I haven’t posted here in a long time, but I thought I would try to get a photo of a Maritime Garter that has been in my woodpile this summer. Much to my surprise there were a pile of them (5-6) and they scooted before I could get a photo. Managed to grab one and got him to sit for a photo. Pardon the dirty hands.

Terry why would you label that "pallidulus"? That's an Eastern (T. s. sirtalis) not a Maritime.

LOL, we went through this YEARS ago as to their true identity. Are they Maritimes or just Easterns with a color variation? The general consensus at the time was that they were Maritimes maybe. Their range does include NY. Anyway they do look like the snakes identified as Maritimes, so I like to think they are.

Hey Steve, been a long time. I winter in Florida now, so they are gone by the time I get back, but there is usually a skin or two in the sunspace. I was pretty surprised to see such a group together, all looked almost identical. No garters at our place in FL, but we do have a Black Racer hanging around, beautiful and FAST!

LOL it’s unfortunate that you went thru it YEARS ago and still haven’t figured it out. A general consensus 4 years ago was that Hillary would win, but she got trumped into oblivion, so that’s how much a general consensus is worth. BTW this is what real Maritimes look like:

Those pictures are amazing!!! :eek: I didn’t know garters and milk snakes got along!! Is that something that happens a lot in the wild or were those just two unusually friendly snakes?

They don’t, it happened that they were about the same size, so the garter was safe. I usually move the milk snakes far away out of my yard when I find them.

I'm new here, so I'm sorry to butt in...forgive my ignorance but...what exactly are the visual differences between Eastern's and maritimes? I have been keeping Eastern's for about 20 years, but have never worked with maritimes. I actually have a few Eastern's that look quite similar to the ones pictured here though.15348
