or not it's a chargeable offense is a whole different story.
Keep a log of all the dates, times and names of people you talk with.

Also can depend on how knowledgeable the Animal Control rep or whoever else you might contact with jurisdiction is on exotic animal care. They probably know what to look for as abuse in a fair number of species but might not know how serious some of the non-ideal conditions are. But yes, I'd definitely report them and I would try to contact corporate as well. I doubt most of the people there care much but they don't like calls about their care (and the possible bad publicity) and if one person is persistent enough or they get enough calls from several people, occasionally I've heard of the conditions being improved from internal pressure, even if the local manager and employees are poops.

Wow, this thread exploded overnight! :p They're actually surprisingly high maintenance little animals... Also, they are actually frogs, not toads. They survive long periods of drought by going into estivation.

Their temps should never get below 75, and a daytime temp of around 85 is ideal. Trevor has two lamps, his daytime lamp, and his night-time red bulb for winter. Also you need a hygrometer in the cage and humidity needs to stay between 70 and 90, so they have to be misted several times a day and their tank needs to be modified to hold in humidity (duct tape and seran wrap work just fine).

They're neat little animals, but they are a ton of trouble to really keep healthy.

I noticed he had some left over food hanging out the corner of his mouth.
I started picking at it and to my surprise he opened his mouth and let me get it out.
He's an amazing turtle. I've never had another turtle like him.

He is a great turtle. My sis ter had a small box turtle when we lived in California and he would roam.....but he would also nip. One day my sister was sitting on the couch talking to mom and he nipped her toe. Her first reaction exspecailly not knowing it was him doing it was to kick. So Todd( the box turtle) had his first and only flying lesson. I dont think he liked it much cause he didnt do it again. He lived for 15years I think it was. Give or take a year. He was awesome. He dies of old age. All the kids that came over would wanna watch him. Man he was fast too. I think at one point my sister wanted tco race him but didnt.

I've always wondered if it's the plastic bins that make the frogs eat better or just that people have a hard time keeping their environment right in standard screen-top tanks..

Tank continues to grow and mature. My hopes where he would reach 10 lbs by Christmas but I think Tank has other ideas.
On 10/28/10 of last year Tank weighed 2.20 lbs
On the scales tonight Tank weighed 9.50 lbs. He's a growing monster.

I had a little green frog when I was 10, but my mom let it go because she didn't like the noise it made. It was so cute. I'm guessing it was about 1.5in long, bright green. My memory is a little fuzzy on it though.

If you've lived in WA all your life, it'd be a green chorus frog. They have the tendency to change colours. Mine are brown and grey because they live on soil, and I have some grass growing in there and some of it is a yellow grey colour.

@Hornets23 ya sure, they're great little guys and each is different, personality wise, its just the cute little buggers die so soon, you rely get attached to them. They're also really easy to take care of and will eat anything (meat) and I mean ANYTHING. If you look up mantis vs mouse on youtube you'll realize these guys are pretty strong. Even a vid about them attacking a little corn snake (it lives, it wriggles out).


Also, you do not want to get pinched by the adults, they can make you bleed, but they are usually well mannered.

Bleh... Cornsnakes are pretty boring. Though, if you ever want living jewelry, you can drape one over your neck; there's a good chance it wouldn't do anything for hours :D

Plus they're a little tricky to house together (from what I've heard), so you don't get the fun of watching them interact in groups like you do with garters!

Well, I started with 2 cornsnakes. Offcourse they are not found in the wild. I got them when they where 3 months old. But after having them a year they where kinda boring. You only have to feed a mouse once a week. After dinner they do a 'walk' around the tank and then they hide. After 4 days you sometimes saw one, and after 5/6 days the other. You found and cleaned a poop from both and that was all the job you had to do. Then i came to visit Johanna (also on this forum) and she had garters (radix only). I think around 15 adults, en 50 small babies ....... I watched my eyes out and they where active all evening. I started to learn more about them and figured I had to have garters .......

