..were all over my enclosure (under the paper, in the water bowl under the bark and under other snakes) this evening when I went down to check on my snakes and I don’t know where they came from. My big eastern appears to still be gravid so it must have been one of the others, but I don’t know which yet. They are tiny! They look like they may be from one of my maybe gravid maybe maritimes. Don’t even know for sure how many yet (at least a dozen), I’ll have to do a thorough search in the morning. Pretty slick! :D

Thanks everyone: There are 19, all appear to be prefect. They are from one of my maritimes that I was not sure was gravid, guess she was. Mom ate like a pig this morning, and is doing very well. It may be time to release her so she can get ready for winter. Hate to do it, but I can’t keep them all, besides my big eastern is still gravid, and my other maritime looks like it may have a surprise in store for me too.

They are eating (one is anyway)! I took my electric worm probe out and buzzed up a bunch of little tiny worms from the pile of sunflower hulls under the bird feeder, and dropped a few into the tank with the babies. They were pretty shy and scattered, but snuck up on the tank a few minutes later and saw a worm tail disappear into a tiny mouth. Pretty cool.:D

Lulu: Probably the next couple of days, I want to try to get a couple of good photos of her and make sure that she is well fed before I carry her the 20 feet back to where I found her, under the pool walkway. It is going to be a hard thing to do. :( With any luck I should see her again.:D

Uhhhmmmm...probably that happened to my garter, when I picked her up at my vet's clinic she was a lot more thin =(
But...I think it's better this way, im a beginner so too much snakes would be a little bit of trouble

Member a couple of months ago I posted a thread ("gravid?") asking if you guys thought one of my two garters was gravid? Some thought #1 was and others thought #2 was. Well guess what? They BOTH were. Found this (and a bunch more, don't know how many yet) in the enclosure this afternoon. I am now officially up to my ears in baby garters. and my BIG eastern is still gravid! Sorry about the dirty hands, been doing farming stuff.:D

Sure is, and there were 15 more just like him (37 total so far). Overwhelm uhhh.... maybe. Still have the big eastern to go, and my mostly green maritime is starting to look kinda fat, or maybe I'm just getting paranoid.:D

Well... The little green girl had 8 babies, one didn't make it :(. All look pretty nice. I fed the other two moms this morning and let them go :(. Hated to do it but It is for the best (down to "only" 47 snakes:eek:). They both appear to be in a lot better shape than when caught. The blemishes on their bellies have cleared up and they look really nice. Hope I see them again. Still waiting for the big girl to give birth. Should be lots of babies, I am hoping to beat KITKAT (41) :p. OH! One other thing when I opened the sunroom door this morning there was a baby garter curled up next to it and it scooted down the snake hole in the block. Pretty sure it is not one of mine, somebody must have given birth under the floor. I may have to set up the "bait" lamp again.:D

DISASTER!!!! I just managed to kill 5 of my babies. I feel like s%$##@@.:(:( I had put a temporary partition in my tank to separate the groups of babies and had held in place with tape. when I removed the partition I didn't notice tape stuck to the wall. Well 5 of the little guys managed to get stuck to the tape (I don't even know how they got up there) and there was no way to save them. I feel like such an idiot!:mad:

On a happier note: Here is a photo of the first two batches of babies, 31 left . I think a couple are going to require a little special care (I am assuming they are the “runts” of the litter), most look very good. They are starting to look for stuff to eat.

These are the babies from the little green snake. There are 8 and seem pretty healthy. A couple show some of the moms green color.

Last note, the little one I spotted in the sunroom this AM is almost certainly a wild one, so it looks like there will be plenty of snakes around here in the future.:D

Lulu: Don’t know, but it appeared to be very dark. I am thinking that it may be one from a large green garter that was hanging around my sunroom in April. I may try putting the heat lamp over the hole again to see if anything shows up (see "baiting snakes" thread that I started last March). I think that I was doing that stuff before you got here.

yeah that was before i got here but i will have a peek. i am guessing thats how you caught the green mum.

Sorry to hear about the tape accident. There as bad as kids, getting into everything. Not that it makes it any better, but honestly in the wild, very few of the babies would have actually made it.....they're rather low on the food chain. So the head start that you're giving the others will really help them out.

Terry, they look wonderfull.
What are you going to do. Release them immediately or release them next year or keep them all?
stonyloam
08-18-2007, 03:39 PM
Most will be released, some will go to a good home. I may keep one.;) One more passed today (it appears to be a suicide):(. The other 38 are doing well, some are eating like pigs, a couple are eating trout pieces (thank god, something that I don't have to catch). My big eastern appears ready to explode, she shed last night so anytime now. Green mom is also eating like a pig!! I have retained my sanity.... so far!:D

More info needed there. Terry! How does a Garter commit suicide?
It appears to be suicide by stupidity (natural selection). It apparently wedged itself under the corner of the bark hide and suffocated itself. I shouldn't make light of it but I just can't believe how much trouble they can get themselves into, they are driving me crazy, or at least edging me toward eccentricity. And while we are at it, why oh why do they ignore a piece if worm until one picks it up and then all the others say "that looks good gimme a bite", and the next thing you have is a wrestling match? KIDS!!!

That's just so true! They don't want it until a sibling takes it, then all hell breaks loose!

it doesn't matter what species it is, all babies and juvies want what the other has lol :)
