males at 15 inches can breed, females should be 18 inches or more

i would have thought about 20inches for the female lol. the bigger the better as it can be quite difficult on the female if she is only small.

I would never breed a garter snake until it was 2 years old or more.

Reed, judging by your numerous threads on this topic, obviously you're keen to breed your snakes (snake?) but please be patient and allow them to grow up first....or go and buy some adult snakes.

What's the rush, Reed? Do you think you can earn some money? I have (as many of us do) some sought after species...tetrataenia, concinnus, cyrtopsis etc. But I know I'm never going to make any profit from them, even though they are expensive to buy, they are more expensive to raise. It can never be a way of making a fast buck. Maybe I've got you wrong, if so I apologise, but why the rush to breed from undersized snakes?

Sorry, but i am behind james 100% on this one! You're far too eager to make money off them without paying attention the the snakes themselves! They should be where your attention is and not the $ sign!

if you have 2 males, 1 15inch and 1 18inch then personally i would keep the 18inch because its easier to handle but i suggest if you get a female the same size and just leave them to it. dont encorege it by hubernating them. the chances of a big healthy litter with a female of 18inches are alot slimmer tham with a female of 25inches. it is better to leave them as long as poss before mating. i have 1.1 marcys in the same tank. i would perfere if they dont mate next year but i am not going to seperate them or encorage them atall. i am just leaving them to it.

males can generally breed after a year and over 12 inches...size doesn't affect the males in breeding as much as it does on females...if they are too small or young, it can cause health problems and possibly shorten their life span...females should be over 2 years and 18 inches long, preferably longer. I usually don't breed the females until they are 3 years old.

also, there is no way to tell a snakes age unless you have raised it form birth....size varies according to diet and how much they eat...
they would be fine together, however should be separated at feeding time to avoid possibly having the big one eating the smaller one.

cannibalism isn't common, garters can be a bit social also, have found several under a rock or board together.

So if you saying that a 15" snake is about a year or so old a 22" would be about 2???

hey,
at 15 inches,it's pretty safe to say your guy is barely one year old.slim chance he might be ready by spring '08,spring '09 is looking better.as far as the female goes, she might be ready at 20 inches, and in the wild, thats one thing, but since you control their lives,I wouldn't let her breed, until she's 24 inches, carrying the little ones and birth is very stressful, plus the health of the little ones.