So I 'swithced' to garters. Now I have ... euh ... a lot :D

But I still do like the corns. I bought a third one same age with a stripe (pinstripe) wich I always wanted. After quarantine time they are all 3 in a big tank. I have no problems keeping them together ... just as you keep the sex the same (I have female only). (And I did find a very nice looking lady in Hamm. She's still very young. I couldn't leave here there so I took here also. When she get's bigger she turns pink *lol*).

But I must agree .. garters are more fun, more active, need more work, have more variaty in food .. all in all I love those Garters ......

Frogger has been rejecting food lately. Does anyone know how I might be able to get her to eat? She used to eat lots of pinheads, and never liked the night crawlers (which Biglegs and Shadow loved) but I've offered pinheads and baby night crawlers and fresh caught earth worms, she won't take anything. She grabs it and lets go :( She's looking pretty sunken in so I'm starting to worry a little bit.

That sucks... Sometimes frogs will go off food until they almost starve. Double check all their enclosure settings like temp and humidity and all. If the environment changes even a little, Trevor will refuse to eat for like a week.
Also, can you try superworms or meal worms? They aren't healthy as a long-term food because the exoskeletons are harder than crickets' but sometimes they'll get frogs started eating again. Or if your local pet store sells dubia roaches, dubia nymphs might work as well (but they aren't worth ordering online if you only have a couple frogs).

If she doesn't start eating again, try isolating her. If the other frogs are somehow stressing her out, she might start eating again alone and if she's sick it'll keep your others safe. Hope she starts eating again :(

spotted a massive toad, probably between a 4-5 inch body. I caught a moth and tickled it infront of its mouth. It lunged at the moth and bit part of my finger. Totally freaked me out and made me laugh for a few minutes. At least the toad got a good meal

I forgot how tiny they were! Mine ate full-sized crickets from the time he was half-dollar sized, so I've never even had to think about that. Hopefully she's just gone off food for awhile and will start up again soon.

This is our leopard gecko, Sephira. My hognose, Sweets. Nice profile of his shovel nose! Last is Octa, our Antilles Pink Toe tarantula. She molted during a road trip and lost three legs. She grew them all back the next molt. She's still smaller than a quarter. BTW, she lives in a Hot Wheels car display box!

do you have any pics of the spiders you had. Also I havent had to rip anything apartt like that yet. I had to move a lot of stuff before finding Pheobe still inside her encloser under her hide .It was weird ....lol

It might not be the best meal ever, but I got Frogger to eat a cricket leg. I was holding a cricket by its jumping legs an it kept fighting until it's leg popped off, so I just figured it's better than nothing, and put it in Frogger's face. She didn't seem to like it much, but I don't have anymore crickets of her size. Do you think a frog would eat a cricket that is cut in half?

I'll traumatize myself if I have to cut a cricket in half and have the frogs reject it... Haha. Biglegs might eat it, though... It seems she eats anything... Including fingers that are double the size of her own body.

I want a hognose. I almost bought one at a show, i just don't have the room. But when I think about, I don't really want any non-garters.

My male is 12" long, and he's 18-20 months old. I've been told he's small for his age, but his growth has been steady. I don't like to overfeed, and I don't want a huge snake. :rolleyes: Males mature at 15-20" long, so about the same length as some garters, but he will be a heavier bodied snake. He's twined through my fingers (makes it hard to type one handed.) I often handle him when I'm online!

Females are much bigger, closer to 3' long...

And a funny story, hognose snakes were a recommendation from my ex-husband's new wife! She's the one I was talking about garter snakes with last week too! He won't have "snakes or rats" in his house, so she always visits with mine when she picks up the boys!

This pic is a few weeks old, just after his last shed. Wow! He's beautiful! Never had a hognose,always wanted one! His neck is amazing! I've never seen such a burly male before!!!:)

After a short 20 hour nap Tank wakes up and gives me a few yawns.
He isn't a ball of fire when he gets up.
Usually takes him abot 15 minutes to make a move toward his water.
