Reed, I think (!) it is parietalis. But what you really need to know is where the snake is coming from to determine what subspecies it is.Please take a look at my site and go to the Thamnophis sirtalis-page.Than click on this button...http://www.kousebandslangen.nl/fotoos1.jpgThan look at the pics of both subspecies and try to compare them with yours.

well......kinda leaning towards parietalis...only sure way totell is to know where the snake came from....fitchi are from utah, idaho, washington, oregon, and california.... parietalis are from the central U.S. up into canada. If you got it from a pet store you might be out of luck finding out where it came from.

ya but i doubt that the pet store would sell my a snake thats illegal to sell in california (where i live) o and any1 know what thamnophis's website is called?

thats thamnophis' website.... lots of pet stores don't know any better....have dealt with that here. check with them and see if they know where the snake came from...lots of places can sell if they are brought in from out of state...for instance rubber boas are native here...one of the local stores was selling them, but had paperwork showing they were captive bred out of state....best thing to do is find out where they came from. those 2 look like either species...northern red siders are real dark with a row of red spots...check out website photos of the garter snake dens, lots of them have jsut a row of red spots, and some even have very little to no red. valley garters have bright red, varying from red spots to red spots and speckling above the spots..... I don't think we will be able to tell for sure without knowing where they came from....also, scale row counts might help, count the scale rows near the head and at midbody...there could be some variation within the subspecies..would have to look it up to see.....

I don't know of anyone with any adult females available. the males in the pics are large enough for breeding.... check with scott felzer....see if he might have one...he usually clears out some adults to make room for holdbacks.

Reed,
they have adult red sideds at the east bay vivarium (some stub tailed checkered garters too) that would be your best bet finding a female and avoiding shipping costs.
I didnt look at the pictures but they better be red sideds as per state law illegal to sell fitchi as they are native here regardless if they came from another state.

When I was going through this debate with myself on some field finds, the fitchi have a red or dirty red spot on the cheek. This is missing in pariatalis and in your specimens.
