….is having babies as I type this. Can’t see what is going on, her head is sticking out about 5 inches from under her hide. Little wet babies keep crawling out. No idea how many yet, at least 20 so far. Going to try to beat KIKAT’s 41. There are some very nice looking little snakes here.:D:D

There were 42 plus 2 did not make it for a total of 44. They are a lot bigger than the other babies that I have. Moma eastern ate today, so will probably release her tomorrow. She is in pretty nice shape. Will let most of the babies go too. There are a couple that are really really nice. Some look like normal easterns, but a few have almost no stripe or markings. Looks like colorwise my snakes are all mixes genetically. Will try to post some photos of the unusual ones.:D

Well I just release "big eastern". I was playing with the babies and the top was off the viv. I turned around and she had climbed almost all of the way out and was looking at me, so I decided that it was time. Let her go at the end of the pool where I found her, she is a really nice snake. I will miss her.:( Down to 3 now Buddy, Green Girl and Gee Gee (for garter girl) not counting of course the 80 babies.:D

Good job letting her go, I'm sure the 80 babies will keep you busy enough!

How many of the babies will you keep, Terry?

stonyloam
08-21-2007, 03:00 PM
Ultimately I am not planning on keeping any. Some will be adopted into good homes, but the vast majority will be released. That is the one nice thing about having wild snakes, I can do the fun stuff all over again next year.
There is one however......:D:D

Yah it can be a bit of a challenge, but most will be released within a few days. I do have a new mystery though. I went down into the basement this evening and there was a baby garter scooting across the floor. I don't think it is one of mine (not that I counted them). That is the second free roaming baby that I have seen, so I suspect that I have a snake under the sunroom floor that has given birth. I may have to set up the "bait lamp" to see if I can lure anything up.:D

normals...het for melanistic. you gotta breed a male back to mom to get melanistics of breed a pair of the babies to each other after getting to breeding size.

I don't know of any maritime morphs, I think a maritime is actually closer to a morph of an eastern really.

Good news! I have found a home for all 40 of the Big Easterns kids. They are going to Ithaca College for a research study on nutrition and growth rates of baby eastern garters. After the study is completed they will be returned to the wild. Pretty good deal, and they should have a better chance of survival with a little size to them. Taking them down Monday and hope to get a tour of the Natural Sciences facility. The young man that is doing the study is a real "snake guy" (milk snakes though, but he still seams OK:D). Interesting the way things work out.

Yep that's right, Sept. 8th. That'd be cool to have an east, or at least, north east coast meeting! I usually hit all the Hamburg shows and if I remember, this should be a good one as well. I'll be hopefully unloading my thayeri babies there (as long as they're all eating by then).
